During your Honolulu vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Pali Golf Course
This beautiful municipal course sits near Kaneohe, just below the historic spot where King Kamehameha the Great won the battle that united the islands of Hawaii. The par-72, 6,494-yard course, designed by Willard G. Wilkinson and built in 1953, makes use of the natural terrain (hills and valleys make up the majority of the 250 acres). The course does not have man-made traps, but a small stream meanders through it. If you're off line on the ninth, you'll get to know the stream quite well. The challenge here is the weather -- whipping winds and frequent rainsqualls. Because of the potential for rain, you might want to pay for nine holes, and then assess the weather before signing up for the back nine. The views include Kaneohe Bay, the towns of Kailua and Kaneohe, and the verdant cliffs of the Koolau Mountains. Facilities include practice greens, club rental, locker rooms, and a restaurant.
Sea Life Park
This 62-acre ocean theme park, located in East Oahu, is one of the island's top attractions. It features whales from Puget Sound, Atlantic bottle-nosed dolphins, California sea lions, and penguins going through their hoops to the delight of kids of all ages. If you have kids, allow all day to take in the sights. There's also a Hawaiian reef tank full of tropical fish; a "touch" pool, where you can touch a real sea cucumber (commonly found in tide pools); and a bird sanctuary, where you can see birds like the red-footed booby and the frigate bird. The chief curiosity, though, is the world's only "wholphin" -- a cross between a false killer whale and an Atlantic bottle-nosed dolphin. On-site, marine biologists operate a recovery center for endangered marine life; during your visit, you'll be able to see rehabilitated Hawaiian monk seals and seabirds.
Puu Ualakaa State Park
The best sunset view of Honolulu is from a 1,048-foot-high hill named for sweet potatoes. Actually, the poetic Hawaiian name means "rolling sweet potato hill," which is how early planters used gravity to harvest their crop. The panorama is sweeping and majestic. On a clear day -- which is almost always -- you can see from Diamond Head to the Waianae Range, almost the length of Oahu. At night, several scenic overlooks provide romantic spots for young lovers who like to smooch under the stars with the city lights at their feet. It's a top-of-the-world experience -- the view, that is.

Waikiki with a kitchen

James, 2006-08-04

Beware of shopping for groceries in Waikiki, if possible get out of Waikiki and find a Foodland grocery. Its where the locals shop and prices are much more reasonable (for Hawaii).

OHANA Waikiki Malia was one of the few places that offered kitchenettes. With family food alergies this was essential. (Its also a lot cheaper to cook most of your own meals). The suite was clean. The airconditioners (one each room) worked so well that I would often turn them off in the middle of the night. The kitchenette was small but serviceable. More than one person in it was too much. Be aware that the hotel charges $2 for each small pot of coffee that they provide. I brought my own or you could get Kona coffee at any ABC store. They just converted their restaraunt to an IHOP the week before we got there so service was IHOP excellent and menu was dependable. Even though the shower had a low flow showerhead it didn't feel like you were taking a spitbath. Parking is a daily adventure :) The ramps into and out of the parking garage are narrow and low and have to be negotiated while turning. It gets easier after a few days of getting used to it.

Close to Shopping

Linda, 2006-02-18

Friday's is a great restaurant only 3 blocks away with lots of choice on the menu and reasonable rates. Can be very noisy at times so not the best for seniors.

The Ohana Waikki Malia is an older hotel. Use card key for locks and you need your key to activate elevators. One of the elevators didn't work properly and left us stuck between floors or wouldn't move at all. The room was a good size with 2 beds, tv, small table and 2 charis, tiny fridge, and a safe if you wanted for a daily fee. Bathroom was a good size, full vanity area with a sink, full tub and shower. Closet space was very good with sufficient hangers. Supplied iron, ironing board, hair dryer, soap, shampoo and lotion. Towels were small but could be replaced daily if required. Very thin walls as you can hear everything in the rooms next to you and in the hall. Also heard everything happening out on the street, voices, vehicles, construction, etc. (Warning this hotel has a problem with small biting ants) . Seven blocks from ocean beach, Galleria Shopping was one block away. Several small shops available to shop in and ABC across the street. Bus stop right arcoss the street that took you where ever you wanted for $2.00 a ride or $40.00 a month. Majority of drivers very helpful, great way to see Hawaii and do shopping. Hotel restuarant had a very limited menu, breakfast good, other meals poor. Fortunately there are many other places with reasonable prices and good food around. Bell Man very helpful, arranged for shuttle back to airport for reasonable rate.

Good location, Good value

Carroll, San Francisco, CA, 2006-02-08

Close to beach, shopping and dining.

This was my first stay at this hotel. The staff was very helpful and friendly. We was upgraded to a one bedroom suite at no extra charge. The house cleaning staff was very good and provided us with all the extras that we requested. As our flight home was at 7:30 PM, We wa given a room for showers and dressing, but I did'nt think the half hour that they provided was enough. Other than that, It was an enjoyable stay.

My review of OHANA Waikiki Malia

Anonymous, 2005-09-06

near DFS, ABC stores. located on kuhio and lewers.

i have had problems with bed bugs at the ohana facilities: ohana malia and ohana skycourt malie. both visits, my legs were bitten and have a reaction to the toxin released into the bites. no they're not flea or mosquito bites. only the body parts (legs and feet) covered by the bedsheets were bitten. would recommend to have bed double sheeted and remove blanket and bedspread from room
