During your Atlanta vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Fernbank Science Center
Owned and funded by the DeKalb County School System, this museum/planetarium/observatory, located adjacent to the 65-acre Fernbank Forest, is an educational partner of the Fernbank Museum of Natural History. Plan to visit the entire complex on the same day. There's a 1 1/2-mile forest trail here, with trees, shrubs, ferns, wildflowers, mosses, and other plants marked for identification. An extensive rose garden is located next door to the museum. The indoor facility houses exhibits such as a video display on geological phenomena (volcanoes, earthquakes, mountain formation, and so on); a gem collection; an exhibit tracing the development of life in Georgia from 500 million years ago to a million years ago; a complete weather station; fossilized trees; the original Apollo 6 space capsule and space suit (on loan from the Smithsonian); computer games; a replica of the Okefenokee Swamp, complete with sound effects; and models of dinosaurs that roamed Atlanta in prehistoric times. There are planetarium shows, and, at the Observatory, which contains the largest telescope in the world dedicated to public education, an astronomer gives talks and helps visitors to spot celestial objects.
The Hammonds House Galleries & Resource Center of African-American Art
Occupying the 1857 Eastlake Victorian-style former home of Dr. Otis T. Hammonds, a black anesthesiologist and art patron, Hammonds House is a national center for the exhibition, preservation, research, and documentation of African-American art and artists. The permanent collection includes Hammonds' extensive compilation of works by African-American and Haitian artists, as well as his collection of African masks and carvings. These works are complemented by later acquisitions including pieces by Romare Bearden, William H. Johnson, Robert S. Duncanson, and Elizabeth Catlett. The permanent collection is shown on a rotating basis and is supplemented by exhibitions featuring the work of renowned black artists from all over the world. The Resource Center, housing documents on African-American art and artists, is open to the public by appointment. The house is located in the thriving West End neighborhood, which was declared a historic district in 1991. While you're in the area, take a look at the other lovingly restored Victorian bungalows and houses. A short walk away is the Atlanta University Center, the largest historically African-American education complex in the world, home to prestigious Morehouse College. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is Morehouse's most famous alumnus; a chapel was built on the campus to honor his memory.
Center for Puppetry Arts
Don't miss this place if you're traveling with the kids. In fact, you might not want to miss it even without kids in tow. The center is dedicated to expanding public awareness of puppetry as a fine art and to presenting all of its international and historic forms. Opened in 1978, with Kermit the Frog cutting the official ribbon (he had a little help from the late Jim Henson), it contains a 300-seat theater, a smaller theater, gallery space, and a permanent museum. The puppet shows are marvelous -- sophisticated, riveting, full-stage productions with elaborate scenery. Some are family oriented; others, with nighttime showings, are geared to adults. Call ahead to find out what's on; reservations are essential. You can also call a week or so in advance to enroll yourself or your kids in a puppet-making workshop. The center's permanent exhibit, "Puppets, The Power of Wonder," is stunning, featuring one of the largest and finest puppet collections in North America. The exhibit includes such treasures as ritualistic African figures, Punch and Judy, Henson's Pigs in Space, turn-of-the-century Thai shadow puppets, Indonesian wayang golek puppets used to tell classic stories (a centuries-old tradition), Chinese hand puppets, rod-operated marionettes from all over Europe, original Muppets, pre-Colombian clay puppets that were used in religious ceremonies circa A.D. 1200, and Turkish shadow figures made of dried animal skins. Visitors have the opportunity to use joysticks to manipulate over 350 of these puppets. A video hosted by Jim Henson provides an overview of puppetry and takes visitors around the world to meet masters of the art. Another gallery features visiting exhibits from all over the world. Reservations are required for guided tours of "Puppets, The Power of Wonder"; the tour lasts about an hour. The gift shop is like no other, with oodles of marionettes, one-of-a-kind handmade puppets, masks, videos, and other related items.

Love this Hotel

James, Chicago, IL, 2007-03-08

When I got there I just loved everything about it. The decor, people that work there were very friendly. I did't get to eat at the restaurant but are planning on returning with my husband for a weekend visit. The convention center was in walking distance which I really like not have to take a cab to my hotel with all the items I did bring back from the convention center.

Great value boutique hotel

Jacqueline, Miami, FL, 2007-02-06

1. Some excellent restaurants in Atlanta for people who love good food to try that are not far away by car- Rathbun's, Shaun's, Posh. 2. I recommend renting a car if you stay at this hotel. The valet service is very easy and this way you don't have to walk through the so-so neighborhood.

The Glenn Hotel was a great deal for the money- the staff was friendly, the design of the rooms and the lobby was very cool. The bar downstairs served some of the best cocktails we have had and the bartender gave us great tips on where to go in Atlanta. The location is close to tourist spots but not close to good shopping or restaurants.

ideal downtown location

Anonymous, 2006-11-11

CNN center is on the next block. georgia acquarium is like 3 blocks. the coca-cola museum is not far behind.

glenn hotel in downtown atlanta is very ideal if you have a business within the downtown area of atlanta. it is so close to almost everything - convention site, CNN, good restaurants, etc. the room itself is not that big as i expected but still comfy. i would have preferred though that there was a tub in the bathroom.

Not family friendly

Anonymous, Washington, DC, 2006-09-24

The CNN building is right next door with a large food court, shops and the ability to take a tour of the building.

The room itself was satisfactory although the room seemed a bit small. It had a very nice flat screen TV which worked very well. The atmosphere however was awkward. The hotel including lobby, elevator area and hallways were very dark. So dark in fact that it was difficult to make out the room numbers until you were right on top of the room. The room itself had the feel of a brothel. It had tacky bright orange curtains over the windows and the wall between the main part of the room and the bathroom was glass with silver beads hanging down over it. On the other side of the glass was the shower. This made the shower and, in fact the entire bathroom completely visible from anywhere in the main part of the room. This did not effect me directly being the only person in the room, however I would not recommend it for a family.

IKEA!!!

Stayed a Sunday night - loved it - excellent staff - great hotel design - fun rooms - couldn't have been more happy with our stay and the very reasonable price we paid! Definitely find us back there again - I miss the peek-a-boo shower already.

Great location

Caitlin, Washington, DC, 2006-08-01

GWCC, CNN, the aquarium, and the new world of Coke.

There is even a modeling agency on the second floor. The entrance at the Glenn is odd as it is off to the side of the property and not on the main street. The lobby is warm and very comfortable. The lobby bar is unpretentious. I did not go into the hotel restaurant, Bed, but I would imagine that is more of a scene in the evening. The staff was really nice. I tested them a few times as I needed toothpaste, directions to a drug store, and maps that defined the neighborhoods of Atlanta that are referred to everywhere, but mean nothing to me as I'm from DC. The front desk came through every time. The hallways are very dark, to the point that it's difficult to find your room. The room was small, but very comfortable. The bathroom was awesome. I'm a huge fan of the stand up shower sans tub. The water pressure was not good however. I would have liked to seen some better products in the bathroom, ala Bliss or Aveda. I was also wanting for a business center, as I did not bring a laptop on my overnight trip. There isn't one except to go to Kinko's in the convention center. I guess they are offering introductory rates to attract people to what is still a relatively new property. The rate was great! The location is wonderful, close to the GWCC, aquarium, and CNN. This area of town desperately needs some shopping as well as some of the wonderful restaurants that are all a cab ride away. The Glenn is off to the right start. I look forward to staying there again.

Very hip

CNN Center

You feel like you are checking in at a bar, which is not so bad. There are also beds in the bar. The night I stayed there was a party downstairs for "Peach" magazine which they cordially invited me to. Rooms were tastefully and thoughtfully laid out and appointed. I also loved the window from the shower into the bedroom. Very funky if that's what you're into. I liked it.

Trendy place to stay

Tim, 2006-05-10

The CNN center a block away has a whole range of dining choices.

This is the most unique hotel we have stayed at. I wouldn't think that it is catered toward a family as there are peek-a-boo showers in the room. An excellent choice and we will definitely stay at The Glenn again.

Beauty and Comfort Awaits You

Karen, 2006-04-01

This was the most beautiful and comfortable hotel I had ever stayed in. I felt absolutely spoiled by the amenities which included a plasma/HDTV, plenty of free refreshments, and toiletry items. The staff were exceptionally friendly and I slept so comfortably on the bed under the superior quality comforter. All of the furnishings, including the lamps, headboard, curtains etc. were simply gorgeous. I'm trying to think of an excuse to get back quickly.
