During your Honolulu vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Kukaniloko Birthing Stones
This is the most sacred site in central Oahu. Two rows of 18 lava rocks once flanked a central birthing stone, where women of ancient Hawaii gave birth to potential alii (royalty). The rocks, according to Hawaiian belief, held the power to ease the labor pains of childbirth. Birth rituals involved 48 chiefs who pounded drums to announce the arrival of newborns likely to become chiefs. Children born here were taken to the now-destroyed Holonopahu Heiau in the pineapple field, where chiefs ceremoniously cut the umbilical cord.Used by Oahu's alii for generations of births, the pohaku (rocks), many in bowl-like shapes, now lie strewn in a grove of trees that stands in a pineapple field here. Some think the site also may have served ancient astronomers -- like a Hawaiian Stonehenge. Petroglyphs of human forms and circles appear on some of the stones. The Wahiawa Hawaiian Civic Club recently erected two interpretive signs, one explaining why this was chosen as a birth site and the other telling how the stones were used to aid in the birth process.
Queen Emma Summer Palace
Hanaiakamalama, the name of the country estate of Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma, was once in the secluded uplands of Nuuanu Valley. These days, it's adjacent to a six-lane highway full of speeding cars that sound remarkably like surf as they zip by. This simple, seven-room New England-style house, built in 1848 and restored by the Daughters of Hawaii, is worth about an hour of your time to see the interesting blend of Victorian furniture and hallmarks of Hawaiian royalty, including feather cloaks and kahili, the feathered standards that mark the presence of alii (royalty). Other royal treasures include a canoe-shaped cradle for Queen Emma's baby, Prince Albert, who died at the age of 4. (Kauai's ultra-ritzy Princeville Resort is named for the little prince.)
Polynesian Cultural Center
Even if you never leave Hawaii, you can still experience the natural beauty and culture of the vast Pacific in a single day at the Polynesian Cultural Center, a kind of living museum of Polynesia. Here, you can see first-hand the lifestyles, songs, dance, costumes, and architecture of seven Pacific islands -- Fiji, New Zealand, Marquesas, Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga, and Hawaii -- in the re-created villages scattered throughout the 42-acre lagoon park. A new $1.1 million renovation project has re-done the front entrance and added an exhibit on the story of the Polynesian migration. You "travel" through this museum by foot or in a canoe on a man-made freshwater lagoon. Each village is "inhabited" by native students from Polynesia who attend Hawaii's Brigham Young University. The park, which is operated by the Mormon Church, also features a variety of stage shows celebrating the music, dance, history, and culture of Polynesia. There's a luau every evening. Because a visit can take up to 8 hours, it's a good idea to arrive before 2pm.Just beyond the center is the Hawaii Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which is built of volcanic rock and concrete in the form of a Greek cross and includes reflecting pools, formal gardens, and royal palms. Completed in 1919, it was the first Mormon temple built outside the continental United States. An optional tour of the Temple Visitors Center, as well as neighboring Brigham Young University, Hawaii, is included in the package admission prices.

On the beach!

Brooke, 2007-03-12

Breakfast at the Hau Tree Restaurant is really, really, good. Try the poi pancakes.

The New Otani was a very friendly, very relaxing place to spend a weekend on Oahu. The rooms are small, decor a little old, but fabulous location by the gorgeous Diamond Head crater & secluded Sans Souchi Beach. We loved the restaurant at the hotel, which was perfect for people watching on the beach at breakfast, or romantic sunset dinner. This place would be perfect for couples like us who don't care about having a pool or shopping in crazy downtown Waikiki. Nice park right behind hotel too. Good for walking/jogging.

Not so new.

Hotel is in need of updates. Very 1970's. Lamps didn't work in bedroom. Paint was peeling off of ceiling in the bathroom. Room was not ready upon check in.

Very family friendly

Lizabeth, Los Angeles, CA, 2006-08-20

There's a little market at the end of the hotel

I was disapointed on the room. Our room had a small bedroom no living room. I felt very enclosed, I had to upgrade to the larger room which offered a living room for add'l $100.00 per night. I would of stayed elsewhere if I was planing on spending that kind of money. After i upgraded to the bigger room i was satisfied.

away from the hubbub

Anonymous, Roanoke, VA, 2006-08-17

There are grassy parks next to the hotel and across from it. Waikiki beaches, dining, shopping, Starbucks, etc., are within walking distance.

The hotel is away from the main hubbub of Waikiki and yet is right on the beach and within walking distance of Waikiki. The Hau Tree Restaurant is a very nice - and affordable - place for breakfast and lunch, with a view of the blue (water and sky). We had a room with a connecting door to the room next door; it was as if the neighbors were talking inside our room, and this happened at about 4:30 AM, waking us prematurely. It would have helped if there had been at least a double door between these two rooms; as it was, we could see the light coming from the neighbors' room into ours. The hotel provides high-speed internet access; high-speed internet service would have been wireless, and free. Hotel parking is exclusively valet parking; you can try parking on your own, on the usually busy street. Local phone calls, use of the room safe, internet access, valet parking, and beach chairs all come at extra cost; however, beach towels are provided free of charge.

Hard to find

Anonymous, Fort Myers, FL, 2006-07-01

1. Hugh park directly across from the hotel. 2. Aquarium and Zoo within walking or short drive distance.

The New Otani Hotel was very hard to find. It is located east of Waikiki Beach on a one way street with very small signage. Once we were able to find the hotel, we found the beach and view from the restaurant to be beautiful. However, our room was tiny and the only view was from outside on the balcony.

Very quiet location

Anonymous, Detroit, MI, 2006-06-25

Waikiki is just a short walk where you will find hundreds of shops or you could get on The Bus which will take you to the Ala Moana Shopping Center for more variety of shops.

The New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel is in a quiet location - on the beach right below Diamond Head and across from Kapiolani Park where there are always weekend activities. I prefer the Diamond Head end of Waikiki. It is just a short walk to the heart of Waikiki. The room was small but adequate and clean, complete with a refrigerator and a safe. The staff was friendly and helpful. Very pleasant surroundings. The Hau Tree Lanai Restaurant is in the perfect location - open to Waikiki Beach and beautiful sunsets. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Great Value

Anonymous, 2006-05-29

If you are traveling with Kids, the aquarium and Zoo are right next door to the hotel.

The New Otani Kaimani is a great value. Rooms are on the small side, but as it's Hawaii you won't be spending much time in the room. The location is much quieter than in the heart of waikiki but still in walking distance along the water and the beach in front of the hotel is also much less crowded than the rest of waikiki. The staff is very friendly and helpful. If you are there on a wednesday the hotel provides a general managers reception with free drinks and appetizers.

Nice for escape from rat race

Anonymous, 2006-04-26

This hotel was clean and the help was friendly. Had nice resturaunt and bar. Beach was clean and very little stones at water edge. It is somewhat secluded from the rest of the beaches and so it allowed for privacy. Also, it was a healthy walk from shopping. Nice park across the street. Not far at all from zoo and aquarium. I will stay again for short stay. Long stays prefer to be more in the thick of things.

Hotel opinion

Rhonda, Pittsburgh, PA, 2006-04-17

We did not find much of the party night life along the beach and we thought our hotel catered to a much older crowd. 60+

The hotel room was unusually small but clean. The so called ocean view faced the opposing hotel and did not have a pool. The problem we encountered was during our stay the city dumped thier sewage into the canal during the flood. Therefore leaving a flesh eating bacteria in the water so we were not able to swim during our stay in paradise until Thursday. It would have been nice to have a had a pool. We will not be returning anytime soon even though we have family there. Also the hotel is not in safe walking distance from downtown at night. We had a street dweller follow us and was totally uncomfortable with this situation.

The New Otani

Mary Theresa, Harrisburg, PA, 2005-12-09

There is a small grocery store in front of it to grab some items which was nice. Stores galore were only a short drive away - one could use a taxi or they could walk. It had valet parking which was nice.

Our room at the New Otani was a little small but we managed to deal with it. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was a nice size even though it wasn't separate from the vanity area. The room had a wall that was all mirror but it would have been nice if there was an outlet near it so one could get ready in front of it. The location was excellent - we walked out the lobby and we were on the beach. One negative - the bathroom had real tiny bugs in it - including on the sink and the floor. We dealt with it until our last morning there when I woke up to find them on our bed backboard!! I called the front desk and reported it - hopefully they took care of it for their next guests!!
