During your Honolulu vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Iolani Palace
If you want to really "understand" Hawaii, this 45-minute tour is well worth the time. The Iolani Palace was built by King David Kalakaua, who spared no expense. The 4-year project, completed in 1882, cost $360,000 -- and nearly bankrupted the Hawaiian kingdom. This four-story Italian Renaissance palace was the first electrified building in Honolulu (it had electricity before the White House and Buckingham Palace). Royals lived here for 11 years, until Queen Liliuokalani was deposed and the Hawaiian monarchy fell forever, in a palace coup led by U.S. Marines on January 17, 1893, at the demand of sugar planters and missionary descendants.Cherished by latter-day royalists, the 10-room palace stands as an architectural statement of the monarchy period. Iolani attracts 100,000 visitors a year in groups of 20; everyone must don denim booties to scoot across the royal floors. Tours are either a comprehensive Grand Tour, which is 90 minutes long and covers the Palace history, the Palace grounds, and the Palace itself; or the Galleries Tour, a self-guided tour of the Palace Galleries (complete with crown jewels, the ancient feathered cloaks, the Royal china, etc.).
Nuuanu Pali Lookout
Gale-force winds sometimes howl through the mountain pass at this 1,186-foot-high perch guarded by 3,000-foot peaks, so hold on to your hat -- and small children. But if you walk up from the parking lot to the precipice, you'll be rewarded with a view that'll blow you away. At the edge, the dizzying panorama of Oahu's windward side is breathtaking: Clouds low enough to pinch scoot by on trade winds; pinnacles of the pali (cliffs), green with ferns, often disappear in the mist, the vertical slopes of the Koolaus end in lush green valleys that become the town of Kaneohe; and the Pacific, a magnificent blue, dotted with whitecaps, beckons in the distance. Definitely take a jacket with you; it can be quite misty at the lookout. On very windy days, you'll notice that the waterfalls look as though they are flowing up rather than down.In 1898, John Wilson built the road up to the lookout using 200 laborers. Even before the road existed, the Nuuanu Pali (which translates as "cool heights") was infamous because legend claims it was the location of Kamehameha the Great's last battle. Although some academic scholars scoff at this, the story alleges that in 1795, Kamehameha pursued Oahu's warriors up Nuuanu to these cliffs and waged a battle in his attempt to unite the Hawaiian islands. Supposedly, the Oahu warriors were driven over the cliffs by Kamehameha's men. Some say the battle never happened, some say it happened but there were only a few men fighting, and some say thousands were forced over the cliff, plunging to their deaths. Others say at night you can still hear the cries of these long-dead warriors coming from the valley below. From on high, the tropical palette of green and blue runs down to the sea. Combine this 10-minute stop with a trip over the Pali to the windward side.
Hawaiian Railway
All aboard! This is a train ride back into history. Between 1890 and 1947, the chief mode of transportation for Oahu's sugar mills was the Oahu Railway and Land Co.'s narrow-gauge trains. The line carried not only equipment, raw sugar, and supplies, but also passengers from one side of the island to the other. You can relive those days every Sunday with a 1 1/2-hour narrated ride through Ko Olina Resort and out to Makaha. As an added attraction, on the second Sunday of the month, you can ride on the nearly 100-year-old, custom-built parlor-observation car belonging to Benjamin F. Dillingham, founder of the Oahu Railway and Land Co.; the fare is $15 (no kids under 13), you must reserve in advance.

Comfort in Paradise

Anonymous, Los Angeles, CA, 2007-02-22

Shopping and dining are all a short walk from this location. The local clubs are a quick taxi, but be taxi savvy, not silly. Activities are a short-mod. drive but there is tour bus and public transit p/u w/in a block or so. Look through the coupon book they give you, it is well worth your time.

The Resortquest Banyan was just what our party of 6 needed to keep everyone comfortable and satisfied. There was adequate sleeping room, we got two rooms 1 on the 15th & 16th flrs & split 3/room. One had two twins & a pull out couch which had a mattress that was sleepable. The other was a king size bed w/ the same couch. The divider between the rooms is 3 wooden sliding partitions which do little for noise privacy. The AC was great and the view of the water/beach was much better than our partial city view. The rooms were kept daily with fresh sheets every 3 days. This was plenty for our crew and the one morning I felt exception to this I called down to housekeeping and they had no problem changing them again for me. Our kitchen was larger than I expected and easy to serve a dinner for six, with 4 sitting well spread out across the bar and two at the coffee table at the couch/chair. It was stocked well enough with pots/pans and utensils. There was a mini mart of sorts next to the elevators and had all we needed. The pool/jacuzzis were clean and accessible. Walking distance from the beach, restaurants and shopping, location was ideal. We bought our own Kona Coffee so didn't mind that they did not replenish the stash they provided. The staff was GREAT! $50/wk for parking was just fine for us.

Great value in good location of Waikiki!

Tiki Bar. 2min walk. - Diamond Head Cove Health Bar, 3min drive by car. Great smoothies and breakfast. Try Da Cove Bowl. - ONO Hawaiian Foods. Short drive by car. Try the combination plate.

The hotel has a great location. Walking distance from restaurants, beach, shopping... The Zoo and the Aquarium is closed by as well. We had our room upgraded to a room with beach view which was really worth it and I would recommend to everyone who enjoys a nice breakfast on the balcony. The room was big and divided into sleeping area and kitchen/living room area with two separate tv's. Having a kitchen in the room is great for breakfast and keeping your drinks cool in the fridge. The hotels minimarket had a bit of everything for very good prices. We even found there very nice Hawaii mugs (1.50$) which we brought back for ourselves and some friends. The parking fee for 50$/week was very reasonable, too, if you compare with other hotels in the area charging 20$ and up/day. When we arrived one telephone and one remote control did not work. The staff was very friendly at all times and it was fixed immediately. The only thing I think would have been nicer if they would replace the coffee every day, they just give you a courtesy packet the first day. You almost expect it replaced because it is like that in most of the hotels and then on the second day you see that it wasn't and you have to run down to the minimarket in pijamas. ;)

Zoo, aquarium, beach and strip all nearby. we walked to smaller grocery store for any cooking needs as well. we did have a car and it was easy access to H-1 although the traffic was UNBELIEVABLE. Stay off the freeway as much as possible.

Staff was in general just plain unfriendly. Room and kitchen was VERY basic, but worked for a toddler. Location great for walking to zoo, aquarium, beach, shops etc.

Ocean view was the best part of this room. Room itself was a bit dirty on walls, doors and in the bathroom.Furniture seemed a little old and over-used. Throughout my stay I ahev found other hotels I would stay at next time, even if I had to walk more blocks to the beach.

Waikiki Beach was only 2 blocks away. Surfing, swimming or just sunning available at the beach.

Check-in personnel, was very helpful. The Waikiki Banyan Hotel had a very nice room set-up. There was a set of twin beds that had a sliding door set-up for privacy. The couch with sleeper was in a nice large area that also include the kitchenette, counter etc. The bathroom was small, but the sink and mirror was separate, which was very convenient. Very close to the beach. Very nice pool area, snack bar, grills available also. The hotel also had a small store to purchase groceries, etc. at reasonable prices. Bus stop was very near, as were taxis and various shuttles. All Waikiki Beach was only 2 blocks away. The only downside was the kitchen area could have been cleaner.
