During your Chicago vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Auditorium Building and Theatre
A truly grand theater with historic landmark status, the Auditorium is worth a visit to experience late-19th-century Chicago opulence. Designed and built in 1889 by Louis Sullivan and Dankmar Adler, the Auditorium was a wonder of the world: the heaviest (110,000 tons) and most massive modern edifice on earth, the most fireproof building ever constructed, and the tallest building in Chicago. It was also the first large-scale building to be electrically lighted, and its theater was the first in the country to install air-conditioning.The 4,000-seat theater, which today is the scene for Broadway touring musicals, is a marvel of visionary design and engineering. Originally the home of the Chicago Opera Company, Sullivan and Adler's masterpiece is defined by powerful arches lit by thousands of bulbs and features Sullivan's trademark ornamentation -- in this case, elaborate golden stenciling and gold plaster medallions. It's equally renowned for otherworldly acoustics and unobstructed sight lines. In the days when the Auditorium was the leading theater of Chicago, the hydraulically operated stage could be lowered from view, creating a ballroom capable of accommodating 8,000 guests.During World War II, the building sheltered GIs, and its theater stage was turned into a bowling alley. The theater reopened in 1967 following a $3-million renovation made possible through the fundraising efforts of the nonprofit Auditorium Theatre Council. Remnants of the building's halcyon days remain. Don't miss the lobby fronting Michigan Avenue, with its faux ornamental marble columns, molded ceilings, mosaic floors, and Mexican onyx walls. Another inside tip: From the Roosevelt University entrance around the corner on Michigan Avenue, take the elevator to the school's 10th-floor library reading room and have a look at what was once the city's first top-floor dining room. Its palatial, barrel-vaulted ceiling, and marvelous views of Grant Park and the lake will make you want to brush up on your Dewey Decimal System. The best way to see everything is to take a 1-hour guided tour, offered on Mondays between 10am and 4pm (call tel. 312/431-2354 to make reservations). Tours cost $6 for adults, $3 for seniors and students.Allow a half-hour, 1 hour if you take the guided tour.
Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum
The building may be historic, but some of the attractions here will captivate the most jaded video-game addict. The first planetarium in the Western Hemisphere, it was founded by Sears, Roebuck and Co. executive Max Adler, who imported a Zeiss projector from Germany in 1930.The good news for present-day visitors is that the planetarium has been updated since then. Your first stop should be the modern Sky Pavilion, where the don't-miss experience is the StarRider Theater. Settle down under the massive dome, and you'll take a half-hour long interactive virtual-reality trip through the Milky Way and into deep space, featuring a computer-generated 3D-graphics projection system and controls in the armrest of each person's seat. Six high-resolution video projectors form a seamless image above your head -- you'll feel like you're literally floating in space. (On Thurs, Fri, and Sat nights, the theater is open late for SonicVision, a head-trippy digital animation show with an alternative music soundtrack.) If you're looking for more entertainment, the Sky Theater shows movies with an astronomical bent. Recent shows have included Secrets of Saturn and Mars Now!, both of which are updated as new discoveries are made. The planetarium's exhibit galleries feature a variety of displays and interactive activities designed to foster understanding of our solar system and more. The best current exhibit is Bringing the Heavens to Earth, which traces the ways different cultures have tried to make sense of astronomical phenomena. The planetarium's signature exhibit, From the Night Sky to the Big Bang, traces changing views of the cosmos over 1,000 years and features artifacts from the planetarium's extensive collection of historical astronomical instruments (all of which can get a bit boring for kids unless they're real astronomy nuts). The museum's cafe provides views of the lakefront and skyline. On the first Friday evening of the month, visitors can view dramatic close-ups of the moon, the planets, and distant galaxies through a closed-circuit monitor connected to the planetarium's Doane Observatory telescope.Allow 2 hours, more if you want to see more than one show.
The Smart Museum of Art
The University of Chicago's fine arts museum looks rather modest, but it packs a lot of talent into a compact space. Its permanent collection of more than 7,000 paintings and sculptures spans Western and Eastern civilizations and ranges from classical antiquity to the present day. Bona fide treasures include ancient Greek vases, Chinese bronzes, and Old Master paintings; Frank Lloyd Wright furniture; Tiffany glass; sculptures by Degas, Matisse, and Rodin; and 20th-century paintings and sculptures by Mark Rothko, Arthur Dove, Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, Henry Moore, and Chicago sculptor Richard Hunt. Built in 1974, the contemporary building doesn't really fit in with the Gothic style of other campus buildings, but its sculpture garden and outdoor seating area make a nice place for quiet contemplation. The museum also has a gift shop and cafe. Allow 1 hour.

Great Location

Anonymous, 2007-03-13

There were several great restaurants within a short walking distance.

The Sutton Place Hotel was located within walking distance of fine restaurants. Perfect for the business dinners I had. The hotel was very comfortable, great in-room movie selection, decent fitness area. Internet service was good. I liked that the bathroom had a separate shower and tub. Bath amenities were very nice, especially the bathrobe. I also like the ambiance in the hotel. The lobby was very nicely decorated. I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel and would definitely stay there again.

Great location

Amalia, New York, NY, 2007-03-11

The Pankcake House right across the street is a great value. You can get a full pancake + eggs + sausage meal, with coffee or juice for just under $7.

The staff at the hotel were very efficient. Our somewhat late check-in was a breeze. The only thing is that we requested a lakeside view; we could spy a bit of the lake between 2 big buildings. But the price cannot be beat, for the comfort of the room and the hotel's location. The surrounding aread had lots of cute stores and nice bars and restaurants; and the Magnificent Mile was only a couple of blocks away.

Feel a real part of this great City!

Cathy, Kansas City, MO, 2007-02-16

Pancake house, Carmine's (Italian) and many clubs, shopping on Michigan Avenue only a few blocks away. Walgreens for occasional necessities just down the block. Nice place to stay!

The Sutton Place Hotel was a great romantic getaway for us on Valentine's week. We had wonderful service and found the hotel both stylish and very homey. It was small but had everything you need. We loved our room, bed and the bathroom was great! Big Bathtub and seperate shower with exceptional water pressure. This hotel thought of all the extra little things that make a stay wonderful! Ice, chocolates on bed and turn down the bed service. A drawer for make up, c.d's for music to keep you relaxed and happy. All and All a great place. We loved Carmine's down the street and the Pancake house full of locals but great place for breakfast. Close to everything but in a neighborhood so you feel a bit like a local instead of just a tourist. We'll be Back!

Restaurants galore. 2 blocks from Michigan Ave. 20 minute walk from Navy Pier.

This hotel was in a great location with where we were able to walk to all the locations we wanted to reach. This rooms were very clean and simple. It was nice there was a dvd player in the room which will help in determining a place to stay in the future should be bring our child. Very large closet which kept our luggage out of site. Just a great overall hotel.

Business Hotel in Artsy Area

Robert, Memphis, TN, 2006-05-10

Gibson's Steakhouse, Italian restaurant, Irish Pub food, and Community Bakery all in two block area.

Pretty cool hotel if you are a business traveler . Fairly large hotel with a quaint "small hotel feel". Not right in the middle, but yet still close enough. Rooms were modern, clean, and comfortable. Bathroom has great deep tubs and very nice powerful showers. The location is great; plenty of restaurants, upscale stores, and nightlife in the two block radius. Highly recommended.

If you're looking for bargains...

Eric, Dayton, OH, 2005-08-18

Go up a few extra blocks to Division and get your drink-on for much cheaper at places like Mothers, Mothers Too, and some place called, like, The Lodge or something. I forget. See? It works...

...this ain't the place for you. But it's enough of a value-add to not sting too badly. The Sutton Place is indicitive of the Gold Coast neighborhood it's in the middle of - every time you step out the door, it's a sixty-dollarectomy. That's just the reality of the situation. But be that as it may, eat- and drink-wise, pick a direction and head in it; you can't go wrong. The Sutton's staff is all aces and there's always a cab at the ready should you temporarily need less swanky surroundings. Here's your metaphor: It actually costs LESS to order room-service beer than it does to buy them in the hotel's bar. In short, if it only had a pool, it'd be pretty unstoppable.
