During your Honolulu vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
North Shore Surf and Cultural Museum
Even if you've never set foot on a surfboard, you'll want to visit Oahu's only surf museum to learn the history of this Hawaiian sport of kings. This collection of memorabilia traces the evolution of surfboards from an enormous, weathered redwood board made in the 1930s for Turkey Love, one of Waikiki's legendary beach boys, to the modern-day equivalent -- a light, sleek, racy, foam-and-fiberglass board made for big-wave surfer Mark Foo, who drowned while surfing in California in 1994. Other items include classic 1950s surf-meet posters, 1960s surf-music album covers, old beach movie posters with Frankie Avalon and Sandra Dee, the early black-and-white photos by legendary surf photographer LeRoy Grannis, and trophies won by surfing's greatest. Curator Steve Gould is working on a new exhibit of surfing in the ancient Hawaiian culture, complete with Hawaiian artifacts.
Honolulu Sailing Co
This company has been in business for 2 decades, offering a variety of sailing activities. Our favorite is the Diamond Head snorkel-picnic sail on the waves. During whale season (roughly Dec-Apr), check out the half- and full-day adventures to see whales, dolphins, flyingfish,
Bishop Museum
This forbidding, four-story Romanesque lava-rock structure (it looks like something out of a Charles Addams cartoon) holds safe the world's greatest collection of natural and cultural artifacts from Hawaii and the Pacific. It's a great rainy-day diversion; plan to spend about half a day here. The museum was founded by a Hawaiian princess, Bernice Pauahi, who collected priceless artifacts and in her will instructed her husband, Charles Reed Bishop, to establish a Hawaiian museum "to enrich and delight" the people of Hawaii. The institution is now home to Dr. Yosihiko Sinoto, the last in a proud line of adventuring archaeologists who explored more of the Pacific than Captain Cook and traced Hawaii's history and culture through its fishhooks. The Bishop is jam-packed with acquisitions -- from insect specimens and ceremonial spears to calabashes and old photos of topless hula dancers. A visit here will give you a good basis for understanding Hawaiian life and culture. You'll see the great feathered capes of kings, the last grass shack in Hawaii, preindustrial Polynesian art, even the skeleton of a 50-foot sperm whale. There are also seashells, koa-wood bowls, nose flutes, and Dr. Sinoto's major collection of fishhooks.Hula performances take place daily at 11am and 2pm, and various Hawaiian crafts, such as feather-working and quilting, are demonstrated. This daily cultural event is worth making time for. For a look at spectacular artifacts such as the ancient feather cloak of King Kamehameha and other items not shown to the general public, take the "Behind the Scenes Tour," offered weekdays at 1:30pm for an additional fee of $15.

Good Hotel for the Money

Anonymous, Columbus, OH

Lulu's bar at the corner on second floor was excellent! Everything we tried was great, priced right too.

We had a very nice stay at this hotel. The staff was very freindly and helpful. We had a great view of Diamond Head and the ocean. The staff was always there to help and say hello. They even changed our room departure time and helped arrange transport to airport when a family member had to change plans. This is a nice hotel, close to the beach, bus and trolley stops and shopping and restaurants. It is not a fancy hotel, but a good friendly, clean place for the price. We really enjoyed our stay and will stay again.

Great Location

Anonymous, 2006-10-16

It has quite a nice hamburger joint off the lobby and is very close to shopping and some nice restaurants.

The Waikiki Grand Hotel was somewhat comfortable and contained the bare neccessities required such as a queen sized bed, refrigerator, iron with board, microwave oven, coffee maker sink, and eating utensils including pots and pans. I was somewhat put off by seeing bugs and roaches running around the place upon my arrival. After getting over the initial shock of that, I resigned myself to the fact the reason I chose the hotel was because of the location, it was right accross the street from the beach and zoo and housed a bar I knew I would frequent on the second floor.

Great Deal

If you want to save on parking, you can park a block away for free. We parked by the Zoo, on the east side of the hotel. It's a very short walk a way never and we never had any problems.

The rooms at the Waikiki Grand Hotel are privately owned; that being said, the quality of each room will vary. The room we stayed was great-king size bed, amazing view of the beach, very cozy. Staff is friendly and helpful and the hotel is only a block away from the beach and walking distance to many restaurants and shops. Only complaint was that the cleanliness of the room, but its a great bargain for the location.

adequate accommodations

Thomas, Washington, DC, 2006-08-21

Shopping, dining and entertainment were all within easy walking distance to the hotel. It is also only 1 block from the beach.

The property is a "typical" beach hotel. It is not a luxury hotel, but it is certainly adequate, besides when you are in Waikiki, you don't spend a lot of time in your room. Having a full service kitchen was a big plus. The biggest draw back was a lack of room darkening window treatments and construction next door, bot of which interfered with sleep.

Excellent location

Douglas, Chicago, IL, 2006-07-17

Waikiki Beach is a 2-minute walk from the hotel. It is one of the best in the U.S.

The Waikiki Grand is 1/2 block from Waikiki Beach and right across the street from a beautiful park. From our lanai we had a great view of Diamondhead. The room was somewhat small, but clean. The bed was quite comfortable. The price was reasonable. No dining facilities, but there are restaurants nearby. My wife and I would stay there again.

Relatively nice and cheap

Anonymous, 2006-05-22

My room (719) was large with fold-out couch and separate kitchenette. One wall was all glass with partial view of Diamondhead. FAR chaeaper than anything in Waikiki area. Common areas need repainting and freshening upped. Nice find for those on a budget.

Air conditoner fom hell

Kenneth, Los Angeles, CA, 2005-09-20

Short walk to Kuhio beach park and across the street fromKapoilani Park.

The AC unit was mounted on the wall over the bed which contributed to my sinus infection. The condenser for the unit took up a third of the balcnoy area and was like a blast furnuce when I tried to enjoy this space. A huge column in the middle of the widow wall blocked much of the view and the sliding door did not operate without my lifting it and carrying it above the track.
