During your Honolulu vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor
On December 7, 1941, the USS Arizona, while moored here in Pearl Harbor, was bombed in a Japanese air raid. The 608-foot battleship sank in 9 minutes without firing a shot, taking 1,177 sailors and Marines to their deaths -- and catapulting the United States into World War II.Nobody who visits the memorial will ever forget it. The deck of the ship lies 6 feet below the surface of the sea. Oil still oozes slowly up from the Arizona's engine room to stain the harbor's calm, blue water; some say the ship still weeps for its lost crew. The memorial is a stark white 184-foot rectangle that spans the sunken hull of the ship; it was designed by Alfred Pries, a German architect interned on Sand Island during the war. It contains the ship's bell, recovered from the wreckage, and a shrine room with the names of the dead carved in stone.Today, free U.S. Navy launches take visitors to the Arizona. Try to arrive early at the visitor center (no later than 1:30pm), operated jointly by the National Park Service and the U.S. Navy, to avoid the huge crowds; waits of 1 to 3 hours are common, and they don't take reservations. While you're waiting for the shuttle to take you out to the ship -- you'll be issued a number and time of departure, which you must pick up yourself -- you can explore the interesting museum's personal mementos, photographs, and historic documents. A moving 20-minute film precedes your trip to the ship. Allow a total of at least 4 hours for your visit.Parents, note that baby strollers, baby carriages, and baby backpacks are not allowed in the theater, on the boat, or on the USS Arizona Memorial. All babies must be carried. One last note: Most unfortunately, the USS Arizona Memorial is a high-theft area -- leave your valuables at the hotel.
Makaha Valley Country Club
This beautiful public course offers three tees to choose from. You can probably play your handicap from the middle tee, so for a challenge, you might want to go for the back tee, still a sporting par-69 for the 6,369 yards. The course presents a few challenges along the way: numerous trees and an abundance of water (especially on the 3rd hole, which has a couple of small lakes right at a 90-degree dogleg, followed by a stand of trees). You might want to get an early tee time, as the afternoons in Makaha Valley can get windy. The last hole is a doozy, a 494-yard, par-5 with two 90-degree turns to get up to the green. Facilities include driving range, practice greens, club rental, and clubhouse with restaurant.
Honolulu Zoo
Nobody comes to Hawaii to see an Indian elephant, or African lions and zebras. Right? Wrong. This 43-acre municipal zoo in Waikiki attracts visitors in droves. If you've got kids, allot at least half a day or more. The highlight is the new African Savannah, a 10-acre wild preserve exhibit with more than 40 uncapped African critters roaming around in the open. The zoo also has a rare Hawaiian nene goose, a Hawaiian pig, and mouflon sheep. (Only the goose, an evolved version of the Canadian honker, is considered to be truly Hawaiian; the others are imported from Polynesia, India, and elsewhere.)For a real treat, take the Zoo by Moonlight tour, which offers a rare behind-the-scenes look into the lives of the zoo's nocturnal residents. Tours are offered 2 days before, during, and 2 days after the full moon, from 7 to 9pm; the cost is $7 for adults and $5 for children.

Great location!

Anonymous

There's a Macy's Department Store on the ground level of the hotel. There are also shops in the lobby area.

The Ohana Waikiki Beachcomber is located in the heart of Waikiki and is very convenient to shopping, dining, beaching, and touring. The room itself was plain, but was kept very clean. The worst thing about it was that there were no comfortable chairs to sit in, but since we were out of the room most of the time, it didn't really matter that much. Considering the prime location, it was a good value. Basically, it was a place to sleep and shower, so the missing upscale amenities weren't missed. I'd certainly stay there again.

Friendly and convenient location

Kenneth, San Francisco, CA

Don Ho's show is in the hotel. International Marketplace is next door. Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center is across the street. Waikiki Beach is a block walking distance. Pick up tour busses at doorstep. Rent and drive away cars within blocks.

The Ohana Beachcomer is easy to access from Kalakaua Ave in the heart of Waikiki. Everywhere I went on foot from the hotel I reached in five minues. The lobby is up one flight from the steet and is spacious and quiet for Waikiki. The rooms are simple but clean. I had been upgraded one from the basic rate room, and had a balcony with a partial view of the ocean and mountains. A further upgrade would have given me more of a view from a room higher up. I would recommend the Beachcomer in a Waikiki hotel market that becomes more expensive ever..y year.

One of the Best

Richard, Albany, NY

I have to place the Ohana Waikiki Beachcomber as one of the best hotels on the Island . It was about 100 feet to the beautiful beach access. 100 feet to the International Market Place. 100 feet to the only revolving Restaurant in waikiki for the greatest in sunset dining. It is the only Hotel with one of the great Elvis Presley Blue Hawaiian show and features Don Ho Nightly at the Ohaho Supper club. It caters to the need of its customers, by providing trips to Luau's and any other venture that you seek. Stay at The Ohana Waikiki Beachcomber for the stay of a life time.

Great Service

Marc, San Francisco, CA, 2007-03-12

Everything is within walking distance

I really enjoyed the room and the partial ocean view. I liked the fact that the two rooms I requested were connected by a mid door.. It gave my family and I a chance to stay close... I was disappointed that the Hot tub closed so early... The first time I came to Honolulu, I was able to soak in the hot tub just prior to going to bed, which made for a great nights sleep. I was kinda looking for that same experience.. But, overall the hotel and the staff was great. I would have no problem recommending this Hotel to a friend

My review of OHANA Waikiki Beachcomber

Christian, San Francisco, CA, 2007-02-20

The hotel was in a great area but the room was gross! The staff seemed very unfriendly and the room was small and had a bad odor. The bathroom only had one towel and mold growing on the inside of shower. I will never book this hotel again!

GREAT VALUE

JENNIFER, Louisville, KY, 2007-02-20

RIGHT NEXT DOOR. WHILE YOU ARE HERE MAKE SUDE YOU GO TO THE POLYNESIAN VILLAGE IT IS MODERATLY PRICED AND IT IS AWESOME. THE SWAP MARKET IS RATHER CLOSE AS WELL.

THE OHANA WAIKIKI BEACHCOMBER IS A GREAT VALUE FOR THE MONEY. MANT PEOPLE SPEND HUGE AMOUNTS OF MONEY FOR THEIR HOTEL IN HAWAII BUT ARE HARDLY EVER IN THE ROOM. WE HAD AN OCEAN VIEW ROOM WHIOH IN HAWAII YOU WILL FIND OUT IS ALWAYS A PARTIAL VIEW DUE TO ALL THE HOTELS ON THE BEACH BUT THE VIEW IS STILL VERY BREATH TAKING. AFTER ALL YOU ARE IN HAWAII WITH NICE WEATHER AND PALM TREES. YOU COULD HEAR THE WAVES FROM THE OCEANS FROM OUR ROOM. THE STAFF IS VERY FRIENDLY AND HELPFULL. WE WERE THERE AT CHINESE NEW YEAR SO IT WAS VERY EVENTFULL. THE ONLY NEGATIVE ABOUT THIS HOTEL IS THE ELEVATORS, BUT WHEN YOU ARE AT FULL CAPACITY AND HAVE 25 FLOORSD TO ACCOMODATE THE EVLEFVATORS ARE KIND OF SLOW BUT NOTHING THAT BOTHERS YOU TOO BAD UNLESS YOU ARE ALWAYS IN A RUSH, IF THIS IS YOU HEY YOUR IN HAWAII RELAX!!!!THE LOCATION IS GREAT YOU HAVE THE INTERNATIONAL MARKET PLACE RIGHT NEXT DOOR, TONS OF RESTAURANTS,THE BEACH IS WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE. COACH, LOIUS, PRADA, TIFFANY IS RIGHT UP THE STREET. STAY HERE AND HAVE MORE SPENDING MONEY....WE USED OUR HOTEL ROOM JUST TO SLEEP IN AND THAT WAS THAT.

great location

Get a car and travel the roads around Oa'hu The sights are breath-taking and you can budget your own time on how long to stay. Take the trails to Diamond Head and Waimea falls. Many trails to follow and not one to be disappointed with. If on the trails take along sunscrene and bug repellant.

The Ohana Waikiki Beachcomer was centrally located in down-town Honolulu across the street from Waikiki Beach. The room was small but comfortable and I enjoy the outside deck from the room. There was plenty of storage space for the 3 of us with a large closet and dresser drawers. However there was some dried cerial left on the floor between the dresser and night stand and the carpets were very dirty. The staff was friendly courtious and helpful. The price for hotel parking was expensive but not having to worry about your car made up for the price of parking. The shuttle came by frequently and you could do without a car if needed. Internation Market place was only a block away and shopping in the area was great with many good stores to shop in. Hawaiian Shopping Mall was across the street. Several nice restruants were nearby. Night entertinment could be found close and offered a variety of entertainment. The Hotel offered packages for sight seeing tours and entertainment. Having your own car made this more affortable.

The accommodations were fine. The cafe was only open for breakfast until 1 PM and served a buffet for $12.99. Items on the menu were the same as the buffet and it was not economical to order individual selections off the menu. The buffet had little variation each day.

Great location

Anonymous, Phoenix, AZ, 2006-10-16

The International Market is right next to the hotel. It is open early in the morning until late at night and has clothing, leis, food and just about everything else you associate with a tropical island.

My husband goes to Hawaii for business about 3 times a year. We have stayed at different hotels occasionally, but because of the great location we come back to the Beachcomber. Staying at a lower priced hotel that is just across the street from the beach and next door to the International Market is a huge plus. It is nothing fancy, but totally adequate and the staff were helpful and congenial. The hotel resturant is mediocre food at best, but being in the middle of Waikiki, you have many other options for your meals.
