During your Chicago vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Lincoln Park Zoo
This is one of Chicago's don't-miss attractions (especially if the weather is decent), and because it's free, it's worth at least a quick stop during a stroll through Lincoln Park. But you'll probably want to wander for a while. The term "zoological gardens" truly fits here: Landmark Georgian Revival brick buildings and modern structures sit among gently rolling pathways, verdant lawns, and a kaleidoscopic profusion of flower gardens. A complete tour of the various habitats takes all of 2 or 3 hours -- a convenience factor even more enticing when you consider that the nation's oldest zoo (it was founded in 1868) stays open 365 days a year and is one of the last free zoos in the country. The late Marlon Perkins, legendary host of the Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom TV series, got his start here as the zoo's director, and filmed a pioneering TV show called Zoo Parade (Wild Kingdom's predecessor) in the basement of the old Reptile House. The zoo has taken on an ambitious modernization campaign, which is good news for animal lovers. While many zoo residents used to wander listlessly in stark concrete pens, exhibits have been renovated and expanded to reflect natural habitats. For years, the zoo's star attraction has been the Great Ape House, which was completely rebuilt in 2004. Lincoln Park Zoo has had remarkable success breeding gorillas and chimpanzees, and watching these ape families interact can be mesmerizing (and touching). Regenstein African Journey is home to elephants, giraffes, rhinos, and other large mammals; large glass-enclosed tanks allow visitors to go face-to-face with swimming pygmy hippos and (not for the faint of heart) a rocky ledge filled with Madagascar hissing cockroaches. The Small Mammal-Reptile House is a state-of-the-art facility, housing 200 species and featuring a glass-enclosed walk-through ecosystem simulating river, savanna, and forest habitats. The popular Sea Lion Pool, situated in the center of the zoo and home to harbor seals, gray seals, and California sea lions, features an underwater viewing area spanning 70 feet and an updated amphitheater. If you're here for a while and need nourishment, the Park Place Café food court is a good option. The Mahon Theobold Pavilion features a sprawling indoor gift shop and a unique rooftop eatery called Big Cats Café that opens at 8am (1 hr. before the exhibits do) and serves fresh-baked muffins and scones, focaccia sandwiches, salads, and flatbreads.Allow 2 to 3 hours.
Chicago Children's Museum
Since the Chicago Children's Museum moved to Navy Pier in 1996, it has become one of the most popular cultural attractions in the city. The museum has areas especially for preschoolers as well as for children up to age 10, and several permanent exhibits allow kids a maximum of hands-on fun. Dinosaur Expedition re-creates an expedition to the Sahara, allowing kids to experience camp life, conduct scientific research, and dig for the bones of Suchomimus, a Saharan dinosaur discovered by Chicago paleontologist Paul Sereno (a full-scale model stands nearby). Face to Face: Dealing with Prejudice and Discrimination is a multimedia display that helps kids identify prejudice and find ways to deal with it. There's also a three-level schooner that children can board for a little climbing, from the crow's nest to the gangplank; PlayMaze, a toddler-scale cityscape with everything from a gas station to a city bus that children under 5 can touch and explore; and an arts-and-crafts area where visitors can create original artwork to take home. Allow 2 to 3 hours.
Spertus Museum
The Spertus Museum, an extension of the Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies, showcases intricately crafted and historic Jewish ceremonial objects, textiles, coins, paintings, and sculpture, tracing 5,000 years of Jewish heritage. Though small in scale, the Zell Holocaust Memorial exhibit is particularly moving, featuring a video montage of Holocaust victims with a Chicago connection and a display of related artifacts and documents. The kid-oriented Artifact Center is a re-creation of a Middle Eastern archaeological dig, where children can search for buried treasures (reserved for school groups in the mornings, it's open to the public in the afternoon). The institute's Asher Library boasts one of the largest collections of Jewish books, periodicals, videos, and music in the country. The Bariff Shop for Judaica carries a large selection of art, books, music, videos, and contemporary and traditional Jewish ceremonial gifts. Allow 1 hour.

My review of Ramada Plaza Chicago O'Hare

The room was small enough to give a "fenced In" feeling. We asked for but did not receive wash cloths in the bathroom. The staff was friendly, the location good, the resturaunt was o.k. with very nice surroundings. Parking was good.

Good value for price

Buy the day pass for $5 and you can use the train and downtown busses which run often enough to get around town.

Hotel is close to the Blue Line train and nearby shopping for little things. Had enclosed parking which was nice.

Hotel remarks

Michiko, Denver, CO, 2006-05-11

The receceptionist was somewhat aloof and was not sensitive to our needs . The room was adequate...We just had gotten in to Ohare from an all day trip from Malta...Twenty hours since we left Malta. Our previous experiences we had with the Ramada were accomodated for circumstance as ours.

Distance from city

Anonymous, Providence, RI, 2006-03-12

Buy a CTA pass for the amount of days that you will be taking public transportation. And have cab fare on hand.

The Ramada was comfortable, the room was clean and the staff was freindly. We did have to wait a few minute for our room once we got there. If you don't mind long train rides into the city and quite a walk to the train station from the hotel then stay here, if you want to be close to downtown this is not the hotel for you.

Ideal location

Anonymous, 2006-03-12

Take the train downtown and to get around, it is cheap ($5 a day for an all day pass, and they have multi-day passes too) and you don't have to spend hrs in traffic.

The Ramada Plaza O'Haire provided the ideal location for access to both the Downtown Chicago area and the Chicago O'Haire airport as well. I especially liked the fact that the train station was right across the street and provided a convenient, affordable and easy mode of transportation not only to the airport, but to downtown as well. The hotel staff was very courteous in recomending restaurants and entertainment downtown, as well as instructions on how to get there off the train lines. The hotel room, while small, was always clean and was a great place to relax and catch up on rest.
