During your Chicago vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Arlington International Racecourse
With its gleaming-white, palatial, six-story grandstand and lush gardens, this racecourse is one of the most beautiful showcases for thoroughbred horse racing in the world. It has a storied history stretching back to 1927, and its track has been graced by such equine stars as Citation, Secretariat, and Cigar. The track's annual Arlington Million (the sport's first million-dollar race, held in mid-Aug) has attracted the top jockeys, trainers, and horses in past years and recently became part of the new World Series Racing Championship, which includes the Breeders Cup races. Arlington's race days are thrilling to behold, with all of racing's time-honored pageantry on display -- from the bugler in traditional dress to the parade of jockeys.Arlington likes to say that it caters to families, and it must be said that the ambience here is more Disney than den of iniquity. Various "family days" throughout the summer include live music and entertainment ranging from petting zoos to puppet shows.
Cafe Brauer
This landmark 1900 building, a fine example of Chicago's Prairie School of architecture, is not technically open to the public, except for a cafe and ice-cream parlor on the ground floor. But the Great Hall on the second floor, flanked by two curving loggias, is one of the city's most popular wedding-reception spots, so if you stop by on a weekend, chances are you can sneak a peek while the caterers are setting up. Even if you don't make it inside, Cafe Brauer makes a nice stopping-off point during a walk around the park. Sit and sip a coffee, or rent a paddleboat at the edge of the lovely South Pond ($10 per half-hour). Best of all, though, is the picture-postcard view from the adjacent bridge spanning the pond of the John Hancock Center and neighboring skyscrapers beyond Lincoln Park's treetops. Allow a quarter-hour, longer for a paddleboat ride.
Lincoln Park Pritzker Children's Zoo & Farm-in-the-Zoo
After hours of looking at animals from afar in the rest of the Lincoln Park Zoo, kids can come here for some hands-on experience. Children are encouraged to come touch a variety of small animals -- hedgehogs, iguanas, rabbits -- under the supervision of zookeepers. There's also a very popular glass-walled animal nursery, where zoo docents and keepers care for the babies of more exotic species -- often, this means gorillas and chimpanzees -- who are ill, born weak, or rejected by their mothers. An adjacent outdoor area houses owls, otters, and other small critters in winding, naturalistic habitats. The Farm-in-the-Zoo is a working reproduction of a Midwestern farm, complete with a white-picket-fenced barnyard, chicken coops, and demonstrations of butter churning and weaving. Of course, you'll also spot plenty of livestock, including cows, sheep, and pigs. Inside the Main Barn (filled with interactive exhibits), the main attraction is the huge John Deere tractor that kids can climb up into and pretend to drive. (Can you say photo opportunity?) Allow 1 hour.

Very Enjoyable Stay

Nancy, 2007-03-11

Plenty of shopping and dining within a short walk. Gino's pizza was next door and Northwestern Hospital was only a block away.

The Affinia Hotel is a very old hotel going through a major renovation but it didn't have any impact on our room on the 27th floor. It was very quaint and I loved the two steps down to the bed. Great view of the magnificent mile. Didn't appreciate the $40 valet parking fee - the cars were parked near the construction zone so we parked in the public parking garage acress the street for $36 per 24 hours.

Friendly Hotel

Dean, Little Rock, AR, 2007-03-11

Although the hotel could use a number of renovations to be more comfortable, the friendliness, helpfulness, and professionalism of the staff more than make up for these shortcomings.

Great Staff and Great Location!

Brittany, 2007-03-11

We had a great time this weekend! The staff did a wonderful job of taking care of us and making us feel completely welcome. I would recommend this hotel to any of my friends. It was only a block from Michagan Ave. and was in perfect walking distance to restaraunts and shopping. The bedroom had a very nice setup and the beds were really comfortable! I can't wait to go back to this hotel.

convenient, close to most attractions

the famous pizza place is right next to the hotel

The Affinia Chicago Hotel was located very close to all the downtown attractions. The room was clean and nice. The one thing that disappointed me was that there were three of us staying in one room, we had to phone the front desk every day to ask for an extra set of towels. In addition, housekeeping did not do a good job in giving shampoo and coffee each day.

Excellent value

Anonymous, 2007-03-04

We walked over to Blues Chicago from the hotel, just a few blocks away. We also were within a short walking distance of Timothy O'Tooles, a fun place for darts, pool and drinks.

I was very impressed with everything about the Affinia. I was shocked at how nice and spacious the room was, given the low price. I will definitely stay here again. The bed was so plush and comfortable. It was so quiet I felt like we were the only people in the hotel. The staff were extremely friendly and made me feel very welcome. This is a wonderful hotel; I will recommend it to everybody.

Great Location

Anonymous, Indianapolis, IN, 2007-02-22

We spent one day shopping on the North side of the hotel and one day shopping on the South side. It was easy to get to many shopping locations. Coco Pazzi was a great Italian resteraunt within walking distance.

The Affinia was a fabulous for a Girls Shopping Trip. It was dead center of the Magnificent Mile. We had an easy time walking to attractions, resteraunts and shopping. The room was very clean and we had great service. The hotel was undergoing renovations so we were not able to use the fitness equipment. Definitely not a deal breaker. The price was great!

Everything was a short distance away. Very good location.

We had never been to Chicago and we were very pleased with the location of this hotel and the kind staff. We will stay there again.

great location, staff helpful and polite

William, Birmingham, AL, 2007-02-19

Had a great Chicago style pizza less than two blocks away.

This was a father son trip to Chicago, my son's first trip. The staff put us in a room w/ a great view of Lake Michigan and the Hancock Tower. We were half a block from Michigan Ave. The CTA station was a couple of blocks away. The room exceeded our expectations.
