Hotel Allegro - a Kimpton Hotel

171 W. Randolph St. , Chicago, IL 60601
The captivating Hotel Allegro Chicago was designed by award winning designer, Cheryl Rowley. This historic hotel was built in the 1920's with an art deco interior design, and Ms. Rowley transformed the hotel into a 90's version of what's hip and lively today. The Allegro stimulates the senses with a vibrant range of colors, rich textured fabrics, bold patterns, and a contrasting blend of classic and contemporary designs.

With the celebrity red-carpet treatment from the headset-wearing doormen to the chic "Living Room" lobby, the Allegro inspires guests to Be A Star. The "Living Room" plush velvet and velour furniture set the stage for the Hosted Evening Wine Reception and the morning's coffee bar, which serves Italian roast coffee, espresso and delicious baked goodies. Other amenities include valet laundry, complimentary overnight shoeshine, 24-hour business and fitness center, room service, valet parking, and a full-service concierge. The pet-friendly hotel welcomes pets with a treat plus food and water dishes to use during their stay. Walking services are also available.

Oversized, upholstered headboards accent art-deco furnishings and designer fabrics of the 483 guest rooms. Guests can indulge with in-room spa services provided by Relax and Rejuvinate. Plush robes and Aveda bath products are standard amenities, along with a complimentary yoga accessory basket, A/C, coffee/tea maker, Sony CD stereo, 2-line phone with voicemail, evening turndown (upon request), hairdryer, hair salon, minibar, morning paper, complimentary DSL Wi-Fi Internet and cable TV. The Hotel Allegro also features Kimpton's Forgot It, We've Got It program, where toiletry items that you may have left at home are complimentary provided for a carefree vacation.

Down and hypo-allergenic pillows are also available.

Popular with Chicagoans and guests, 312 Chicago offers Old World Italian dining touched with a contemporary flair. 312 Chicago's inviting dining room with rich wood paneling complements a business meal, dinner before a show or just a relaxing evening out.

The Allegro is located in the heart of the financial loop and Theater District, across from City Hall and the State of Illinois building - three blocks from the State Street Shopping and minutes by cab from the Magnificent Mile, Grant Park, The Art Institute, Millennium Park, Navy Pier, McCormick Place and the United Center. Ideal for business travelers, vacations, and getaways.

During your Chicago vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
John G. Shedd Aquarium
The Shedd is a city treasure and well deserving of its title as world's largest indoor aquarium. A mix of standard aquarium tanks and elaborate new habitats, this marble octagon building is filled with thousands of denizens of river, lake, and sea. The only problem with the Shedd is its steep admission price. You can keep your costs down by buying the "Aquarium Only" admission, but then you'll be missing some of the most stunning exhibits. The first thing you'll see as you enter is the Caribbean Coral Reef. This 90,000-gallon circular tank occupies the Beaux Arts-style central rotunda, entertaining spectators who press up against the glass to ogle divers feeding nurse sharks, barracudas, stingrays, and a hawksbill sea turtle. New technology includes an enhanced sound system and a roving camera connected to video monitors mounted on the tank's periphery, which gives visitors close-ups of the animals inside. It's worth sticking around to catch one of the daily feedings, when a diver swims around the tank and (thanks to a microphone) talks about the species and their eating habits. The exhibits surrounding the Caribbean coral reef re-create different marine habitats around the world. The best is Amazon Rising: Seasons of the River, a re-creation of the Amazon basin that showcases far more than fish (although you'll get to see some sharp-toothed piranhas as well). You'll pay extra to see the other Shedd highlights, but they're quite impressive, so I'd suggest shelling out for at least one. The Oceanarium , with a wall of windows revealing the lake outside, re-creates a Pacific Northwest coastal environment and creates the illusion of one uninterrupted expanse of sea. On a fixed performance schedule in a large pool flanked by an amphitheater, a crew of friendly trainers puts dolphins through their paces of leaping dives, breaches, and tail walking. Check out the Oceanarium schedule as soon as you get to the Shedd; seating space fills up quickly for the shows, so you'll want to get there early. If you're visiting during a summer weekend, you may also want to buy your Oceanarium ticket in advance to make sure you can catch a show that day. The newest signature exhibit is Wild Reef -- Sharks at Shedd , a series of 26 interconnected habitats that house a Philippine coral reef patrolled by sharks and other predators. The floor-to-ceiling windows bring those toothy swimmers up close and personal (they even swim over your head at certain spots). If you want a quality sit-down meal in a restaurant with a spectacular view of Lake Michigan, check out Soundings, right there inside the aquarium. There's also a family-friendly cafeteria. Allow 2 to 3 hours.
Shoreline Sightseeing
Shoreline schedules 30-minute lake cruises every half-hour from its three dock locations: the Shedd Aquarium, Navy Pier, and Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park. Shoreline has also gotten in on the popularity of architecture tours by offering its own version, narrated by an architectural guide (with higher prices than their regular tours). A water taxi also runs every half-hour from Navy Pier to both the Sears Tower and the Shedd Aquarium. One-way tickets for the water taxi are $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, and $3 for children under 12; all-day passes cost $12 for adults and $6 for children.
Spertus Museum
The Spertus Museum, an extension of the Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies, showcases intricately crafted and historic Jewish ceremonial objects, textiles, coins, paintings, and sculpture, tracing 5,000 years of Jewish heritage. Though small in scale, the Zell Holocaust Memorial exhibit is particularly moving, featuring a video montage of Holocaust victims with a Chicago connection and a display of related artifacts and documents. The kid-oriented Artifact Center is a re-creation of a Middle Eastern archaeological dig, where children can search for buried treasures (reserved for school groups in the mornings, it's open to the public in the afternoon). The institute's Asher Library boasts one of the largest collections of Jewish books, periodicals, videos, and music in the country. The Bariff Shop for Judaica carries a large selection of art, books, music, videos, and contemporary and traditional Jewish ceremonial gifts. Allow 1 hour.

Old World Beauty

Anonymous, Providence, RI

Want a show? ant easy access to the Park? Want o be close to the business area? The Allegro is the place to be. You could saty on the Miracle Mile but you would only close to the shopping and miss everything else.

The Allegro is an old hotel that has retained its charm while upgrading its infrustructure. They have decroated the rooms with bedding that actually makes it 'cool' and unlike all the other chain hotels. The staff is always friendly and their desk staff recommended a resteurant, made a reservation for me, and when I arrived I was treated to the best table in an extrodianary resteurant. It is always a pleasure to stay there.

The Royal Treatment

Anonymous, Chicago, IL, 2005-12-31

The hotel is very close to the Oriental/Ford theater completely within walking distance. This makes this hotel a great place to stay when attending any of the theater's current attractions. Shopping as well as dining is also very close.

From the moment we drove our car up to the hotel entrance, we felt that we were taken care of in every respect. The staff is extremely courteous, friendly and helpful. From the valet service to the person behind the reception desk to the conceriege, we could not have asked for better treatment. The hotel's decor is different and 'fun' - a refreshing escape!

Close to perfect

Restaurants, Theaters, Michigan Ave.

The Hotel Allegro is in the heart of The Loop. It can't be beat for convenience, and the price is right -- especially compared to the competition. The rooms are a little small, but they're well-appointed and clean. I'd recommend it highly.

Theatre Friendly

Be sure and take in the Millenium Park a few blocks away!

The Hotel Allegro is a great place to stay if you are in town for the theatre - or for shopping - or various cultural events. It's a quick walk to several of the theatres - to other venues - to Marshall Fields! The staff is very friendly and helpful - room service is wonderful. The rooms are very comfortable and the beds are so comfy!

Fun stylish hotel

Anonymous, New York, NY, 2005-09-26

All the best shopping in downtown Chicago is only a few blocks away, including the huge and fabulous Marshall Fields and Carson Pirie Scott. Also nearby: theaters, fascinating architecture of downtown Chicago and the wonderful new Millenium Park.

The Allegro is a smallish boutique hotel with stylish design and a brilliant location in the Loop. The free wireless Internet access in rooms is an outstanding service. Staff was very attentive and helpful. My only complaints (and these are minor quibbles) was that my room looked out a dark brick wall and the fitness center was very small with few pieces of equipment. Nonetheless, I would certainly stay again. I'd just ask for a view this time!

A neat place to stay

Michelle, Lansing, MI, 2005-09-04

We took thte free trolley to the meuseums because they were a small distance for us to walk.

This was my daughters first vacation, it worked out perfect! The room was cozy and clean and the decorations were great! I would definatly stay there or recommend this place to a friend. We walked to the Sears tower, and the Lion King was playing right next door to us in the theatre. We had a great time!
