During your Atlanta vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
William Breman Jewish Heritage Museum
This museum, the largest of its kind in the Southeast, offers a unique glimpse into Atlanta's history, exploring Jewish heritage with a special emphasis on the Atlanta Jewish experience. Two main galleries juxtapose the destruction of the Holocaust with the re-emergence of Jewish communities in Atlanta and throughout the world. The stories are told through photographs, documents, and memorabilia uncovered in the attics and basements of local families and individuals. Especially moving are the stories and possessions generously shared by Holocaust survivors living in Atlanta. In addition to the two main galleries, there's a Discovery Center with hands-on activities related to the exhibitions, a community archive, a genealogy center, a library, and a gift shop.
Centennial Olympic Park
Centennial Olympic Park, one of the most enduring legacies of the 1996 Olympic Games, is a living monument to the city's memories -- both good and bad -- of that seminal event. Conceived as a town square, it represents the heart of the Olympic effort, the site where everyone flocked to celebrate the games. And when the games resumed after the bombing in the park that claimed two lives, it was where people gathered to try to revive the Olympic spirit.A 21-acre swath of green space and bricks, the park was carved out of a blighted downtown area. It was closed after the games and redesigned for permanent use before reopening in 1998. Once again the universal gathering place it was intended to be, it's an oasis of rolling lawns crisscrossed by brick pathways and punctuated by artwork, rock gardens, pools, and fountains. There are usually a few free events each month -- festivals, artists' markets, and concerts and other performances. Call for a complete listing of happenings. If you're visiting the park on your own, and not coming for a specific event, your first stop should be the visitor center on International Boulevard, in the southwest corner of the park, across from the CNN Center. This is where you'll find information about the park. If you bought a $35 commemorative brick in 1996, someone will help you locate it among the nearly 500,000 engraved bricks that were used to pave the plaza and walkways. Even if you didn't buy a brick, it's fun to wander around and read the names and messages (some pretty intriguing) engraved on them. The best part of the park is the fountain in the shape of the five interlocking Olympic Rings. It's the focus of a vast paved plaza bordered by 23 flags honoring all the host countries of the modern Games. If you're here in summer, you and the kids can frolic in the fountain (wear shirts and shoes, please), a good way to cool off in the sizzling Southern heat. Don't be shy-just about everybody in Atlanta has done this at one time or another. If getting drenched is not your thing, you can still enjoy one of the "concerts" put on by the fountains-timed water and light displays accompany seven different songs. The water jets, which normally shoot 12 feet into the air, can reach 35 feet during special effects.Located along the east border are the Quilt Plazas, five plazas of contrasting bricks that tell the story of the Centennial Olympic Games. The best "quilt" is also the most moving. Titled the Quilt of Remembrance, it pays respect to the bombing victims and contains colored marble from five continents. Be sure to read the inscriptions on its borders.Pricey Park Land--If you really, really, really had a good time at Centennial Olympic Park, you can have it all to yourself for a small fee. Though it's a public park, it's also a moneymaker managed by the Georgia World Congress Center, and parts of the park are sometimes rented for various business functions, parties, or other celebrations. There have even been a few weddings. You can rent the entire park for, um, $10,000. Call tel. 404/222-7275 for details.
Yellow River Game Ranch
Bordering the Yellow River, this 24-acre animal preserve offers close encounters of the 4-legged kind -- a chance to view, pet, feed, and generally mingle with some 600 animals (always including quite a few babies) who live in open enclosures or right out in the open, along a 1-mile oak- and hickory-shaded forest trail. Owner Art Rilling knows every animal on the ranch by name and can give you chapter and verse on each one's personality, preferences, and in some cases, romantic history. The animals know they're among friends here and are highly socialized, so you have a unique chance to study them up close. Keep in mind that all these animals smell like, well, animals. If a barnyard atmosphere bothers you, don't visit.Inhabitants include donkeys named Rhett and Scarlett, Georgia black bears that stand up and beg for marshmallows, goats, dozens of rabbits in Bunny Burrows (kids can pet the bunnies), an assortment of interesting-looking chickens, a herd of buffalo, sheep, burros, goats, ponies, a skunk named General Sherman (we are in Atlanta, after all), and a groundhog named General Beauregard Lee who lives in a white colonnaded Southern mansion complete with miniature satellite dish.Consider packing a picnic lunch. There are tables throughout the property, and one especially nice picnic area overlooks the river.

Great location

Jenny, 2007-02-28

I was in Atlanta to see a concert at Phillips Arena and it was only 5 blocks away. All the CNN stuff is right next door too so that was a short walk too!!

Castleberry Inn was in the perfect location. 4 or 5 blocks from the Dome and Phillips Arena. The staff was very friendly-paid special attention to me when I needed directions to 4 places around town. The price was right too!! The room was very clean and I loved the fact that it had a small fridge and microwave too.

Great Value for Georgia Dome !

Ernie, Lynchburg, VA, 2006-12-31

Free parking at hotel !!! With parking going for $60 a car around the Dome, this was a tremendous value. Hotel not the best. Room was cramped. But if you are going for a Georgia Dome game, this is a steal. 1/2 mile from Dome. Safe walk with others walking same direction. Overall bargain. Paschals has great food also !!

Questionable Stay

Anonymous, 2006-11-03

The Castleberry Inn is located in a marginal neighborhood which is being developed with loft space but is limited in activity right now. The Staff was friendly and competent but hotel security was non-existent and at night street people would enter the hotel and watch a tv that is constantly on in the small workout room off the lobby. The hotel is a full mile from the Georgia World Congress convention center and I would not recommend walking back to the hotel after dark. There were few stores or facilities near the hotel so it was necessary to take a taxi or public transportation for any services or entertainment. The room was one of the most poorly designed hotel rooms I've ever seen. The bathroom door could only be opened halfway before hitting the bed. The room was billed as a "kitchenette" because it had a microwave and a kitchen sink - this kitchen sink was the only one in the room - no sink in the bathroom so I found myself shaving and washing my face in a kitchen sink with poor light. The room had an overpowering smell of disinfectant which you can get used to but doesn't make for much comfort. With no place to walk to comfortably and an odd, cramped room I was not thrilled with the experience.

Minimal

Eric, Salt Lake City, UT, 2006-09-04

The Castleberry Inn has very small rooms and bathrooms. In my room, the carpet was peeling up, which made me wonder about the maintainance. The pillowcases had some slight stains. But there's free wi-fi, and the front desk staff were helpful and friendly.

Don't have any expectations!

Volkhard, Tampa, FL, 2006-08-26

A neighborhood where you don't want to walk after dark. The rooms are very small (we upgraded to their Queen-room!).The pillows (2 for 2 people) where extremly thin ($3.00 walmart quality) and our request for extra pillows where not granted. On the second day, after a long day on a convention, there were no towles in the room. It took them over an hour to get us towles and the attitude was like they did us a big favor! The carpet has not been vacuumed once while we were there. We tried to get breakfast at the adjacent restaurant on our first morning but at 7:00am they didn't have much to offer. While sipping our coffee out of plastic cups we saw 2 coakroaches running accross the floor ... needless to say we haven't been back for breakfast or dinner. For our next stay in Atlanta it will not be the Castleberry Inn!

Best hotel that I have stayed in for the money.

Anonymous, Miami, FL, 2006-08-25

You've got to go to Paschal's. The food is great but the Staff is amazing.

Great hotel if you are on a budget or if you're only planning on sleeping. The Staff is very friendly. Don't forget to visit Paschal Restaurant-literally steps from the hotel.
