During your Chicago vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Mystic Blue Cruises
A more casual alternative to fancy dinner cruises, this is promoted as more of a "fun" ship (that means DJs at night, although you'll have to put up with some kind of "live entertainment" no matter when you sail). Daily lunch and dinner excursions are available, as well as midnight voyages on weekends. The same company offers more formal (and expensive) cruises aboard the Odyssey, and motorboat rides on the 70-passenger Seadog, if you really want to feel the water in your face.
Museum of Contemporary Art
The MCA claims to be the largest contemporary art museum in the country, emphasizing experimentation in a variety of media -- painting, sculpture, photography, video and film, dance, music, and performance. But much of the space seems to be taken up with theaters and hallways; seeing the actual art won't take you long. Sitting on a front-row piece of property between the lake and the historic Water Tower, the gloomy, imposing building (designed by Berlin's Josef Paul Kleihues) looks like something out of Communist Russia, but the interior spaces are more vibrant, with a sun-drenched two-story central corridor, elliptical staircases, and three floors of exhibition space. The MCA has tried to raise its national profile to the level of New York's Museum of Modern Art by hosting major touring retrospectives of working artists such as Cindy Sherman and Chuck Close. You can see the MCA's highlights in about an hour, although art lovers will want more time to wander (especially if a high-profile exhibit is in town). Your first stop should be the handsome barrel-vaulted galleries on the top floor, dedicated to pieces from the permanent collection. For visitors who'd like a little guidance for making sense of the rather challenging works found here, there is an audio tour for rent as well as a free tour (1 and 6pm Tues; 1pm Wed-Fri; 11am, noon, 1, and 2pm Sat-Sun). In addition to a range of special activities and educational programming, including films, performances, and a lecture series in a 300-seat theater, the museum features Puck's at the MCA, a cafe operated by Wolfgang Puck of Spago restaurant fame, with seating that overlooks a 1-acre terraced sculpture garden. There's also a store, Culturecounter, with one-of-a-kind gift items, that's worth a stop even if you don't make it into the museum. The museum's First Fridays program, featuring after-hours performances, live music, and food and drink, takes place the first Friday of every month. Allow 1 to 2 hours.
Chicago Children's Museum
Since the Chicago Children's Museum moved to Navy Pier in 1996, it has become one of the most popular cultural attractions in the city. The museum has areas especially for preschoolers as well as for children up to age 10, and several permanent exhibits allow kids a maximum of hands-on fun. Dinosaur Expedition re-creates an expedition to the Sahara, allowing kids to experience camp life, conduct scientific research, and dig for the bones of Suchomimus, a Saharan dinosaur discovered by Chicago paleontologist Paul Sereno (a full-scale model stands nearby). Face to Face: Dealing with Prejudice and Discrimination is a multimedia display that helps kids identify prejudice and find ways to deal with it. There's also a three-level schooner that children can board for a little climbing, from the crow's nest to the gangplank; PlayMaze, a toddler-scale cityscape with everything from a gas station to a city bus that children under 5 can touch and explore; and an arts-and-crafts area where visitors can create original artwork to take home. Allow 2 to 3 hours.

Fun

Steve, Madison, WI, 2007-03-11

Bars and restaurants abound near Rush and State. Theaters a bit further, but still only a very short cab ride(5-10 minutes).

We spent three nights at the Ambassador while in Chicago for a musical and the Big Ten Baskeball Tournament. The hotel staff was friendly and extremely helpful, especially with their suggestions for getting around while in the city. Location near Rush and State is unbeatable.

My review of Ambassador East Hotel

Anonymous, Cincinnati, OH, 2007-03-11

Walk north to Lincoln park through older neigborhoods.

All staff were very friendly. My queen room had plenty of space for two, but the bathroom was a little tight. Elegant common area with fireplace is a great place to read or relax. Surrounding area has tremedous variety within a few blocks.

Better than expected

Anonymous, 2007-03-05

They have a grocery store (Jewels), dunken donuts, small restaurant/bars, but loacated on the suburban line of chicago.

Ambassador East hotel was better accomadated than i expected. The dining area was a little price and some of the bartenders did not know how to make alcoholic drinks and under staffed But the manager was extremely pleasent and the food was delicious. Also the fitness room was small but adequate for all types of exercise (just make sure you get there early or come in the evening). The cleaning staff did a very good job and kept are room very nice also the front desk was more than helpful. We did have to take taxi to most of our outings but that might have been due to the weather being so windy and cold. Its not at the best location but close enough that you don't have to pay an arm and a leg to get to your destination. Overall the stay was pleasent and I definetly would recommend it to a friend.

Fitness not!

Anonymous, Minneapolis, MN, 2007-02-19

Everything was great about this hotel expect the fitness center. It was small and the equipment very poor. If you don't work out or care about that its a great hotel. Easy to get around the city and close to everything. The dining was very nice. The piano bar was perfect for ending the day.

Weekend Away

Cathy, 2007-02-19

Magnificent Mile and Gold Coast neighborhood. CVC Pharmacy.

We were very happy with the Ambassador hotel for its comfort and luxury feel. We enjoyed staying in a hotel with so much history. It was within walking distance to restaurants and unique shops. Loved the deep bath tub, for a long hot bath. The large room off the lobby had a beautiful fire place, which was welcoming after a short walk during a chicago winter snow. My husband and I stayed for a weekend away from the kids. I would love to make it my regular home away from home.

There's a resteraunt in the hotel called the Pump Room, but there are also several within walking distance down State St.

The Ambassador East is located in the heart of the Gold Coast and is within walking distance of several resteraunts and stores. The hotel is older and was once a main attraction for movie stars and celebrities. It has been kept up well and was very clean and cozy. Our room was kind of small, but not bad. The bed was comfortable and the faucets worked well, in fact, the only thing missing was a fridge. The staff was super-friendly and very helpful. I would stay here again--especially if I got another good deal on a room rate.
