During your Boston vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Old North Church
Officially named Christ Church, this is the oldest church building in Boston (1723). The building is in the style of Sir Christopher Wren. In the original steeple, sexton Robert Newman hung two lanterns on the night of April 18, 1775, to signal Paul Revere that British troops were setting out for Lexington and Concord in boats across the Charles River, not on foot ("One if by land, and two if by sea"). The steeple fell in hurricanes in 1804 and 1954; the current version is an exact copy of the original. The 190-foot spire, long a reference point for sailors, appears on navigational charts to this day. And how's this for a coincidence: Newman was a great-grandson of George Burroughs, one of the victims of the Salem witch trials of 1692.Members of the Revere family attended this church (a plaque is on pew 54); famous visitors have included Presidents James Monroe, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Gerald R. Ford, and Queen Elizabeth II. There are markers and plaques throughout; note the bust of George Washington, reputedly the first memorial to the first president. The gardens on the north side of the church (dotted with more plaques) are open to the public. On the south side of the church, volunteers maintain an 18th-century garden. Proceeds from the quirky gift shop and museum go to support the church.Free tours of the church begin every 15 minutes. The 50-minute behind-the-scenes tour ($8 adults, $5 children under 17) includes visits to the steeple and the crypt. Tours are available on weekdays and on weekend afternoons from June to mid-August, and the rest of the year by appointment. Reservations are recommended. To continue on the Freedom Trail: Cross Salem Street onto Hull Street, and walk uphill toward Copp's Hill Burying Ground. On the left you'll pass 44 Hull St., a private residence that's the narrowest (10 ft. wide) house in Boston.
First Public School/Benjamin Franklin Statue
A colorful folk-art mosaic in the sidewalk marks the site of the first public school in the country. It was founded in 1634, 2 years before Harvard College. Samuel Adams, Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock, and Cotton Mather studied there. The original building (1645) was demolished to make way for the expansion of King's Chapel, and the school moved across the street. The prestigious institution is now called Boston Latin School. Other alumni include Charles Bulfinch, Ralph Waldo Emerson, George Santayana, Arthur Fiedler, and Leonard Bernstein.Behind the fence in the courtyard to your left is the Benjamin Franklin statue, the first portrait statue erected in Boston (1856). Franklin was born in Boston in 1706 and was apprenticed to his half-brother James, a printer, but they got along so poorly that in 1723 Benjamin ran away to Philadelphia. Plaques on the base of the statue describe Franklin's numerous accomplishments. The lovely granite building behind the statue is Old City Hall (1865), designed in Second Empire style by Arthur Gilman (who laid out the Back Bay) and Gridley J. F. Bryant, and opened in 1865. The administration moved to Government Center in 1969, and the building now houses commercial tenants. To continue on the Freedom Trail: Follow School Street to Washington Street.
The Institute of Contemporary Art
Across from the Hynes Convention Center, the ICA mounts rotating exhibits of 20th- and 21st-century art, including painting, sculpture, photography, and video and performance art. Its shows are among the most imaginative around, focusing on everything from baseball to Mexico. The institute also offers films, lectures, musical performances, poetry readings, and educational programs for children and adults. The 1886 building, originally a police station, is a showpiece in its own right. The ICA's profile is on the rise. It's in the process of building a new museum at Fan Pier, on the South Boston waterfront near the federal courthouse. A $37 million project designed by the pioneering New York firm Diller + Scofidio, the new building is scheduled to open in 2006. Check this space for details and updates in future editions.

good value for cost

We ate breakfast at the IHOP next door to the hotel and enjoyed it very much. There is also a McDonalds next to the hotel.

We would definitely stay here again on our next visit. We were just needing a basic hotel that was near Boston College. The staff was friendly and helpful. The room was nice, clean and comfortable. We felt it was a great value.

Was a difficult location

Valerie, 2007-03-07

Pancake House right next door and a Mcdonalds.

Overall I would have to say the hotel was not the best. there was no elevator, I tried to order take out and the resturant I called said they didn't come to the area which scared me. though it wasnt very far from the location that i needed to get to every day the taxi service was very expensive $25 each way plus tip. but the rooms were very clean.

Great deal

Anonymous, 2006-10-11

There are many bars that have live music and entertainment a short distance away. The crowds are alot of fun.

The Days Inn Boston was very spacious and well kept. There was an IHOP right next door as well as a Starbucks and a shopping center. Overall, I was extremely pleased with my stay.

Nice location to get in and out of Sorrow Drive very quickly, in our case to Northeastern University.

We only slept there and left early in the morning but it was clean and the staff was very friendly and efficient. Several restuarants right next door, Fast food and another.

My review of Days Inn Boston

Christine, 2006-06-25

Across the street is a bike/walking path that goes for miles around the Charles River. A short walk you can cross the bridge to Cambridge side and sit on benches and watch rowers practicing down the river.

The Days Inn Boston was chosen in part for price and availability as we were there for business as well as pleasure. It may well be best value in Boston, as advertised outside on a sign, as they can get expensive if the others book up. The motel itself was very clean. Beds were comfortable and the dressing area outside the bathroom was convenient. Location is nice for the Charles River across a busy road. There is no where to eat without hopping in a car except for an IHOP next door. There is no pool. It was not close enough to the T (subway) a bus is needed to get to that. So, my husband insisted on driving everywhere which can be a real scary experience and was.
