During your Chicago vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio
For the first 20 years of Wright's career, this remarkable complex served first and foremost as the sanctuary from which Wright was to design and execute more than 130 of an extraordinary output of 430 completed buildings. The home began as a simple shingled cottage that Wright built for his bride in 1889 at the age of 22, but it became a work in progress, as Wright remodeled it constantly until 1911 (he left there in 1909). During this highly fertile period, the house was Wright's showcase and laboratory, but it also embraces many idiosyncratic features molded to his own needs rather than those of a client. With many add-ons -- including a barrel-vaulted children's playroom and a studio with an octagonal balcony suspended by chains -- the place has a certain whimsy that others might have found less livable. This, however, was not an architect's masterpiece, but the master's home, and every room in it can be savored for the view it reflects of the workings of a remarkable mind. The Home and Studio Foundation has restored the residence and studio to its 1909 vintage. Allow 1 hour for the tour, more time if you want to browse in the bookshop.
Shoreline Sightseeing
Shoreline schedules 30-minute lake cruises every half-hour from its three dock locations: the Shedd Aquarium, Navy Pier, and Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park. Shoreline has also gotten in on the popularity of architecture tours by offering its own version, narrated by an architectural guide (with higher prices than their regular tours). A water taxi also runs every half-hour from Navy Pier to both the Sears Tower and the Shedd Aquarium. One-way tickets for the water taxi are $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, and $3 for children under 12; all-day passes cost $12 for adults and $6 for children.
Fine Arts Building
A worthwhile brief stop for architecture and history buffs, this 1885 building was originally a showroom for Studebaker carriages. In 1917, it was converted into an arts center with offices, shops, two theaters, and studios for musicians, artists, and writers. Its upper stories sheltered a number of well-known publications (The Saturday Evening Post, Dial) and provided offices for such luminaries as Frank Lloyd Wright, sculptor Lorado Taft, and L. Frank Baum, author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Harriet Monroe published her magazine, Poetry, here and first introduced American readers to Carl Sandburg, T. S. Eliot, and Ezra Pound. Before the literary lions prowled its halls, the building also served for a short time as a rallying base for suffragettes. Located throughout the building are a number of interesting studios and musical-instrument shops. Take at least a quick walk through the marble-and-wood lobby, then take the vintage elevator to the top floor to see the spectacular murals. Allow a half-hour.

perfect trip possible?

SANDRA, Chicago, IL

Fantastic location! Short walk to dining, night life, shopping, lake front and more. Just can't say enough about the location - very exciting, Chicago at its best.

This was my de-stress weekend from the suburbs to the big City. The Talbott Hotel has a very lovely, warm, upscale environment at a surprisingly fair rate. I stayed on the smoking floor, which I am surprised and pleased hotels can still offer. However, I think the rooms should be equipped with portable air filters; just because I smoke doesn't mean I want the room to be filled with smoke - and it makes it unpleasant for my nonsmoking visitors. I appreciated the fact the windows opened slightly for the fresh air. I can't stand being in an office or hotel where the windows don't open - makes me feel cutoff and isolated from nature. The room was generous in size and very well appointed with a comfortable sitting area for visitors and a desk for reading and adding up my weekend expenditures. I also very much appreciate the ambiant lighting options available. Chicago seems to be under construction everywhere and while it is fasinating to watch, the construction right outside my window at 7 a.m. on Saturday until midafternoon was very loud and annoying. The hotel offered another room when one became available, and offered to pack and relocate me, although I did not take them up - (I went shopping instead of napping). I typically treat myself to room service. I ordered eggs sunny side up, they came cooked differently. The soup was the worst - looked horrible and tasted terrible (didn't eat it, bucks down the drain). The maple oatmeal was extremely tasty so I tried it again but was disappointed with a cold, overcooked blob (I ate it anyway and it was tasty - just not as tasty as the first time). Check out is at noon. I checked out around 10 a.m. I agreed to have the final tab emailed to me as room service had not yet charged me for that morning's breakfast. That was almost a week ago and no email, no final tab. I'm sure my charge card has been charged and I can find out what my total expenditures are from them, although I think the hotel should have told me. Would I recommend the Talbott or stay there again - possibly, but with so many places to stay I'm sure I will try something else.

Outstanding service

Anonymous, San Francisco, CA

Do ask for the gym pass. It's a short and beautiful walk away to a super gym with beautiful pool.

The Talbott is a very good choice, paticularly for women travelling alone. The outstanding features are location and the superior service provided by the hotels terrific concierges. I was offered great advice, maps and directions and everything else I needed. Even the valet attendents were helpful, courteous and prompt. You cannot beat the hotel's location for proximity to shopping. Across the street is one of Chicago's chicest wine bars. Other outstanding restaurants are close by. The Talbott is not glamorous, but the beds are super comfortable and the new bathrooms are well outfitted. One other samll bit, the tub was lovely, so why not augment the range of products in the bathroom to include a body wash suitable for use in the deep soaking tubs. The new furnishings are not quite complete and the hallway carpets are not up to par, but otherwise, the accomodation was very good and the service was superior. I will certainly saty there again on my next trip, provided the rates are competitve.

Wonderful get-away!

Susan, 2007-03-11

The concierge recommended Tavern on Rush for Sunday brunch - perfect!

My husband and I travel quite a bit and were most surprised at the lovely, roomy accommodations at the Talbott. We actually had a suite with a large bedroom, a living room, and large bathroom with separate shower, jacuzzi tub and twin sink areas. The Rush St. area offers lots of interesting sights and restaurants within a short walk. This was a great place for a city stay.

Excellent overall

Bernard, Phoenix, AZ, 2007-03-03

1. Many restaurants and shopping are a short walk away. 2. Access to central city is a short taxi ride.

The friendliness of the entire staff was excellent The location in Chicago was great for restaurant access, shopping and ease of access to central city business contacts. I'll stay there again on other trips to Chicago.

A piece of heaven in Chicago

The Magnificant Mile - Many malls all on the same street are just a short walk from the hotel.

We enjoyed every minute of our stay. The one bedroom suite was beautiful, the fabrics were luxurious and welcoming. The weather was lowsy but the hotel bar and grill was romantic, peaceful and the food was very tasty. The location could not be better within walking distance to the Magnificant Mile and the Hancock center. For someone who had never been to Chicago, the neighborhood was a welcome suprise. We felt safe on the streets well into the night.

Great Place, Great Staff, Great Location

Patrick, Detroit, MI, 2007-02-19

Shopping, dining and entertainment opportunities are all a short walk on Rush, State, Michigan, etc.

Everything about this hotel was excellent, from the friendly staff, to the beautiful room, to the cozy bar/restaurant, to the excellent central location within Chicago. The staff of this hotel went well out of their way to make our stay comfortable, relaxing and most enjoyable. I have been to Chicago many times and none of the hotels, including higher priced hotels, compared to our experience at the Talbott.

My review of The Talbott Hotel

susan, Madison, WI, 2007-02-18

The Magnificent Mile is just a couple blocks away and it is easy walking distance from many great restaurants.

The Talbott was a very elegant, well-maintained boutique hotel. The room was large and well-appointed and comfortable and the elegant tile-floor bathroom included all the necessary amenities. The proximity to Michigan Avenue provided easy access to shopping and restaurants. And most importantly, the staff was very attentive and accomodating.

Great staff, great location

David, Dallas, TX, 2007-02-17

Too many great restaurants to mention here.

The staff at the Talbott Hotel is very professional, positive, and treats you like an individual. The hotel is located at one end of the Miracle Mile and within walking distance of 300 restaurants, many of which are world class.

European Boutique

michael, Lexington, KY, 2007-02-01

Great location, just off busy Rush Street. Dignified, unassuming lobby in the small European tradition. Rooms first rate, with very comfortable bedding. Very good value for the money--I would have expected to pay much more for the room. Wonderful, small breakfast room with great food features, mostly homemade and not your typical fare. Also, it is quite inexpensive. Highly recommend the Talbott.
