Halekulani

Halekulani has been hosting visitors to Waikiki Beach for nearly 100 years. Today its reputation for gracious hospitality, impeccable service and magnificent cuisine is unequaled on Oahu and renowned throughout the world.

The story of Halekulani begins just after the turn of the 20th century, with the construction of a small hotel consisting of a simple beachfront home and five tiny bungalows. In 1917, Juliet and Clifford Kimball purchased the hotel and gradually expanded the operation, establishing it as a stylish resort for wealthy vacationers. They named it Halekulani, or "House Befitting Heaven."

Halekulani remains faithful to the spirit and tradition of the past while constantly rising to astounding levels of service and comfort. The refurbished Main Building, tastefully preserved and upgraded, still serves as the hotel's primary dining and gathering spot. Today, nearly 100 years after its birth, the living room's skylight still provides a golden glow on the original eucalyptus floors, accentuating the warm feeling and sense of island splendor guests continue to enjoy when staying at the "House Befitting Heaven."

One of Hawaii's most luxurious hotels, Halekulani exhibits grand elegance situated on Waikiki Beach, within walking distance of shops, recreation, restaurants, and Honolulu nightlife one mile from the Hawaii Convention Center. Each superbly appointed room has a spacious balcony with panoramic views.

Award-winning chefs create one-of-a-kind dishes from Hawaii's freshest, most delectable ingredients. Each of Halekulani's three restaurants offers its own distinct style amid stunning views of the sea.

With an uncompromising commitment to your health, Halekulani offers an extensive co-ed fitness room complete with state-of-the-art exercise equipment. Hotel fitness consultants offer regularly-scheduled power stretch/cardio pump workouts, and professional in-room massages can also be arranged through the concierge.

Gray's Beach, which fronts Halekulani, was known to early Hawaiians for its healing waters or Kawehewehe. The healing tradition of this beach continues today with SpaHalekulani, the first spa to fully explore the cultures of the Pacific Islands, including Samoa, Tonga and Tahiti, providing total rejuvenation of the spirit.

In keeping with Halekulani's tradition of serene accommodations and trademark hospitality, SpaHalekulani provides guests with a unique, all-enveloping spa experience. Their goal is to create a new, positive sense of well-being on the outside that also permeates within. The end result is a respite that is cultural, emotional and spiritual, and it is accomplished only through the entire staff's commitment to the tradition of hospitality and timeless grace that is Halekulani.

A full menu of massages, body and facial therapies, and hair and nail care services is available to you. The spa features seven relaxation suites, including two tandem suites for couples, one of which can be transformed into a bridal room. Plus, there are steam showers, therapy beds, personal lockers, private restroom facilities and an outdoor relaxation area.

Whether you are in search of a vacation escape, meeting, wedding or other special event, Halekulani is an oasis famous for gracious hospitality, with service prompt and polished.

During your Honolulu vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Hawaii Country Club
This public course, located in Wahiawa, is a modest course where golfers usually have no trouble getting a tee time. The 5,861-yard, par-71 course is not manicured like the resort courses, but it does offer fair play, with relatively inexpensive greens fees. Located in the middle of former sugarcane and pineapple fields, the greens and fairways tend to be a bit bumpy and there are a number of tall monkeypod and pine trees to shoot around, but the views of Pearl Harbor and Waikiki in the distance are spectacular. There are a few challenging holes, like the seventh (a 252-yard, par-4), which has a lake in the middle of the fairway and slim pickings on either side. With the wind usually blowing in your face, most golfers choose an iron to lay up short of the water and then pitch it over for par. Facilities include a driving range, practice greens, club rental pro shop, and restaurant.
Captain Bob's Adventure Cruises
See the majestic Windward Coast the way it should be seen -- from a boat. Captain Bob will take you on a 4-hour, lazy-day sail of Kaneohe Bay aboard his 42-foot catamaran, which skims across the almost-always calm water above the shallow coral reef, lands at the disappearing sandbar Ahu o Laka, and takes you past two small islands to snorkel spots full of tropical fish and, sometimes, turtles. The color of the water alone is worth the price. This is an all-day affair, but hey, getting out on the water is the reason you came to Hawaii, right? A shuttle will pick you up at your Waikiki hotel between 9 and 9:30am and bring you back at about 4pm -- it's a lot quicker than taking TheBus (no. 55 or 56).
Pearl Country Club
Looking for a challenge? You'll find one at this popular public course, located just above Pearl City in Aiea. Sure, the 6,230-yard, par-72 looks harmless enough, and the views of Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial are gorgeous, but around the fifth hole, you'll start to see what you're in for. That par-5, a blind 472-yard hole, doglegs seriously to the left (with a small margin of error between the tee and the steep out-of-bounds hillside on the entire left side of the fairway). A water hazard and a forest await your next two shots. Suddenly, this nice public course becomes not so nice. Oahu residents can't get enough of it, so don't even try to get a tee time on weekends. Stick to weekdays -- Mondays are usually the best bet. Facilities include a driving range, practice greens, club rental, pro shop, and restaurant.

Beautiful welcome from the hotel

Anonymous, Phoenix, AZ, 2006-11-22

The shopping is fantastic!!!!!

The Halekulani is a beautiful hotel with beautiful rooms, comfortable beds and clean bathrooms. We were welcomed with a beautiful tray of tropical fruits, chocolate and a small souvenir from the hotel upon our arrival. The choice of restaurants was poor. They have 2 very good and expensive restaurant that requires strict dress code. When we go on vacation we like to be able to dress down a little. We did not care for the beach area, very mediocre and the whole neighborhood was under construction. Very noisy. I would not go back mainly because of the beach area.

Friendly but very businesslike

Check out dining at Duke's and other hotels nearby.

I would recommend this hotel to those that are business oriented and socialize little. It is less fitting for gregarious individuals ,families or those with children to entertain. The clientele is primarily upscale Japanese so social conversations by the pool, bar etc are sparse. Not much fun really, but service staff is excellent.
