USS Constitution Museum
Just inland from the vessel, the museum features participatory exhibits that allow visitors to hoist a flag, fire a cannon, swing in a hammock, and learn more about the ship. The interactive computer displays and naval artifacts appeal to visitors of all ages. A new exhibit about the Barbary War (the only such exhibit in the United States) allows you to decide whether to risk a ship in the Mediterranean. The museum's collections include more than 3,000 items, arranged and interpreted in ways that put them in context.At the navy yard here, National Park Service rangers (tel. 617/242-5601) staff an information booth and give free 1-hour guided tours of the base.To continue on the Freedom Trail: Follow the trail up Constitution Road, crossing Chelsea Street, and continue to the Bunker Hill Monument. A more interesting, slightly longer route runs from Chelsea Street and Rutherford Avenue (back at the bridge) across City Square Park.
Franklin Park Zoo
The Franklin Park Zoo is becoming more and more enjoyable -- for animals as well as people. From June to September, you can visit the popular, colorful Butterfly Landing enclosure. On the Outback Trail, you can see kangaroos, wallabies, emus, and cockatoos. Serengeti Crossing is home to zebras, ibex, ostriches, and wildebeests. Other installations house cheetahs, lions, snow leopards, and African wild dogs. The African Tropical Forest exhibit is a sprawling complex where you'll see more than 50 species of animals. This is the domain of the Western lowland gorillas, which appear to be roaming free in an approximation of their natural habitat. If you're traveling with animal-mad youngsters, the Children's Zoo is both entertaining and educational.Schedule at least half a day for a visit to the zoo. Franklin Park is 40 minutes from downtown by public transportation, and the walk from the main gate and parking area to the entrance is fairly long, especially for those with little legs.
John F. Kennedy National Historic Site
A property of the National Park Service, the 35th president's birthplace has been restored to appear as it did in 1917. The guided ranger-led tour discusses domestic life of the period and the roots of the Kennedy family. If you miss the last guided tour, ask about the self-guided option. One-hour walking tours of the neighborhood start at 12:45pm on weekends. Call ahead to double-check hours, which are set each January.
