During your Chicago vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Unity Temple
After fire destroyed its church around 1900, a Unitarian/Universalist congregation asked one of its members, Frank Lloyd Wright, to design an affordable replacement. Using poured concrete with metal reinforcements -- a necessity, owing to the small budget of $40,000 allocated for the project -- Wright created a building that on the outside seems as forbidding as a mausoleum but inside contains all the elements of the Prairie School that has made Wright's name immortal. Following the example of H. H. Richardson, Wright placed the building's main entrance on the side, behind an enclosure -- a feature often employed in his houses as well -- to create a sense of privacy and intimacy. Wright complained, furthermore, that the conventions of church architecture -- such as the nave in the Gothic-style cathedral across the street -- were overpowering. Of that particular church, he commented that he didn't feel a part of it.Yet his own vision in this regard was somewhat confused and contradictory. He wanted Unity Temple to be "democratic." But perhaps Wright was unable to subdue his own personal hubris and hauteur in the creative process, for the ultimate effect of his chapel, and much of the building's interior, is very grand and imperial. This is no simple meetinghouse; instead, its principal chapel looks like the chamber of the Roman Senate. Even so, the interior, with its unpredictable geometric arrangements and its decor reminiscent of Native American art, is no less beautiful.Wright was a true hands-on, can-do person; he knew the materials he chose to use as intimately as the artisans who carried out his plans. He added pigment to the plaster (rather than the paint) to achieve a pale, natural effect. His use of wood for trim and other decorative touches is still exciting to behold; his sensitivity to grain and tone and placement was akin to that of an exceptionally gifted woodworker. And his stunning, almost-minimalist use of form is what still sets him apart as a relevant and brilliant artist. Unity Temple still feels groundbreaking 100 years later -- which Wright might consider the ultimate compliment. Allow a half-hour.
Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum
The building may be historic, but some of the attractions here will captivate the most jaded video-game addict. The first planetarium in the Western Hemisphere, it was founded by Sears, Roebuck and Co. executive Max Adler, who imported a Zeiss projector from Germany in 1930.The good news for present-day visitors is that the planetarium has been updated since then. Your first stop should be the modern Sky Pavilion, where the don't-miss experience is the StarRider Theater. Settle down under the massive dome, and you'll take a half-hour long interactive virtual-reality trip through the Milky Way and into deep space, featuring a computer-generated 3D-graphics projection system and controls in the armrest of each person's seat. Six high-resolution video projectors form a seamless image above your head -- you'll feel like you're literally floating in space. (On Thurs, Fri, and Sat nights, the theater is open late for SonicVision, a head-trippy digital animation show with an alternative music soundtrack.) If you're looking for more entertainment, the Sky Theater shows movies with an astronomical bent. Recent shows have included Secrets of Saturn and Mars Now!, both of which are updated as new discoveries are made. The planetarium's exhibit galleries feature a variety of displays and interactive activities designed to foster understanding of our solar system and more. The best current exhibit is Bringing the Heavens to Earth, which traces the ways different cultures have tried to make sense of astronomical phenomena. The planetarium's signature exhibit, From the Night Sky to the Big Bang, traces changing views of the cosmos over 1,000 years and features artifacts from the planetarium's extensive collection of historical astronomical instruments (all of which can get a bit boring for kids unless they're real astronomy nuts). The museum's cafe provides views of the lakefront and skyline. On the first Friday evening of the month, visitors can view dramatic close-ups of the moon, the planets, and distant galaxies through a closed-circuit monitor connected to the planetarium's Doane Observatory telescope.Allow 2 hours, more if you want to see more than one show.
Shoreline Sightseeing
Shoreline schedules 30-minute lake cruises every half-hour from its three dock locations: the Shedd Aquarium, Navy Pier, and Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park. Shoreline has also gotten in on the popularity of architecture tours by offering its own version, narrated by an architectural guide (with higher prices than their regular tours). A water taxi also runs every half-hour from Navy Pier to both the Sears Tower and the Shedd Aquarium. One-way tickets for the water taxi are $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, and $3 for children under 12; all-day passes cost $12 for adults and $6 for children.

Close to Soldier Field

Ben, Los Angeles, CA

The Hyatt was very close to my destination, Soldier Field. I was able to walk to the game with the other fans. My only gripe was staying on the same floor as the gym and pool. I could hear all the kids up and down the floor in my room.

Boat Show Convenience

Brent

We had a great time with the boat show and the convenience of the Hyatt to McCormick Place. The hotel was working on remodeling the restaurant and bar area. We look forward to going back next year to see the improvements.

My review of Hyatt Regency McCormick Place-Chicago

Anonymous, 2007-03-12

If you intend to make trade show in the MacComack Place, then it gives you the convinience for access the show ground within 2 minute walk.

For the price I paid for the room with the available amennities, I will say it is way over priced.

VERY CONVENIENT

Pamela, Chicago, IL, 2006-09-01

A VERY SHORT CAB DRIVE TO DOWNTOWN, NAVY PIER AND GRANT PARK.

THE HOTEL IS VERY CLOSE TO TOWN BUT FAR ENOUGH OUT OF TOWN TO AVOID THE CROWD AND THE ACCESS IS GREAT. CABS ARE ALWAYS READILY AVAILABLE. THE VALET & BELL STAFF ARE ALWAYS GREAT! I WISH THE PRICING WAS MORE CONSISTANT. OVERALL A GREAT PLACE TO STAY. MY FAVORITE IN CHICAGO!

very nice

richard, Flint, MI, 2006-08-27

The hotel had a free shuttle to take you to the nearby Museum Campus, Navy Pier, Soldier field, etc... but you were on your own for the return trip. A minor inconvenience, but I feel worth noting.

The hotel staff was very helpful and friendly. They had smiles on their faces, and you could tell they enjoyed what they did. Our room was well appointed, clean, and comfortable. The hotel participates in a eco-friendly policy of only changing linens every 3 days, which you can request everyday changings at no extra charge. Every little bit helps in energy and water conservation, and I think this policy is a great idea. The only minor blip was the dining, which was a little expensive in the hotel, and there wer no convenient alternatives within walking distance. Other than that, I would recommend this hotel to anyone, as our stay was first class all the way.

Great Vacation

Janice, Jackson, MS, 2006-08-06

Although the Hyatt McCormick isn't in the loop, it's well worth checking out. The staff is helpful and friendly; the coffee shop, lounge and restaurant are great, and everything within the hotel is easy to get to. The in-room information booklets about the hotel leave much to be desired so go exploring on your own - it won't take long. McCormick Place is really developing. In 5 years it will be Chicago's new hot spot (Chinatown is right next door). We didn't take the kiddos this trip but I certainly would next time we go. We found a great Carribbean Fusion restaurant in walking distance that the concierge knew nothing about.
