During your Chicago vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum
Built into the rise of an ancient sand dune -- once the shoreline of Lake Michigan -- Chicago's newest museum bills itself as "an environmental museum for the 21st century." While that might sound fairly dull, most of the exhibits here are very hands-on, making this a good stop for active kids. Shaded by huge cottonwoods and maples, the sand-colored exterior with its horizontal lines composed of interlocking trapezoids itself resembles a sand dune. Rooftop-level walkways give strollers a view of birds and other urban wildlife below. Paths wind through gardens planted with native Midwestern wildflowers and grasses, and trace the shore of the newly restored North Pond.Inside, large windows create a dialogue between the outdoor environment and the indoor exhibits designed to illuminate it. Don't miss the Butterfly Haven, a greenhouse habitat where about 25 Midwestern species of butterflies and moths carry on their complex life cycles (wander through as a riot of color flutters all around you). Another top exhibit is City Science, a 3,000-square-foot, two-story "house" with functional rooms where visitors can view the pipes and ducts that connect our homes with power sources miles away. Water Lab is a model river system demonstrating the uses and abuses that a waterway undergoes as it meanders from rural to urban environments. It's probably safe to say that the Children's Gallery is the only place in town where kids can clamber in and out of a model ground-squirrel town or explore a beaver lodge from the inside. The sunny Butterfly Cafe offers fresh, healthy meals cafeteria-style. In summer, get there early to enjoy coffee and a muffin -- and the lovely surroundings -- with joggers and other locals.Allow 1 hour.
The Smart Museum of Art
The University of Chicago's fine arts museum looks rather modest, but it packs a lot of talent into a compact space. Its permanent collection of more than 7,000 paintings and sculptures spans Western and Eastern civilizations and ranges from classical antiquity to the present day. Bona fide treasures include ancient Greek vases, Chinese bronzes, and Old Master paintings; Frank Lloyd Wright furniture; Tiffany glass; sculptures by Degas, Matisse, and Rodin; and 20th-century paintings and sculptures by Mark Rothko, Arthur Dove, Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, Henry Moore, and Chicago sculptor Richard Hunt. Built in 1974, the contemporary building doesn't really fit in with the Gothic style of other campus buildings, but its sculpture garden and outdoor seating area make a nice place for quiet contemplation. The museum also has a gift shop and cafe. Allow 1 hour.
Lincoln Park Conservatory
Just beyond the zoo's northeast border is a lovely botanical garden housed in a soaring glass-domed structure. Inside are four great halls filled with thousands of plants. If you're visiting Chicago in the wintertime, I can't think of a better prescription for mood elevation than the conservatory's lush haven of greenery. The Palm House features giant palms and rubber trees (including a 50-ft. fiddle-leaf rubber tree dating from 1891), the Fernery nurtures plants that grow close to the forest floor, and the Tropical House is a shiny symphony of flowering trees, vines, and bamboo. The fourth environment is the Show House, where seasonal flower shows are held.Even better than the plants inside, however, might be what lies outside the front doors. The expansive lawn with its French garden and lovely fountain on the conservatory's south side is one of the best places in town for an informal picnic (especially nice if you're visiting the zoo and want to avoid the congestion at its food concession venues). The Lincoln Park Conservatory has a sister facility on the city's West Side, in Garfield Park, that is much more remarkable. In fact, the 2-acre Garfield Park Conservatory, 300 N. Central Park Ave. (tel. 312/746-5100), designed by the great landscape architect Jens Jensen in 1907, is one of the largest gardens under glass in the world. It's open 365 days a year from 9am to 5pm. Unfortunately, a rather blighted neighborhood with a high crime rate surrounds the conservatory. If you want to see it, I recommend driving rather than public transportation.Allow a half-hour for the Lincoln Park Conservatory.

Great Location

Anonymous, 2007-03-13

There were several great restaurants within a short walking distance.

The Sutton Place Hotel was located within walking distance of fine restaurants. Perfect for the business dinners I had. The hotel was very comfortable, great in-room movie selection, decent fitness area. Internet service was good. I liked that the bathroom had a separate shower and tub. Bath amenities were very nice, especially the bathrobe. I also like the ambiance in the hotel. The lobby was very nicely decorated. I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel and would definitely stay there again.

Great location

Amalia, New York, NY, 2007-03-11

The Pankcake House right across the street is a great value. You can get a full pancake + eggs + sausage meal, with coffee or juice for just under $7.

The staff at the hotel were very efficient. Our somewhat late check-in was a breeze. The only thing is that we requested a lakeside view; we could spy a bit of the lake between 2 big buildings. But the price cannot be beat, for the comfort of the room and the hotel's location. The surrounding aread had lots of cute stores and nice bars and restaurants; and the Magnificent Mile was only a couple of blocks away.

Feel a real part of this great City!

Cathy, Kansas City, MO, 2007-02-16

Pancake house, Carmine's (Italian) and many clubs, shopping on Michigan Avenue only a few blocks away. Walgreens for occasional necessities just down the block. Nice place to stay!

The Sutton Place Hotel was a great romantic getaway for us on Valentine's week. We had wonderful service and found the hotel both stylish and very homey. It was small but had everything you need. We loved our room, bed and the bathroom was great! Big Bathtub and seperate shower with exceptional water pressure. This hotel thought of all the extra little things that make a stay wonderful! Ice, chocolates on bed and turn down the bed service. A drawer for make up, c.d's for music to keep you relaxed and happy. All and All a great place. We loved Carmine's down the street and the Pancake house full of locals but great place for breakfast. Close to everything but in a neighborhood so you feel a bit like a local instead of just a tourist. We'll be Back!

Wonderful curteous staff.

Jennifer, Minneapolis, MN, 2006-09-04

Restaurants galore. 2 blocks from Michigan Ave. 20 minute walk from Navy Pier.

This hotel was in a great location with where we were able to walk to all the locations we wanted to reach. This rooms were very clean and simple. It was nice there was a dvd player in the room which will help in determining a place to stay in the future should be bring our child. Very large closet which kept our luggage out of site. Just a great overall hotel.

Business Hotel in Artsy Area

Robert, Memphis, TN, 2006-05-10

Gibson's Steakhouse, Italian restaurant, Irish Pub food, and Community Bakery all in two block area.

Pretty cool hotel if you are a business traveler . Fairly large hotel with a quaint "small hotel feel". Not right in the middle, but yet still close enough. Rooms were modern, clean, and comfortable. Bathroom has great deep tubs and very nice powerful showers. The location is great; plenty of restaurants, upscale stores, and nightlife in the two block radius. Highly recommended.

If you're looking for bargains...

Eric, Dayton, OH, 2005-08-18

Go up a few extra blocks to Division and get your drink-on for much cheaper at places like Mothers, Mothers Too, and some place called, like, The Lodge or something. I forget. See? It works...

...this ain't the place for you. But it's enough of a value-add to not sting too badly. The Sutton Place is indicitive of the Gold Coast neighborhood it's in the middle of - every time you step out the door, it's a sixty-dollarectomy. That's just the reality of the situation. But be that as it may, eat- and drink-wise, pick a direction and head in it; you can't go wrong. The Sutton's staff is all aces and there's always a cab at the ready should you temporarily need less swanky surroundings. Here's your metaphor: It actually costs LESS to order room-service beer than it does to buy them in the hotel's bar. In short, if it only had a pool, it'd be pretty unstoppable.
