During your Honolulu vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Hawaiian Railway
All aboard! This is a train ride back into history. Between 1890 and 1947, the chief mode of transportation for Oahu's sugar mills was the Oahu Railway and Land Co.'s narrow-gauge trains. The line carried not only equipment, raw sugar, and supplies, but also passengers from one side of the island to the other. You can relive those days every Sunday with a 1 1/2-hour narrated ride through Ko Olina Resort and out to Makaha. As an added attraction, on the second Sunday of the month, you can ride on the nearly 100-year-old, custom-built parlor-observation car belonging to Benjamin F. Dillingham, founder of the Oahu Railway and Land Co.; the fare is $15 (no kids under 13), you must reserve in advance.
Mililani Golf Club
This par-72, 6,455-yard public course is home to the Sports Shinko Rainbow Open, where Hawaii's top professionals compete. Located between the Koolau and Waianae mountain ranges on the Leilehua Plateau, this is one of Oahu's most scenic courses, with views of mountains from every hole. Unfortunately, there are also lots of views of trees, especially eucalyptus, Norfolk pine, and coconut palm; it's a lesson in patience to stay on the fairways and away from the trees. The two signature holes, the par-4 number 4 (a classic middle hole with water, flowers, and bunkers) and the par-3 number 12 (a comfortable tee shot over a ravine filled with tropical flowers that jumps to the undulating green with bunkers on each side) are so scenic, you'll forgive the challenges they pose.
Foster Botanical Garden
You could spend days in this unique and historic garden, a leafy oasis amid the high-rises of downtown Honolulu, but your schedule will probably only allow a couple of hours. Combine a tour of the Garden with a trip to Chinatown (just across the street) to maximize your time. The giant trees that tower over the main terrace were planted in the 1850s by William Hillebrand, a German physician and botanist, on royal land leased from Queen Emma. Today, this 14-acre public garden, on the north side of Chinatown, is a living museum of plants, some rare and endangered, collected from the tropical regions of the world. Of special interest are 26 "Exceptional Trees" protected by state law, a large palm collection, a primitive cycad garden, and a hybrid orchid collection.

Nice place for couples

cindi, Minneapolis, MN, 2006-09-04

There is a subway right in the hotel which is very handy and you can walk to downtown very close to dining and downtown shopping.

The rooms are very spacious and had two balconies. It was very nice having a washer and dryer and a kitchen. For the money its the only place we would stay at again for the size and space it was very very nice!

Worst location in waikiki

Anonymous, Los Angeles, CA, 2005-07-03

I would never stay at this hotel again. It was located in the busiest corner of waikiki. It didn't help that the staff was inefficient and unknowledgable (30 minute wait for them to retrieve your car). The worst part is that the waikiki shore doesn't have a front office in the building; A competitor has a desk down there, so they were inwilling to help you at all. The pool was dirty and the food was no good such a pity because Oahu has one of the most consistently delicious cuisines. This hotel was the only negative part of our trip. They could learn a lot about service from the neighboring Hilton Hawaiian Hotel where we stayed last time.

Excellent value for dollar

Robert, Cleveland, OH, 2005-05-12

The Waikiki Shores was immaculate and very well appointed. As a primarily residential condo complex most public areas (pool, restaurants, lounge, etc.) are at it's adjoining neighbor the Outrigger Reef. For us this worked out great with our condo being very quiet and sedate with plenty to do next door. The location is perfect with Fort Derussy on one side with it's large lawn areas. Private access to one of the best sections of Waikiki beach and all the beach activities is right at your door. Assigned parking on the lower level with elevator access is definitely a hard to find asset in Waikiki. We have stayed in this area of Waikiki for years and find Waikiki Shores to be the definite best choice. Staff is very friendly and helpful as at all Outrigger facilities we have stayed at. We were staying at an Outrigger hotel nearby when 9-11 happeden and were very impressed with the way this emergency was handled by the staff in this difficult time. We have already made our reservations for 2 weeks in January. A+ in our book.
