During your Chicago vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Museum of Contemporary Photography
Ensconced in a ground-floor space at Columbia College -- a progressive arts- and media-oriented institution that boasts the country's largest undergraduate film department and a highly respected photojournalism-slanted photography department -- the Museum of Contemporary Photography is the only museum in the Midwest of its ilk. As the name indicates, it exhibits, collects, and promotes modern photography, with a special focus on American works from 1959 to present. Rotating exhibitions showcase images by both nationally recognized and "undiscovered" regional artists. Related lectures and special programs are scheduled during the year. Allow 1 hour.
Chicago from the Lake
This company runs two different cruises: a 90-minute tour of architecture along the Chicago River, and historical cruises that travel on the lake and river to explore the development of the city. Complimentary coffee (Starbucks, no less), lemonade, cookies, and muffins are served. For tickets, call or stop by the company's ticket office, located on the lower level on the east end of River East Plaza. Advance reservations are recommended.
Sears Tower Skydeck
First Sears sold the building and moved to cheaper suburban offices in 1992. Then the skyscraper got an ego blow when the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, went up and laid claim to the title of world's tallest buildings. (The Sears Tower has since put up a 22-ft. antenna in an attempt to win back the title.) Tallest-building posturing aside, this is still a great place to orient yourself to the city, but I wouldn't put it on the top of must-see sights for anyone with limited time (and limited patience for crowds). The view from the 103rd-floor Skydeck is everything you'd expect it to be -- once you get there. Unfortunately, you're often stuck in a very long, very noisy line, so by the time you make it to the top, your patience could be as thin as the atmosphere up there. (Come in the late afternoon to avoid most of the crowds.) On a clear day, visibility extends up to 50 miles, and you can catch glimpses of four surrounding states. Despite the fact that it's called a "skydeck," you can't actually walk outside. Recent upgrades include multimedia exhibits on Chicago history and Knee High Chicago, an exhibit for kids. The 70-second high-speed elevator trip will feel like a thrill ride for some, but it's a nightmare for anyone with even mild claustrophobia. Allow 1 to 2 hours, depending on the length of the line.

Style and elegance abound at the Wheeler Mansion Bed and Breakfast. Just a walk to McCormick Place Convention Center. All of the modern conveniences of a contemporary Hotel in a very special setting. Be inspired by its beauty, pampered by its comforts, and amazed by its elegance. Free parking

The hotel was clean but rather worn out. The room was small. They were replacing badly worn carpets in other rooms and it was loud, also our bathroom got flooded when the upstairs bathtub overflowed and while they solved the plumbing issue they did not immediately clean up the bathroom for us. The hotel's major amenity was free parking in downtown Chicago, so if I were in Chicago with a car I might stay there again, but otherwise I think I'd spend a few more bucks a night to stay a bit closer to Michigan Avenue.

Great location and value hotel

Anonymous, Indianapolis, IN, 2005-09-26

The free trolley or city bus is very convenient to use.

The Best Western River North is a very comfortable hotel and a great location to all the attractions in downtown Chicago. The free parking was a definite plus. The room was nice and roomy and I particularly liked that the bathroom and shower was separate from the sink which made it easier for us to get ready in the morning. The hotel checkin was delayed a bit but they readily compensated us with free breakfast coupons. We would definitely stay there again.

the magnificient mile is just 2 or 3 blocks from the hotel. Navy pier is so close (4 dollars by CAB)

The location was more important than anything else for me. This was my first visit to chicago and the location was just perfect. Bus stations as well as the train station was pretty close. All the major tourist attractions were within a 2 mile radius making it easy for travel. The room was comfortable the TV had all the good channels. There are a lot of restaurants around the hotel making it a great place to stay.

Lots of attractions within walking distance. Hard Rock Cafe, Rain Forest Cafe, Mag Mile for shopping, Hancock Building, etc. Short ten minute drive to the Museum campus.

Convenient location within walking distance of the Mag Mile and Hancock Building. Free parking is substantial savings vs other hotels in the area. Modest setting and accomodations, but overall a good value.

The Best Western River North is a great place to stay if you are looking for a great location and don't need a lot frills. The staff is helpful and check in was a snap. It has on site parking included which is a plus in Chicago. Clean room with nice pool and work out room. When we are coming in town for a few days, we stay here! Check it out.
