During your Chicago vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Chicago from the Lake
This company runs two different cruises: a 90-minute tour of architecture along the Chicago River, and historical cruises that travel on the lake and river to explore the development of the city. Complimentary coffee (Starbucks, no less), lemonade, cookies, and muffins are served. For tickets, call or stop by the company's ticket office, located on the lower level on the east end of River East Plaza. Advance reservations are recommended.
Lincoln Park Pritzker Children's Zoo & Farm-in-the-Zoo
After hours of looking at animals from afar in the rest of the Lincoln Park Zoo, kids can come here for some hands-on experience. Children are encouraged to come touch a variety of small animals -- hedgehogs, iguanas, rabbits -- under the supervision of zookeepers. There's also a very popular glass-walled animal nursery, where zoo docents and keepers care for the babies of more exotic species -- often, this means gorillas and chimpanzees -- who are ill, born weak, or rejected by their mothers. An adjacent outdoor area houses owls, otters, and other small critters in winding, naturalistic habitats. The Farm-in-the-Zoo is a working reproduction of a Midwestern farm, complete with a white-picket-fenced barnyard, chicken coops, and demonstrations of butter churning and weaving. Of course, you'll also spot plenty of livestock, including cows, sheep, and pigs. Inside the Main Barn (filled with interactive exhibits), the main attraction is the huge John Deere tractor that kids can climb up into and pretend to drive. (Can you say photo opportunity?) Allow 1 hour.
Unity Temple
After fire destroyed its church around 1900, a Unitarian/Universalist congregation asked one of its members, Frank Lloyd Wright, to design an affordable replacement. Using poured concrete with metal reinforcements -- a necessity, owing to the small budget of $40,000 allocated for the project -- Wright created a building that on the outside seems as forbidding as a mausoleum but inside contains all the elements of the Prairie School that has made Wright's name immortal. Following the example of H. H. Richardson, Wright placed the building's main entrance on the side, behind an enclosure -- a feature often employed in his houses as well -- to create a sense of privacy and intimacy. Wright complained, furthermore, that the conventions of church architecture -- such as the nave in the Gothic-style cathedral across the street -- were overpowering. Of that particular church, he commented that he didn't feel a part of it.Yet his own vision in this regard was somewhat confused and contradictory. He wanted Unity Temple to be "democratic." But perhaps Wright was unable to subdue his own personal hubris and hauteur in the creative process, for the ultimate effect of his chapel, and much of the building's interior, is very grand and imperial. This is no simple meetinghouse; instead, its principal chapel looks like the chamber of the Roman Senate. Even so, the interior, with its unpredictable geometric arrangements and its decor reminiscent of Native American art, is no less beautiful.Wright was a true hands-on, can-do person; he knew the materials he chose to use as intimately as the artisans who carried out his plans. He added pigment to the plaster (rather than the paint) to achieve a pale, natural effect. His use of wood for trim and other decorative touches is still exciting to behold; his sensitivity to grain and tone and placement was akin to that of an exceptionally gifted woodworker. And his stunning, almost-minimalist use of form is what still sets him apart as a relevant and brilliant artist. Unity Temple still feels groundbreaking 100 years later -- which Wright might consider the ultimate compliment. Allow a half-hour.

Extremely Disappointed

Joshua, Columbus, OH, 2007-03-12

Check out Mario Tricoci Spa. It was the highlight of our trip!

I have stayed at Hotel 71 before and was disappointed this time around. Our room was not cleaned, our toiletries not updated and the staff in general was not helpful. I loved the location, but there are plenty of other places to stay.

Very accommodating staff

David, Cleveland, OH, 2007-03-11

The hallways and rooms were clean and nice, the elevators were fast (I was on 35 and it was always a quick trip), and the staff was quick to accommodate. The rooms were supposed to have wireless Internet access, but after finding that the wireless wasn't working in my area, an engineer went around the building with me to find a region that worked and then had the front desk change my room to the new location. I was grateful - and impressed. The location is terrific - right on the river - with several local restaurants and convenience shops nearby.

Urban Comfy

Lee, Nashville, TN, 2007-03-04

4 blocks from Oriental Theater (Wicked) and 2 blocks from Smith & Wollensky's (fabulous steak dinner). Corner Bakery next door offers wonderful breakfast.

I loved my stay at Hotel 71 in Chicago. Rooms were spacious, with a lovely view of the river. Big tv, good cd player, refrig big enough for six bottles of champagne. The bar downstairs is a real hot spot. Front desk staff, while friendly, seemed slightly disorganized, but housekeeping is beyond reproach. Even before the renovation is completed, this is a highly recommended destination.

71 is right in the middle of all the fun without the big price tag.

Jeremy, 2007-02-18

everything is right there...just walk out the door and hit Michigan Ave!

except for the renovations they're doing....the hotel was in top shape. the staff there is A++ and the location is one of my favorites. it's close enough to Michigan Ave that you can walk anywhere....but far enough away to keep the prices comfortable. can't wait to see what the place looks like after the renovations!!!!!
