During your Boston vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Old Corner Bookstore Building
Built in 1718, this building is on a plot of land that was once home to the religious reformer Anne Hutchinson, who was excommunicated and expelled from Boston in 1638 for heresy. In the middle of the 19th century, the little brick building held the publishing house of Ticknor & Fields, which effectively made this the literary center of America. Publisher James Fields, known as "Jamie," counted among his friends Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, James Russell Lowell, Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Harriet Beecher Stowe. For many years this was the Globe Corner Bookstore (the bookstore is now in Harvard Square). Today the building houses the Boston Globe Store (tel. 617/367-4000), which sells souvenirs and newspaper-related merchandise. To continue on the Freedom Trail: Turn right and walk 1 block.
Old Granary Burying Ground
This cemetery, established in 1660, was once part of Boston Common. You'll see the graves of patriots Samuel Adams, Paul Revere, John Hancock, and James Otis; merchant Peter Faneuil (spelled "Funal"); and Benjamin Franklin's parents. Also buried here are the victims of the Boston Massacre (discussed below) and the wife of Isaac Vergoose, who is believed to be "Mother Goose" of nursery rhyme fame. Note that gravestone rubbing, however tempting, is illegal in Boston's historic cemeteries. To continue on the Freedom Trail: Turn left as you leave the cemetery and continue 1 1/2 blocks on Tremont Street.
Gibson House Museum
In the Back Bay, the Gibson House is an 1859 brownstone that embodies the word "Victorian." You'll see decorations of all kinds, including family photos and portraits, petrified-wood hat racks, a sequined pink-velvet pagoda for the cat, a Victrola, and an original icebox. Check ahead for the schedule of lectures and other special events.

There was a great shopping distict on Newbury street just blocks from the hotel.

This hotel was in a renovated buildiing in a very convenient location in Boston. The look was very modern and simple. The hotel staff was very friendly and it was within walking distance of everything I had to do for work. I will deffinately be staying there again when I travel to Boston for work.

Excellent location/minimal interaction

Todd, Durham/Raleigh, NC, 2007-03-06

The Hotel 140's Boston location is quite good for the room rate: half a block from a major T-station, 15-minute walk to Boston Commons. The rooms were small, but adequate for 2 people. The decor is classy. My only complaint would be that the front desk did not seem interested in informing me about the amenities (I had to discover the computer room and the exercise room on my own) and there was no material in the room itself that gave info about the hotel or surrounding area. Avoid the in-house Terra Cotta cafe if at all possible.

Cozy and Comfortable

Valerie, Seattle, WA, 2007-02-18

The hotel is located within a short walking distance of many of Boston's attractions.

The Hotel 140 is a modern, yet simple hotel for those that need only the basics. Despite the smaller rooms, they are cozy and very comfortable. The wall color adds to the calming influence of the room. You must be willing to operate from your suitcase since there is no closet or dresser. The location of the hotel in the Back Bay region of Boston and the affordability of the rooms, make this hotel extremely desirable. Please note that the exercise room only has two cardio machines- an elliptical trainer and a recumbent bicyle. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Great Location, just small rooms

Anonymous, 2006-05-28

It's very close to Newbury street, which has some great shopping.

For Boston, you can't beat the location and the price. The rooms are very modern and clean. The only drawback is size--it's definitely on the small end. But other than that had a really pleasant stay and would probably stay there again.

Jason, Boston, MA, 2006-03-18

Best way to get there is out the back entrance at Backbay trainstation. Turn left at the road and it is about 100 feet across from Hard Rock Cafe.

This hotel is in the heart of Backbay Boston. The Backbay subway and train station is in sight of the hotel. The room I was in was VERY small but this hotel is about location not how big a hotel room you have. The rooms were nice, TV a flat screen sony about as big as you would want in a small room. The shower is stand up only and for the price and location Hotel 140 comes very recomended. There are so many bars and nice restaurants in walking distance, why would you ever eat at the hotel you stay in? The breakfast was free and worth it, that is all I can say about the dining options for the hotel.

Hotel 140-Great place!

Maralyn, 2006-03-14

The Copley T-stop is just down the street, with shopping and restaurants everywhere! It is a great location for anything in Boston!

I loved this hotel!!! The rooms are small, but cozy, clean, contemporary and quiet!!! The location of this hotel is perfect for getting anywhere in Boston. If you need "space", you won't like this hotel, but I found it wonderfully European and functional.

Good Value

William, Jacksonville, FL, 2006-03-13

The Bertucci's Italian restaurant, just around the corner from the Hotel 140 was excellent, and the Hard Rock is great for burgers and music.

The Hotel 140 has been created out of part of a large old, YWCA building. The rennovations were done very competently. The rooms are small, but very functional, very clean, and, though spartan, very well deocrated. Nice color schemes, somewhat art deco in feel. The rooms would be improved by adding a small desk. There is room for one, though the owners have not seen fit to add it. This would be very helpful to most travellers, especially business. The elevator security system is disfunctional and, while I was there, one was out completely. The staff were great. Very friendly for a bunch of Yankees!!! Overall, if you are on a budget like I am. It is not a bad value for your money.
