During your Boston vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Museum of Fine Arts
One of the world's great art museums, the MFA works nonstop to become even more accessible and interesting. You're sure to find something entrancing in these magnificent collections. Every installation reflects a curatorial attitude that makes even those who go in with a feeling of obligation leave with a sense of discovery and wonder. That includes children, who can participate in a scavenger hunt, admire the mummies, or participate in family-friendly programs scheduled year-round (there are extra offerings during school vacations). The MFA is especially famous for its Impressionist paintings (including 43 Monets -- one of the largest collections outside of Paris), Asian and Old Kingdom Egyptian collections, classical art, Buddhist temple, and medieval sculpture and tapestries. There are also magnificent holdings of prints, photographs, furnishings, and decorative arts, including the finest collection of Paul Revere silver in the world. The museum is currently expanding its modern and contemporary art collections and rearranging some galleries in engaging groupings that display paintings and sculpture along with related decorative objects and furniture. The works that you might find most familiar are paintings and sculpture by Americans and Europeans. Some favorites: Renoir's Dance at Bougival, van Gogh's Postman Joseph Roulin, Childe Hassam's Boston Common at Twilight, Gilbert Stuart's 1796 portrait of George Washington, John Singleton Copley's 1768 portrait of Paul Revere, a bronze casting of Edgar Degas's sculpture Little Dancer, John Singer Sargent's The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit, and Fitz Hugh Lane's Luminist masterpieces.None of this comes cheap: The MFA's adult admission fee (which covers two visits within 30 days) is among the highest in the country. A Boston CityPass is a great deal if you plan to visit enough of the other included attractions. To begin your visit at the museum, pick up a floor plan at the information desk, or take a free guided tour (weekdays except Mon holidays at 10:30am and 1:30pm, with an additional tour on Wed at 6:15pm, and Sat at 10:30am and 1pm). The I. M. Pei-designed West Wing (1981) contains the main entrance, an auditorium, and an atrium with a tree-lined "sidewalk" cafe. There is also a restaurant and a cafeteria. The excellent Museum Shop carries abundant souvenirs and a huge book selection.Special exhibitions during the lifespan of this book include Art Deco 1910-1939 (Aug 22, 2004-Jan 9, 2005); Speed, Style and Beauty: Cars from the Ralph Lauren Collection (Mar 6-July 3, 2005); The Quilts of Gee's Bend (June 1-Aug 21, 2005); and Tiffany Jewels (Sept 18-Dec 31, 2005).The museum is currently expanding: construction of the new East Wing, designed by Norman Foster, began in early 2004. While work proceeds, the museum is rearranging some collections and closing some exhibition spaces, so check ahead before visiting if you have your heart set on seeing a particular piece of art.MFA FYI--The Huntington Avenue entrance to the Museum of Fine Arts is usually much less busy than the West Wing lobby. Walk back along Huntington Avenue when you leave the T, enter from the curved driveway, and stop to take in the John Singer Sargent murals.
Copp's Hill Burying Ground
The second-oldest cemetery (1659) in the city is the burial place of Cotton Mather and his family, Robert Newman, and Prince Hall. Hall, a prominent member of the free black community that occupied the north slope of the hill in colonial times, fought at Bunker Hill and established the first black Masonic lodge. The highest point in the North End, Copp's Hill was the site of a windmill and of the British batteries that destroyed the village of Charlestown during the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775. Charlestown is clearly visible (look for the masts of USS Constitution) across the Inner Harbor. No gravestone rubbing is allowed. To continue on the Freedom Trail: Follow Hull Street down the hill to Commercial Street (note that there's no crosswalk on Commercial at the dangerous intersection with Hull) and follow the trail to North Washington Street and across the bridge. Follow signs and the trail to the Charlestown Navy Yard.
Harvard University Art Museums
The Fogg Art Museum, the Busch-Reisinger Museum, and the Arthur M. Sackler Museum house some 160,000 works, from ancient sculptures to contemporary photos. The exhibit spaces also serve as teaching and research facilities. If you prefer to explore with a guide, take a tour of the Fogg weekdays at 11am, of the Busch-Reisinger weekdays at 1pm (both year-round), or of the Sackler at 2pm weekdays September through June, Wednesdays only in July and August. The Fogg Art Museum (32 Quincy St., near Broadway) is composed of two floors of galleries opening off an impressive 16th-century Italian stone courtyard. Each of the 19 rooms here displays something different -- among the offerings are 17th-century Dutch and Flemish landscapes, 19th-century British and American paintings and drawings, French paintings and drawings from the 18th century through the Impressionist period, and contemporary sculpture. Changing exhibits often draw on the museum's extensive collections of paintings, drawings, prints, and photos. The Busch-Reisinger Museum in Werner Otto Hall (enter through the Fogg) concentrates on the painting, sculpture, and decorative art of northern and central Europe, specifically Germany. Particularly notable are the early-20th-century collections, including works by Klee, Feininger, Kandinsky, and artists and designers associated with the Bauhaus. The Arthur M. Sackler Museum (485 Broadway, at Quincy St.) houses Asian, ancient, Islamic, and Later Indian art. Here you'll find internationally renowned Chinese jades, superb Roman sculptures, Greek vases, Korean ceramics, Japanese woodblock prints, and Persian miniature paintings and calligraphy.

Nice Hotel

Kelly, Providence, RI

The Prudential stop for the green line T is right in front of the hotel.

The Colonnade Hotel was very nice. Our room was clean and spacious. Unfortunately the rooftop pool was closed. Check-in and -out was very quick and easy. Hotel personnel were friendly. The in-lobby restaurant seemed overpriced, so we did not end up eating there. The price for the hotel was fair, and though it was nothing extraordinary, it was nice enough.

Great Location, Friendly, Reasonable

Gary, Miami, FL

We love to visit high quality stores and look for good value. This was a shoppers delight of well known stores, small boutiques, and no sales tax on clothing. Don't miss the small art galleries and places to stop for tea or coffee and a pastry. The area is great for people watching.

If you like to shop in Boston, see the sights, and want good value, The Colonnade is for you. The staff is very friendly and helpful. You can walk to Newbury Street. The Mall at Prudential is right across the street. There are many fine restaurants in the area. There are lots of historic sites in the area. You will mix in with tourists and the many residents of the nearby brownstones and condos. Our room was adequate size, the TV small, and the bathroom small. The beds were very comfortable. Everything was immaculate. There are lots of hotels to choose from in the area. This one was a bargain, but there is nothing cheap about it.

Great Location

Jennifer, Chicago, IL

My husband and I both work in the food industry, so getting good bites is always a MUST. For Lunch, we recomend heading to Neuberry St to either Sonsie or Stephany's both walking distance from the hotel! We also happened to taste a lot of different clam chowders in town, but left the most pleased with Legals "light" clam chowder -it was superb!

Overall, our stay at the Colonnade was a pleasant one. Nothing really spectacular, but at the same time nothing went wrong. We stayed in a King Size Deluxe room, and was A LOT smaller than what I expected, however as we explored Boston I realized that it "fit" the Colonial city. Room Servie was exceptional though- sometime we would have our meals within ten minutes! The staff was great too!The concierge gave us great recomendations and everyone at the front desk was very polite and friendly. The location was ideal! Only a few city blocks from Neuberry Street and across the street from the Prudential shopping center. Also, down the street was The Copley Shopping center. Needless to say everything else Fenway Park, Little Italy, Airport, and Meuseums was just a short cab ride away!

Overall business trip review

Patrick, Seattle, WA, 2007-03-13

There is St. Francis chapel in the Prudential center across the street for weekend services. There is also shopping and dining in the Prudential center as well. The Colonnade is a 10-minute walk from Skipjacks, a very good seafood restaurant which I highly recommend.

The Colonnade is staffed by friendly courteous people who saw to my every need, especially the Bell staff, I appreciated that very much. The business center was adequate, I would have preferred more modern software and hardware. Although sufficient for my needs, I prefer slightly higher standards for a hotel catering to business clients (Office 2007 and newer hardware). The room was clean and confortable, but the bathroom had paint peeling and the shower curtain was torn from the hooks in a few places. The restaurant served great coffee and had a very attentive staff, a simple nod or eye-contact got the attention of the staff and they were quick with their service. However, the restaurant was VERY EXPENSIVE and I consider it over-priced.

Great location

Debbie, Kansas City, MO, 2007-03-11

A grocery store with various hot food bars was less then a block away, and we purchased food and snacks there daily.

The Collonade is in a great location. We used the subway, and the nearest stop was directly outside our front door. The Prudential Center was across the street, and it connected to the Marriott Hotel. We took the trolley tour of the historic sights in Boston, and we walked less than a block to purchase those tickets and catch the ride. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful, and our room was clean and comfortable!

The Prudential Center is across the street and has a wide array of shopping and eating. Skywalks connect you to other shopping and dining venues as well.

Close to many historical places in Boston. There is a nice tour-bus that stops right in fron of the lobby. The hotel is located nearby a large shoping complex.

The hotel location was very convenient for my vacation purposes. The room seamed somehow old but it was very clean. The staff was nice and friendly.

GOOD ~!

Anonymous, Los Angeles, CA, 2006-12-20

Go to the prudential center. And visit the restaurant at the top of it. It might be gorgeous if you are with your sweetheart.

Colonade hotel is in a suitable place to visit boston. You can see the prudential center and subway station near the front gate of the hotel. And the staffs are very helpful. You can get good informaiton from them. But at first, they assigned me a noisy room that is next to a renovatig room. The accident is a little dissapointing. Except for that, the facility and other conditions are very good.

My review of Colonnade Hotel

Anonymous, 2006-12-18

There is a breakfast place down the block called Thortons. It has great food and it wont cost you a kings ransome either.

We were unaware of the construction that was going to be happening during our stay. We were put in a room right next to where all the work was being done and they usually started at 9 in the morning. That being said, everything else about the hotel was great especially the staff. Everyone was more than willing to give us a helping hand.
