University Lodge, Amherst, Massachusetts

The University Lodge is perfect for someone who needs downtown access. The Lodge is one block from downtown Amherst, and is within walking distance to both Amherst College and the University of Massachusetts. The Lodge has 20 guest rooms. All include two double beds, both smoking and non-smoking, in-room coffee makers, cable television, and have only exterior access. Small pets are allowed in smoking permissible rooms at a 20.00USD per night fee. The office is open from 8AM to 9PM daily with a 24 hour answering service. Those arriving after 9pm should check in at Howard Johnson, 401 Russell Street, Route 9, in Hadley, MA. Check ins at Howard Johnson are not provided shuttle service to the Lodge. However, the Lodge rate would be honored, based upon availability, at Howard Johnson for those arriving after 9pm.

Location, location, location

This hotel is very close to downtown which has many great places to eat. The Fresh Side (a little tea house) is amazing if you like Asia food by the way.

If you are going to the Mullin Center to see a show this is the place to stay. It is less then a mile and a half from the center and there is a bus stop just down the hill. The room was very clean and well cared for. There was enough room for all my things in the bathroom and closet, but the bathroom lacked wash clothes. Check out time is 11:00am, which is helpful when you are out late for a show.

As the location of the property might be great, close to UMASS and the city of Amherst I would not recommend this hotel for the following reason: 1. room smelled of meldow; 2. there was no room service as far as cleaning goes; 3. only at the check out point I find out that you had to request the cleaning service and even than I was not sure if that was standard procedure or someone was covering up somebody's mistake; 4. no towels, no hangers to hang coats,no coffee...etc; 5. the staff at the reception desk uninformed; 6. the room gave the impression of unkept.

Lack of Service

There's no service at this hotel. They missed/forgot my wakeup call and there were bugs in the room and bathroom. The only plus is that it's very close UMASS, which you can walk to.

Poor Check-Procedure

There is plenty of stores, restaurants and nightlife activities a short distance from this hotel.

The Universite Lodge was very nice in general. The room was clean and the beds were comfortable. My main complaint with this hotel is that we were checking in late and were not informed that we would have to go to a different hotel to check in. We were lost in getting to the hotel and when we called the lodge for directions at 8:30, an answering machine picked up indicating that the offfice hours are from 8am to 11pm and to leave a message and someone will get back to you. Since we were calling for directions, I was hopeful that I would get a call back, but did not. We got directions and upon arrival, there was a sign on the door instructing "late check-in's" to go to the Howard Johnsons to check-in. Additionally, we received a phone call in our room at 10:54am the following morning infoming us that check-out was at eleven. I have stayed at many hotels and B&B's and have never received a phone call telling me that it was time to check out. I would recommend to anyone staying at this hotel to ensure that the office will be open upon their arrival.
