During your Chicago vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Ravinia Festival
Want to know where the natives get away from it all? Come summertime, you'll find us chilling on the lawn at Ravinia, the summer home of the highly regarded Chicago Symphony Orchestra in suburban Highland Park. The season runs from mid-June to Labor Day and includes far more than classical concerts: You can also catch pop acts, dance performances, operatic arias, and blues concerts. Tickets are sold to both the covered pavilion, where you get a reserved seat and a view of the stage, and the lawn, which is the real joy of Ravinia: sitting under the stars and a canopy of leafy branches while listening to music and indulging in an elaborate picnic (it's a local tradition to try to outdo everyone else by bringing candelabras and fine china). I've been here for everything from Beethoven symphonies to folky singer-songwriters, and the setting has been magical every time. The lawn to the left of the stage is a popular place for families to spread out, but I'm partial to the tree-filled area on the right (the lights projected into the branches create a dramatic effect after the sun sets).Don't let the distance from downtown discourage you from visiting, because Ravinia is served by an extremely convenient public-transportation system. Any evening a concert is scheduled, a special Ravinia Metra commuter train leaves at 5:50pm from the North Western train station at Madison and Canal streets (just west of the Loop). The train stops directly at the festival at 6:30pm, plenty of time to enjoy a picnic before an 8 o'clock showtime. After the concert, trains wait right outside the gates to take commuters back to the city. The round-trip train fare is $5, a real bargain considering that traffic around the park can be brutal.Dining options available at the park range from the fine-dining restaurant Mirabelle (tel. 847/432-7550 for reservations) to prepacked picnic spreads from the Gatehouse, featuring gourmet items to go. For $10, you can rent a pair of lawn chairs and a table from booths set up near the park entrance. In case you're wondering about the weather conditions at concert time, dial Ravinia's Weather Line (tel. 847/433-5010).
Wendella Sightseeing Boats
Wendella is the granddaddy of all sightseeing operators in Chicago. Started in 1935, it's run by the original owner's son, Bob Borgstrom, whose own two sons serve as captains. You won't find a more authoritative source on the Chicago River than Borgstrom.Wendella operates a 1-hour tour along the Chicago River, and a 1 1/2-tour along the river and out onto Lake Michigan. (One of the most dramatic events during the boat tours is passing through the locks that separate the river from the lake.) Boats run from late April to early October. The 2-hour sunset tour runs Memorial Day to Labor Day starting at 7:45pm. Scheduling for cruises depends on the season and the weather, but cruises usually leave every hour during the summer.
John G. Shedd Aquarium
The Shedd is a city treasure and well deserving of its title as world's largest indoor aquarium. A mix of standard aquarium tanks and elaborate new habitats, this marble octagon building is filled with thousands of denizens of river, lake, and sea. The only problem with the Shedd is its steep admission price. You can keep your costs down by buying the "Aquarium Only" admission, but then you'll be missing some of the most stunning exhibits. The first thing you'll see as you enter is the Caribbean Coral Reef. This 90,000-gallon circular tank occupies the Beaux Arts-style central rotunda, entertaining spectators who press up against the glass to ogle divers feeding nurse sharks, barracudas, stingrays, and a hawksbill sea turtle. New technology includes an enhanced sound system and a roving camera connected to video monitors mounted on the tank's periphery, which gives visitors close-ups of the animals inside. It's worth sticking around to catch one of the daily feedings, when a diver swims around the tank and (thanks to a microphone) talks about the species and their eating habits. The exhibits surrounding the Caribbean coral reef re-create different marine habitats around the world. The best is Amazon Rising: Seasons of the River, a re-creation of the Amazon basin that showcases far more than fish (although you'll get to see some sharp-toothed piranhas as well). You'll pay extra to see the other Shedd highlights, but they're quite impressive, so I'd suggest shelling out for at least one. The Oceanarium , with a wall of windows revealing the lake outside, re-creates a Pacific Northwest coastal environment and creates the illusion of one uninterrupted expanse of sea. On a fixed performance schedule in a large pool flanked by an amphitheater, a crew of friendly trainers puts dolphins through their paces of leaping dives, breaches, and tail walking. Check out the Oceanarium schedule as soon as you get to the Shedd; seating space fills up quickly for the shows, so you'll want to get there early. If you're visiting during a summer weekend, you may also want to buy your Oceanarium ticket in advance to make sure you can catch a show that day. The newest signature exhibit is Wild Reef -- Sharks at Shedd , a series of 26 interconnected habitats that house a Philippine coral reef patrolled by sharks and other predators. The floor-to-ceiling windows bring those toothy swimmers up close and personal (they even swim over your head at certain spots). If you want a quality sit-down meal in a restaurant with a spectacular view of Lake Michigan, check out Soundings, right there inside the aquarium. There's also a family-friendly cafeteria. Allow 2 to 3 hours.

fantastic

Just climb the stairs to your left as you exit the hotel and you're on Michigan Avenue -- standing at the base of the Tribune Tower.

We loved our three day stay at the Amalfi. The staff was courteous, the room was comfortable and the evening reception and breakfast were top notch. Free wifi. This is a great place in a great location -- just off State and Kenzie.

Good business trip destination

Anonymous, Minneapolis, MN, 2007-03-11

The rooms were very small. There were four of us and this room only had space for the beds. The lobby needs to be reuphosltered, they have upscale furniture with soiled uphosltery. I loved the breakfast on each floor, you can go out in your robe and slippers provided by the hotel. I was disapointed there was no bar, restaurant or lounge. The add about the lounge party each evening from 5-7PM was deceiving, they had us all in a meeting room, they served nice food and drinks were free which was great!!! but with as many guests as were there people were sitting on the floor in the hall. The evening cocktail time in itself was a great aminity though! Good enough for the price for sure!

Great for fun and buiness

Ignacio, Chicago, IL, 2007-03-04

The Amalfi hotel was amazing, specially the fact of breakfast is included and there are complimentary cocktails in the evening. Its great location makes it perfect for fun, lots of bars around, and for business, really close to the Loop.

Great value

Harry Caray's restaurant is a tourist attraction with great food.

We're coming back to this hotel. The Amalfi is within easy walking distance of the Loop and the Magnificent Mile. The rooms were large, well appointed, and very comfortable. The fitness center was well-equipped, and the nearby restaurants were very good. We especially liked the continental breakfast served on each floor and the ability to walk out in your robe, grab your meal, and return to your room.

sleek clean but boring

MICHAEL, 2007-02-25

The hotel is well located-- 2 blocks to the shopping of Michigan Avenue and in the middle of the Rush street area where excellent restaurants and nightlife abound.

The Amalfi is nicely located and as aresult the absence of dining or lounge is not a big deal since there's so much around it. It is a clean and very modern European in its decor (which doesn't happen to be our style). The room though small was very clean and comfortable. The bathroom was quite luxurious and almost as big as the bedroom. In summary, for an overnight stay in downtown Chicago, it was quite acceptable and reasonably priced.

Great for a weekend getaway

Anonymous, 2007-02-19

There are plenty of bars within walking distance and several places to dine and enjoy music.

It was located close to several shopping and dining facilities, which were all within walking distance. Navy Pier is about a mile away and a nice walk if it's not too cold. There wasn't much of a view from the room we stayed in except for the alley.

Very customer oriented

Jesse, Phoenix, AZ, 2007-02-19

We chose not to rent a car due to high parking fees (at any hotel), plus the price of renting the car, and parking anywhere else downtown. We took cabs, walked, and became well versed in the L. I think overall we saved money.

The Amalfi provided great customer service and the location downtown was very convenient. Everything we did was only a short distance away (restaurants, theater, and museums). Check in and check out were very simple and easy and the night doorman and room service staff were oustanding! Continental breakfast every morning, happy hour in their lounge area every evening, and turndown service as well. We will definitely return.

Upscale for adults

Anonymous, Cleveland, OH, 2007-02-19

Near enough to CIA. Convenient to many restaurants.

The Amalfi was convenient to Rush street and the Miracle Mile. Easy access to busses. Loved the look of the hotel. Room was sufficient and bathroom was larger than most. Closet was a little small, but there was enough drawer space for two people staying three nights. Best part was the daily continental breakfast on each floor and the happy hour and hors devours was a real plus. The Amalfitini was delicious. Even though there was no bar or restaurant on the property there was one on the adjacent and same corner. Already recommended to a family member.
