During your Honolulu vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Makaha Resort Golf Club
This challenging course -- recently named "The Best Golf Course on Oahu" by Honolulu magazine -- sits some 45 miles west of Honolulu, in Makaha Valley. Designed by William Bell, the par-72, 7,091-yard course meanders toward the ocean before turning and heading into the valley. Sheer volcanic walls tower 1,500 feet above the course, which is surrounded by swaying palm trees and neon-bright bougainvillea; an occasional peacock will even strut across the fairways. The beauty here could make it difficult to keep your mind on the game if it weren't for the course's many challenges: 8 water hazards, 107 bunkers, and frequent brisk winds. This course is packed on weekends, so it's best to try weekdays. Facilities include a pro shop, bag storage, and snack shop.
Lyon Arboretum
The Arboretum is closed until further notice. Six-story-tall breadfruit trees . . . yellow orchids no bigger than a bus token . . . ferns with fuzzy buds as big as a human head: Lyon Arboretum is 194 budding acres of botanical wonders. A whole different world opens up to you along the self-guided 20-minute hike through the arboretum to Inspiration Point. You'll pass more than 5,000 exotic tropical plants full of birdsong in this cultivated rainforest (a University of Hawaii research facility) at the head of Manoa Valley. Guided tours for serious plant lovers are offered the first Friday and the third Wednesday of the month at 1pm and the third Saturday at 10am; call tel. 808/988-3177 for schedule and reservations.
Lanikai Beach
This is one of the best places on Oahu to greet the sunrise. Watch the sky slowly move from pitch black to wisps of gray to burnt orange as the sun begins to rise over the two tiny offshore islands of Mokulua. Use your five senses for this experience: hear the birds sing, feel the gentle breezes on your face, taste the salt in the air, smell the ocean, and see the kaleidoscope of colors as another day dawns.

Good vaue!

cheryl, Tampa, FL

waikiki gateway hotel has a very friendly staff. always willing to help with almost anything one needed, always had smiles on thier faces, and an aloha! for you as you came in went thru the lobby! The breakfast lady,( continental breakfast each morning from 6;30-9 am) was an absolute doll! She made our mornings, every one of them 14 mornings we were there! She is a wonderful asset to that place! The hotel itself was clean, the 'activities desk' is a great place to visit too! I will return someday..2 thumbs up!

You get what you PAY for!!!

Markeeta, Durham/Raleigh, NC, 2007-03-04

The upside of things everything is nearby!! Shopping is only right across the street. As well as plently of good eats. And if you don't mind walking alittle everything is on the strip directly across the street form the hotel. Dont rent a car take the bus or the trolly for only $2 or rent mopeds for .99cent an hour!!!! You'll have a ball!!!!!

Now I have got to admitt The Gateway Hotel is really in walikng distance to all of the beach attractions. As far as the hotel goes you get what you pay for. The way I look at is if you want to spend your money on activities then stay somewhere rather cheap beacuse you are only going to sleep there and that's exactly what we did. When they say renovated we all know what that means but it looked as though no renovations had been made only to the front desk entry level of the hotel, the hallway where the pool and business center was, and the top floor which is the penthouse level.

Extremely accommodating

Anonymous, 2007-02-18

I was very pleased with my stay. The staff was very helpful in giving directions, helping with my massive amount of luggage, as well as recommending activities. The room was clean with everything in working order. The breakfast was great and served on a balcony with a beautiful view. It's a short walk from the beach and the shuttle from the airport is just $15 round trip. I would definitely stay there again.

Good value for the price

Try the Sansei Sushi Bar about 5 (long) blocks down Waikiki. 1/2 off on Thurs-Sat from 10pm-1am!!

Very close to Waikiki, I thought the Gateway was a great deal. Staff are friendly and rooms are clean. The beds are hard but who cares?

helpful staff and good business amenities

Anonymous, 2007-02-03

Waikiki beach is close by and there are lots of restaurants also within very easy walking distance.

I was very impressed by the efficiency and helpfulness of the front desk staff. They were great. I thought the ability to have high speed internet was a great draw and very helpful to me. This hotel is a great value for the money and in a good location. I wish the housekeeping staff was a little more thorough .The continental breakfast is not that great but I wasn't too concerned about that. I would definately stay there again, a good experience.

atrocious parking prices

larry, 2006-08-27

you are several blocks from the shops in waikiki and most dining establishments. lots of traffic going into hotel and getting out. in the middle of 2 busy streets-kalakaua and kuhio avenues.

parking was $9.37 per day however it was valet parking only. you were not able to park your car yourself although the parking spaces were on the same floor. everytime you went out you had to tip the valet person. the parking structure was closed froom 1am to 6am. what is there was an emergency? construction was going on in the lobby and elevator area also. would not recomment to other visitors.

A happy experience

Anonymous, Kona, HI, 2006-08-06

this hotel is centrally located next to everything and although we had a rental car, we used it only to drive to the airport the next day. They have excellent bus and taxi service nearby and most of the time we walked to wherever we wanted to visit.

I checked in very late. I was extremely happy with everything about this hotel.

what a dump!

jim, Prescott, AZ, 2006-07-16

There were holes in the walls, stains on the ceiling and on the carpet. The room was in need of a paint job. As I was checking in a woman came to the counter and told the clerk that her room was so bad that her and her husband where checking out. She was right. This hotel is a dump!

You get what you pay for

Kaye, 2006-04-16

When you stay at the Waikiki Gateway, you will be in a convenient location, but be aware that this is a VERY old hotel that has not been updated at all ... although they were working on the Penthouse when we were there. The halls are narrow and unattractive; the rooms are VERY basic with very old everything; the carpets are old; the elevator carpet is a billion years old and possibly never cleaned; there are patches on the walls; and the pillows were possibly the first ones every put there they were so flat and uncomfortable. That said, the rooms were clean and from our balcony you could see the water; it is conveniently located and the staff were friendly and helpful. It is truly an economy hotel, so if you don't care about its age and you'd rather spend money on going places and doing things, it's a good bargain.

Under construction

Charlene, Hilo, HI, 2006-02-13

Check out the NikeTown shop next door on the east side, the shop is nice and the staff very friendly.

The Waikiki Gateway was in a great spot of Waikiki but the hotel was under renovation so we could not open our lanai door. They force you to participate with valet parking, but on the second day there the valet attendant scratched our rental car. The supervisor assisted us with filing a complaint but I still had to fill out forms with the rental agreement and my credit card. The only thing good about the hotel is Nick's Restaurant located in the lobby, great taste and excellent service, they should teach the hotel a few things.
