During your Honolulu vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
USS Missouri Memorial
On the deck of this 58,000-ton battleship (the last one the Navy built), World War II came to an end with the signing of the Japanese surrender on September 2, 1945. The Missouri was part of the force that carried out bombing raids over Tokyo and provided firepower in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. In 1955, the Navy decommissioned the ship and placed it in mothballs at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, in Washington State. But the Missouri was modernized and called back into action in 1986, eventually being deployed in the Persian Gulf War, before retiring once again in 1992. Here it sat until another battle ensued, this time over who would get the right to keep this living legend. Hawaii won that battle and brought the ship to Pearl Harbor in 1998. The next year, the 887-foot ship, like a phoenix, rose again into the public spotlight; it's now open to visitors as a museum memorial. If you have the time, take the tour, which begins at the visitor center. Guests are shuttled to Ford Island on military-style buses while listening to a 1940s-style radio program (complete with news clips, wartime commercials, and music). Once on the ship, guests watch an informational film and are then free to explore on their own or take a guided tour. Highlights of this massive (more than 200 ft. tall) battleship include the forecastle (or foc's'le, in Navy talk), where the 30,000-pound anchors are "dropped" on 1,080 feet of anchor chain; the 16-inch guns (each 65 ft. long and weighing 116 tons), which can accurately fire a 2,700-pound shell some 23 miles in 50 seconds; and the spot where the Instrument of Surrender was signed as Douglas MacArthur, Chester Nimitz, and "Bull" Halsey looked on.
Mission Houses Museum
This museum tells the dramatic story of cultural change in 19th-century Hawaii. American Protestant missionaries established their headquarters here in 1820. Included in the complex are a visitor center and three historic mission buildings, which have been restored and refurnished to reflect the daily life and work of the missionaries.Insider's tip: The best way to see the museum is as part of a walking tour of historic downtown buildings, offered on Thursday and Friday mornings (museum admission is included in the tour price).
Kapiolani Park
In 1877, King David Kalakaua gave 130 acres of land to the people of Hawaii and named it after his beloved wife, Queen Kapiolani. This truly royal park has something for just about everyone: tennis courts, soccer and rugby fields, archery, picnic areas, wide-open spaces for kite flying and Frisbee throwing, and a jogging path with aerobic exercise stations. On Sundays in the summer, the Royal Hawaiian Band plays in the bandstand, just as they did during Kalakaua's reign. The Waikiki Shell, located in the park, is host to a variety of musical events, from old Hawaiian songs to rock and roll.

Close to beach

Sheila, Sacramento, CA

The Aqua Contintental staff was very polite and helpful. Check in and out was very quick and easy. The room was very small but clean with a nice bed shower which always had hot water. Parking was tight but we always found a spot. Loads of shopping and restaurants within walking distance. If you come to Hawaii for the fun and sun this is a perfect place to stay.

1 star hotel in a 5 star neighborhood

Terry, Portland, OR

The beach is a 3 block walk, an outdoor bar under a Banyon tree is another 3 blocks. Dukes 3 more blocks We were picked up 3 blocks from our hotel to go to the Polonisian Cultural Center. St. Augustines Catholic Church is 5 blocks from the hotel, The public transportation system can take you everywhere, and picks up in front of the hotel.

I was looking for a hotel to take my wife. I had an idea OUR first stay in Hawaii, would be full days(into the night), and wanted a safe place to sleep. We aren't the poolside set as much as beach goers. We were greeted promptly, and checked in, and shown our room. The room was Sparten, yet held all we needed, for 5 nights. It was at times crowded in the lobby, and we recognized the same desk attenant still on duty after many hours. She was great at handeling what I would call difficult guests. Overall, if I had known exactly what 5 nights would be like there before I went I would have still made arrangements for accomodations @ AQUA SURF hotel. The Service, location and price is above the rest. It is FUN!

Don't park here it's an extra $30 dollars a day.

It had great location for the beach & main strip. Although this is a very old building with no decor. It only had 50 spaces for parking for their guests. no pool

I was not at all impressed with the hotel or service provided

Anonymous, 2007-02-02

Dining right on Waikki beach was expensive but, very good quality.

The hotel staff was not at all friendly they made it seem like you were more of an inconvenience then anything. We had to ask for towels most days. The maid service told us that they may clean our room the next day, where we come from the bed, garbage, vacumming, and bathroom gets cleaned daily. This hotel had no ammenities. When a hotel does not offer anything, they should at least allow visitors to park in the hotel ramp free of charge. We received complimentary coffee one day and if we wanted coffee additional days we would have to pay for it each day.

Good according to budget

Waikiki beach is just 2 blocks away and Honolulu Zoo is couple of blocks away.

Aqua continental was comfortable, the room was small but it was ok for two of us. I liked the view from the window. Location was perfect and food places were close to the hotel.

Bare, small, step up from a hostel

Anonymous, Seattle, WA, 2006-11-17

The hotel's nearness to Waikiki Beach and all that is offered in that part of Honolulu is the best part of the Aqua Continental Hotel. Maybe on that basis it's a bargain for the money.

The Aqua Continental satisfied our need for a roof over our head for a night while in Honolulu. To start with, the drive-way for the hotel and check-in was not designated, and the garage was locked at the gate, making it difficult to determine if the garage was for the Continental and check-in purposes or for the hotel next door. There was no indication whether street parking was legal or not. While satisfactorily clean the room was extremely small; water in the shower beat down upon us like so many razor blades in tortuous fashion. One elevator in particular, for transporting us from our 19th floor suite (ha,ha!) to the Lobby, triggered my claustrophobia to such an extent I thought seriously about purchasing it for later burial purposes (my own -- in case I didn't survive a trip). Under our door we received a note reminding us of our check out date and time, as if we weren't already counting the hours until check-out. We found this little courtesy to be crass at best, and lacking any measureable degree of professionalism.

Clean sleeping room, then go play

Ed, Portland, OR, 2006-11-05

Public transportation from the bus stop next door is excellent. 4 day pass is only $20.00. They run frequently and late and go to most major tourist attractions.

Aqua Continental is great for the Hawaii visitor who wants a clean bed to sleep in, a clean bathroom, microwave, frig and a clothes closet to hang atire in and stash shopping items prior to going home. If you want to go to Hawaii and sit in a hotel room, this is not the place for you. It is a great place to crash, sleep, then go play elsewhere! It is a 3 minute walk to the central beach, major bus stop next door (this is a biggie when it's raining) and close to good places to eat, drink, dance and shop. I am an active traveler who plays a lot with only sleeping time in the hotel. I give this hotel high marks under that criteria.

Value for your money

Nicklas, Honolulu, HI, 2006-10-05

Try the local food in the food court just 3 minutes from the hotel. Also cheap good food in many small restaurangs in the neigbourhood.

Aqua Continental is a clean, affordable hotel in the center of Waikiki. Rooms with microwave and sink. Great ocean view from my room, which was unexpected. Superb location, three minutes from Waikiki beach. I felt I got great value for my money.I did expect much less than I got. Staff is friendly, but sometimes a little confused, for example regarding parking. No parking spaces available if you return late at night with a valid parking ticket. New aircon unit in my room, which made the room cool and nice. I would recommend this hotel to tourists on a budget.
