During your Honolulu vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
North Shore Surf and Cultural Museum
Even if you've never set foot on a surfboard, you'll want to visit Oahu's only surf museum to learn the history of this Hawaiian sport of kings. This collection of memorabilia traces the evolution of surfboards from an enormous, weathered redwood board made in the 1930s for Turkey Love, one of Waikiki's legendary beach boys, to the modern-day equivalent -- a light, sleek, racy, foam-and-fiberglass board made for big-wave surfer Mark Foo, who drowned while surfing in California in 1994. Other items include classic 1950s surf-meet posters, 1960s surf-music album covers, old beach movie posters with Frankie Avalon and Sandra Dee, the early black-and-white photos by legendary surf photographer LeRoy Grannis, and trophies won by surfing's greatest. Curator Steve Gould is working on a new exhibit of surfing in the ancient Hawaiian culture, complete with Hawaiian artifacts.
Nuuanu Valley Rain Forest
It's not the same as a peaceful nature walk, but if time is short and hiking isn't your thing, Honolulu has a rainforest you can drive through. It's only a few minutes from downtown Honolulu in verdant Nuuanu Valley, where it rains nearly 300 inches a year. And it's easy to reach: As the Pali Highway leaves residential Nuuanu and begins its climb though the forest, the last stoplight is the Nuuanu Pali Road turnoff; turn right for a jungly detour of about 2 miles under a thick canopy strung with liana vines, past giant bamboo that creaks in the wind, Norfolk pines, and wild shell ginger. The road rises and the vegetation clears as you drive, blinking in the bright light of day, past a small mountain reservoir.Soon the road rejoins the Pali Highway. Kailua is to the right and Honolulu to the left -- but it can be a hair-raising turn. Instead, turn right, go a half-mile to the Nuuanu Pali Lookout , stop for a panoramic view of Oahu's windward side, and return to the town-bound highway on the other side.
Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park
If you have kids, you have to take them here! This 29-acre water-theme amusement park opened in spring 1999 with some $14 million in attractions. Plan to spend the day. Highlights are a football field-sized wave pool for bodysurfing, two 65-foot-high free-fall slides, two water-toboggan bullet slides, inner-tube slides, body flume slides, a continuous river for floating inner tubes, and separate pools for adults, teens, and children. In addition, there are restaurants, food carts, Hawaiian performances, and shops.

Good value for money

Dora, Burbank, CA

Drop by any local convenience store (one on every block) and pick up some Kona coffee. It goes well in the morning while sitting on the balcony overlooking the ocean.

The Pacific Monarch is about 2 very short blocks to the beach and very close to everything. This makes up for the old room furniture and carpeting. During our stay, there was only one front desk staff person at any given time. This meant that we had to wait up to 15 minutes to ask a simple question at times. They also try to pass off two twin beds pushed together as a queen size bed--which was very uncomfortable for us as a couple. But given the cost and the location, it is overall a good value for the money spent.

Great location.

ResortQuest Pacific Monarch (formerly Aston Pacific Monarch)is located in a great location. The price is very reasonable for being just 2 blocks from the beach. It's near the shopping strip, resturants, and stores.

Awesome Staff

Waikki Beach Many city bus stops Night Clubs

The staff at the ResortQuest Pacific Monarch was very helpful in giving us information about public transportation and made it a really easy pleasureable stay. The hotel was very comfortable regardless of it's mediocre room furnishings. We enjoyed our stay tremendously. If you plan to be out on the town rather than in your room, this hotel is sufficient. The ResortQuest Pacific Monarch is perfectly located near Waikki, about two blocks.

My review of ResortQuest Pacific Monarch

Location was wonderful. Two blocks from center of Waikiki. I'd classify this hotel as OK. Nothing fancy whatsoever. We liked the separate bedroom. Bathroom was fine. Shower did not drain as well as it could. Nice having a refrigerator and microwave.

Ouch...The Couch!

Anonymous, Houston, TX, 2006-09-16

Two blocks from beach. Most tour shuttles pickup at the Hyatt Recency, one block over at the Koa Ave entrance(In case your planned tour shuttle doesn't stop at Pacific Monarch).

We couldn't have picked a closer location to the beach unless we slept on the sand! If you're keen on convenience, this is the place for you. But I won't recommend this hotel to anyone I know unless they have a dog that likes to use furniture as a chew toy. The sofa bed in our Full-Kitchen, Queen Bed Studio looked like it had been attacked by Kujo - imagine pillow stuffing bursting out the seams of a couch that was ready to take a trip to the dumpster. We tolerated that and the rickety-rack air-conditioner that leaked onto the balcony for 7 nights, but the breaktaking views of Kuhio Beach and the beautiful memories we carried home with us made it worth the while. Maybe not every room is fit for man's best friend...

best hotel for your money

dan, Sacramento, CA, 2006-05-14

Shopping at the International Market is a nice experience.

The room was great with ocean view and very close to the International Market. The small kithenette comes in handy if you just want to stay inside the room and make your own coffee or sandwich.

Wonderful Staff!!

Check out Aloha stadium if you have a car, It's perfect for gift's to bring back home and much cheaper then the international market place, although that is a fun walk through but remember to bargain with the prices

I took a long time trying to find the right hotel for our 10 day stay in Hawaii. The Pacific Monarch was perfect for my husband and myself. After our second day in Hawaii, I ended up breaking my heel, but the staff was wonderful in helping me with everything I needed. The hotel was nice enough to upgrade me to a wheel chair accessable room without charging me extra. I loved the roof top pool, and I had read that it was a 15 min walk to the beach, but in fact it was about 3 minutes. I plan to visit Hawaii again and will stay here for sure.

They really Try

patrick, Newark, NJ, 2006-04-03

in the heart of Waikiki is everything you need

My stay was fine but 25 minutes for a bell man to assist me over and hour for a engineer to fix things in the room, a front desk agent who was snippy, housekeeping not refillling amenities for restroom and shower. Its the things you remember the negative. They really do try though and its not a bad place to stay-- just have to have an open mind and paintence to your definition of service.

shopping is everywhere.

The Pacific Monarch was very comfortable and very reasonable. The hotel is located within walking distance of everything. The staff and everyone associated with this hotel were very professional and friendly. I would recommend this hotel to everyone that I know.

Great location

Valerie, Baltimore, MD, 2005-08-29

Waikiki beach is two blocks from the hotel. You can rent surf boards for $10 an hour on the beach. If you need lessons, there is a stand right next to the rental place. Also, the zoo and a park are also two blocks. I recommend taking The Bus ($2) to get around.

The Pacific Monarch was a great choice for the money. The location was great and the room size was large. After requesting a room change (because the one I got was unacceptable to say the least- with a hair stuck on the sheets and a construction site blocking my view), I was happy. I recommend getting a room on the 20th floor or higher. The staff at the front desk were helpful and made the stay feel comfortable. I would recommend staying at the Monarch. It was only 2 blocks from Waikiki beach and you pass the really expensive hotels on the way. I would stay there again.
