During your Chicago vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Windy
One of the more breathtaking scenes on the lake is watching this tall ship approach the docks at Navy Pier. The 148-foot-long, four-masted schooner (and its new sister ship, the Windy II) sets sail for 90-minute cruises two to five times a day, both day and evening. Of course, the boats are at the whims of the wind, so every cruise charts a different course. Passengers are welcome to help raise and trim the sails and occasionally take turns at the ship's helm (with the captain standing close by). The boats are not accessible for people with disabilities.
Six Flags Great America
One of the Midwest's biggest theme/amusement parks, Six Flags is located midway between Chicago and Milwaukee on I-94 in Gurnee, Illinois. The park has more than 100 rides and attractions and is a favorite of roller-coaster devotees. There are a whopping 10 of them here, including the nausea-inducing Déjà Vu, where riders fly forwards and backwards over a twisting, looping inverted steel track, and Superman, where you speed along hanging headfirst (with your legs dangling). Other don't-miss rides for the strong of stomach include the Iron Wolf, where you do corkscrew turns and 360-degree loops while standing up, and the American Eagle, a classic wooden coaster. Because this is a place that caters to families, you'll also find plenty to appeal to smaller visitors. The Looney Tunes National Park is full of kiddie rides with a cartoon theme; other worthwhile stops include the double-decker carousel and bumper cars. Six Flags also has live shows, IMAX movies, and restaurants. If you take the trouble to get out here, allow a full day.
Chicago Botanic Garden
Despite its name, the world-class Chicago Botanic Garden is located 25 miles north of the city in the suburb of Glencoe. This 385-acre living preserve includes eight large lagoons and a variety of distinct botanical environments -- from the Illinois prairie to an English walled garden to a three-island Japanese garden. Also on the grounds are a large fruit and vegetable garden, an "enabling garden" (which shows how gardening can be adapted for people with disabilities), and a 100-acre old-growth oak woodland. If you're here in the summer, don't miss the extensive rose gardens (just follow the bridal parties who flock here to get their pictures taken). The Botanic Garden also has an exhibit hall, an auditorium, a museum, a library, education greenhouses, an outdoor pavilion, a carillon, a cafe, a designated bike path, and a garden shop. Carillon concerts take place at 7pm Monday evenings from late June through August, with a preliminary hour-long tour.Every summer, the Botanic Garden stages a special outdoor exhibition (one year giant animal-shaped topiaries were placed in unexpected locations throughout the grounds; another year, model railroads wound through miniature versions of American national parks). Check the website or call for event schedules.Allow 3 hours.

Offbeat hotel alternative - interesting, comfortable

Daniel, 2006-05-08

The Fisher Building offers accomodations in apartment units rather than hotel rooms. Mine was a 1 bedroom with kitchen and living area. The accomdation was clean and certainly offered more room than any hotel at anything like a comparable price. The bed was good. The kitchen was adequately well equipped - although my stay was brief so I can't say if things other than the fridge worked. Plenty of water flow in the shower (much more than water-saver-widget infested hotels tend to offer today). Air conditioning was not turned on yet for the season in the building, and the unit tended to be overly warm unless you opened windows. The problem with that being that the El runs very close by and makes lots of noise. The only other knock on the place is that there's no there there. This is not a hotel so there are no lobby facilities, no sense of community or place (however transitory). Also, the location may not be ideal unless you're either spending days at the Chicago Public Library (around corner) or in the financial district (also very close). Other hotels, restaurants, etc. that you'd normally associate with Chicago are not nearby. You'll either have to use the mass transit or walk quite a ways to get to civilization.

Pluses and minuses.

Ann, Charlottesville, VA, 2005-11-13

The Fischer Building is an old office building which has been remodeled into apts. The apartment we stayed in was modern and clean and nicely decorated. Galley kitchen had glasses, dishes and cookware and coffee maker as well as expected appliances. The lobby and check-in procedure is rather creepy - the sole employee present had been instructed to get a lot of unnecessary financial info, but didn't insist when I refused to provide it. The building's location could be rather daunting to some - it's in the business district around the Federal Building, so after dark there's almost no one on the streets except street people and some traffic. This also means that the nearest places to eat, get coffee, etc. are closed after business hours and weekends, and altho a 7-11 is on the ground floor, the grocery scene is pretty bleak. It is convenient to the Art Institute and Field Museum though, and even though the nearby shopping is decidely low end, it's just a health walk to the glorious of Michigan Avenue.

Apartment Hotel in Downtown Chicago

Lawrence, Los Angeles, CA, 2005-06-09

The Fisher Building in downtown Chicago is an "apartment-hotel" building that offers rental arrangements from a day or two to long-term stay. I stayed for three nights, and enjoyed the stay. Although it does not offer the usual hotel amenities (restaurant, room service, house-keeping), there is a well-stocked 7-11 on the ground floor and good restaurants nearby. I was in Chicago on business and really appreciated the central location: a few blocks from Michigan Avenue, and only a few blocks south of the center of own. The only problem was that nobody was in the "lobby" when I arrived, and I almost left, thinking there had been a huge mistake.
