During your Honolulu vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Lyon Arboretum
The Arboretum is closed until further notice. Six-story-tall breadfruit trees . . . yellow orchids no bigger than a bus token . . . ferns with fuzzy buds as big as a human head: Lyon Arboretum is 194 budding acres of botanical wonders. A whole different world opens up to you along the self-guided 20-minute hike through the arboretum to Inspiration Point. You'll pass more than 5,000 exotic tropical plants full of birdsong in this cultivated rainforest (a University of Hawaii research facility) at the head of Manoa Valley. Guided tours for serious plant lovers are offered the first Friday and the third Wednesday of the month at 1pm and the third Saturday at 10am; call tel. 808/988-3177 for schedule and reservations.
Diamond Head
The 360-degree view from atop Diamond Head Crater is worth the 560-foot ascent and is not to be missed. You can see all the way from the Koko Crater to Barbers Point and the Waianae Mountains. The 750-foot-tall volcano, which has become the symbol for Hawaii, is about 350,000 years old. The trail to the summit was built in 1910 to service the military installation along the crater; it's about a 30-minute hike to the top, but it's quite manageable by anyone of any age. Diamond Head has always been considered a "sacred sight" by Hawaiians. According to legend, Hi'iaka, the sister to the volcano goddess Pele, named the mountain Leahi (meaning the "brow of the ahi") when she saw the resemblance to the yellowfin tuna (called "ahi" in Hawaiian). Kamehameha the Great built a "luakini heiau" on the top where human sacrifices were made to the god of war, Ku.The name Diamond Head came into use around 1825 when a group of British sailors (some say they were slightly inebriated) found some rocks sparkling in the sun. Absolutely sure they had struck it rich, the sailors brought these "diamonds" back into Honolulu. Alas, the "diamonds" turned out to be calcite crystals. The sailors didn't become fabulously rich, but the name Diamond Head stuck.
Valley of the Temples
This famous cemetery in a cleft of the pali is stalked by wild peacocks and about 700 curious people a day, who pay to see the 9-foot meditation Buddha, 2 acres of ponds full of more than 10,000 Japanese koi carp, and a replica of Japan's 900-year-old Byodo in the Temple of Equality. The original, made of wood, stands in Uji, on the outskirts of Kyoto; the Hawaiian version, made of concrete, was erected in 1968 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaii. It's not the same as seeing the original, but it's worth a detour. A 3-ton brass temple bell brings good luck to those who can ring it -- although the gongs do jar the Zen-like serenity of this little bit of Japan. If you are in a rush, you can sail through here in an hour, but you'll want to stay longer.

Nice place for couples

cindi, Minneapolis, MN, 2006-09-04

There is a subway right in the hotel which is very handy and you can walk to downtown very close to dining and downtown shopping.

The rooms are very spacious and had two balconies. It was very nice having a washer and dryer and a kitchen. For the money its the only place we would stay at again for the size and space it was very very nice!

Worst location in waikiki

Anonymous, Los Angeles, CA, 2005-07-03

I would never stay at this hotel again. It was located in the busiest corner of waikiki. It didn't help that the staff was inefficient and unknowledgable (30 minute wait for them to retrieve your car). The worst part is that the waikiki shore doesn't have a front office in the building; A competitor has a desk down there, so they were inwilling to help you at all. The pool was dirty and the food was no good such a pity because Oahu has one of the most consistently delicious cuisines. This hotel was the only negative part of our trip. They could learn a lot about service from the neighboring Hilton Hawaiian Hotel where we stayed last time.

Excellent value for dollar

Robert, Cleveland, OH, 2005-05-12

The Waikiki Shores was immaculate and very well appointed. As a primarily residential condo complex most public areas (pool, restaurants, lounge, etc.) are at it's adjoining neighbor the Outrigger Reef. For us this worked out great with our condo being very quiet and sedate with plenty to do next door. The location is perfect with Fort Derussy on one side with it's large lawn areas. Private access to one of the best sections of Waikiki beach and all the beach activities is right at your door. Assigned parking on the lower level with elevator access is definitely a hard to find asset in Waikiki. We have stayed in this area of Waikiki for years and find Waikiki Shores to be the definite best choice. Staff is very friendly and helpful as at all Outrigger facilities we have stayed at. We were staying at an Outrigger hotel nearby when 9-11 happeden and were very impressed with the way this emergency was handled by the staff in this difficult time. We have already made our reservations for 2 weeks in January. A+ in our book.
