During your Atlanta vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
The APEX (African-American Panoramic Experience) Museum
This museum chronicles the history of Sweet Auburn, once Atlanta's foremost black residential and business district, and serves as a national African-American museum and cultural center. The museum's Trolley Car Theater, a replica of a turn-of-the-century tram that ran on Auburn Avenue, presents a 12-minute multimedia presentation, Sweet Auburn: Street of Pride, that acquaints visitors with the area's history. Sweet Auburn history also comes to life in tableaux such as a replica of an Auburn Avenue barbershop and a re-creation of the 1920s-era Yates & Milton's Drugstore (Atlanta's first black pharmacy), featuring some original furnishings. There are interactive displays for children. The APEX recently added a tribute to the late Maynard Holbrook Jackson, Jr., Atlanta's first black mayor. Inquire about special events and workshops taking place during your visit to Atlanta.Across the street from the APEX Museum, at 100 Auburn Ave., is Herndon Plaza, where you can see a permanent exhibit on the Herndon family (former slave Alonzo F. Herndon founded the Atlanta Life Insurance Company), and changing shows featuring the works of African-American artists.
The Herndon Home
Alonzo Herndon was born in 1858, during the last decade of slavery. After emancipation, he worked as a field hand and sharecropper, supplementing his meager income by selling peanuts, homemade molasses, and axle grease. He arrived in Atlanta in the early 1880s, taking on work as a barber and eventually owning several barbershops of his own. Herndon used the earnings from these shops to acquire Atlanta real estate, and by 1900, less than 40 years out of slavery and with only a year of formal education, he was the richest black man in Atlanta. In 1905, Herndon purchased a church burial association, which, with other small companies, became the nucleus of the Atlanta Life Insurance Company, today the nation's second-largest black-owned insurance company. In 1910, Herndon built this elegant 15-room house in the Beaux Arts-neoclassical style, complete with a stately colonnaded entrance. Herndon and his wife, Adrienne McNeil, a drama teacher at Atlanta University, were the primary architects of the house, and construction was accomplished almost completely by African-American artisans. Because their son Norris occupied the home until 1977, much of the original furniture remains, and there are family photographs throughout. Adrienne died about a week after the house was completed. The house tour begins in a receiving room with a 10-minute introductory video called The Herndon Legacy. The tour then takes you through the reception hall; the music room, with rococo gilt-trimmed walls and Louis XV-style furnishings; the living room, with a frieze on its walls depicting the accomplishments of Herndon's life; the dining room, furnished in late Renaissance style with family china and Venetian glass displayed in a mahogany cabinet; the butler's pantry; and the sunny breakfast room. Upstairs, you'll see the bedroom used by Herndon's second wife Jessie, with its Jacobean suite and Louis XV-style furnishings; Herndon's Empire-furnished bedroom, where a book from a Republican National Convention is displayed on a table, letting you know his political bent; the collection room (Norris collected ancient Greek and Roman vases and funerary objects); Norris's bedroom; a sitting room; and a guest bedroom.
Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site
Under the auspices of the National Park Service, this area of about 2 blocks around Auburn Avenue was established to preserve the birthplace and boyhood surroundings of the nation's foremost civil rights leader. Designated a National Historic Site, these blocks include King's boyhood home and the Ebenezer Baptist Church, where King's father and grandfather were ministers and King served as a co-pastor. Free tours of King's birth home start at Fire Station No. 6, which was recently restored by the NPS; tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis at the National Parks Service Visitor Center, 450 Auburn Ave.Other Auburn Avenue attractions, not under NPS auspices, include The King Center, where King is buried (see the previous listing), and the APEX Museum. Several more surrounding blocks have been designated as a preservation district. This area is known as Sweet Auburn. John Wesley Dobbs, maternal grandfather of former Atlanta mayor Maynard Jackson, is the person who first called it such, after Oliver Goldsmith's The Deserted Village, the first line of which reads, "Sweet Auburn! loveliest village of the plains." Mayor Jackson says his grandfather called the area "sweet" because the keys to black liberation existed here in the form of "the three b's -- bucks, ballots, and books."There is a visitor center at 450 Auburn Ave., across from the King Center. It provides a complete orientation to area attractions and includes a theater for audiovisual and interpretive programs, interactive exhibits, and a bookstore. The visitor center is fronted by a beautifully landscaped plaza with a reflecting pool, King's crypt (which his wife had returned to the site several years ago), and an outdoor amphitheater for National Park Service programs.

Great location

Jenny, 2007-02-28

I was in Atlanta to see a concert at Phillips Arena and it was only 5 blocks away. All the CNN stuff is right next door too so that was a short walk too!!

Castleberry Inn was in the perfect location. 4 or 5 blocks from the Dome and Phillips Arena. The staff was very friendly-paid special attention to me when I needed directions to 4 places around town. The price was right too!! The room was very clean and I loved the fact that it had a small fridge and microwave too.

Great Value for Georgia Dome !

Ernie, Lynchburg, VA, 2006-12-31

Free parking at hotel !!! With parking going for $60 a car around the Dome, this was a tremendous value. Hotel not the best. Room was cramped. But if you are going for a Georgia Dome game, this is a steal. 1/2 mile from Dome. Safe walk with others walking same direction. Overall bargain. Paschals has great food also !!

Questionable Stay

Anonymous, 2006-11-03

The Castleberry Inn is located in a marginal neighborhood which is being developed with loft space but is limited in activity right now. The Staff was friendly and competent but hotel security was non-existent and at night street people would enter the hotel and watch a tv that is constantly on in the small workout room off the lobby. The hotel is a full mile from the Georgia World Congress convention center and I would not recommend walking back to the hotel after dark. There were few stores or facilities near the hotel so it was necessary to take a taxi or public transportation for any services or entertainment. The room was one of the most poorly designed hotel rooms I've ever seen. The bathroom door could only be opened halfway before hitting the bed. The room was billed as a "kitchenette" because it had a microwave and a kitchen sink - this kitchen sink was the only one in the room - no sink in the bathroom so I found myself shaving and washing my face in a kitchen sink with poor light. The room had an overpowering smell of disinfectant which you can get used to but doesn't make for much comfort. With no place to walk to comfortably and an odd, cramped room I was not thrilled with the experience.

Minimal

Eric, Salt Lake City, UT, 2006-09-04

The Castleberry Inn has very small rooms and bathrooms. In my room, the carpet was peeling up, which made me wonder about the maintainance. The pillowcases had some slight stains. But there's free wi-fi, and the front desk staff were helpful and friendly.

Don't have any expectations!

Volkhard, Tampa, FL, 2006-08-26

A neighborhood where you don't want to walk after dark. The rooms are very small (we upgraded to their Queen-room!).The pillows (2 for 2 people) where extremly thin ($3.00 walmart quality) and our request for extra pillows where not granted. On the second day, after a long day on a convention, there were no towles in the room. It took them over an hour to get us towles and the attitude was like they did us a big favor! The carpet has not been vacuumed once while we were there. We tried to get breakfast at the adjacent restaurant on our first morning but at 7:00am they didn't have much to offer. While sipping our coffee out of plastic cups we saw 2 coakroaches running accross the floor ... needless to say we haven't been back for breakfast or dinner. For our next stay in Atlanta it will not be the Castleberry Inn!

Best hotel that I have stayed in for the money.

Anonymous, Miami, FL, 2006-08-25

You've got to go to Paschal's. The food is great but the Staff is amazing.

Great hotel if you are on a budget or if you're only planning on sleeping. The Staff is very friendly. Don't forget to visit Paschal Restaurant-literally steps from the hotel.
