Most recent user reviewsScore 2 out of 5 My review of Long Bay Beach Resort and Villas Anonymous, Chicago, IL Sebastians and Sugar Mill are very good restaurants a short cab ride away.Youll love Long Bay it if you enjoy lazy days sitting under a palm tree on a beautiful beach with rolling surf. Youll love it if you want to be on a remote part of the island within walking distance to nothing. But come with low expectations of the staff and even lower expectation of the restaurant. The pool is very nice, as are the tennis courts, but the real attraction if the gorgeous beach. The resort is largely built on the side of a steep hill, meaning a difficult climb (or drive) to rooms. If you dont like climbing, opt for the much more expensive beachfront rooms. The hotel is located at the opposite end of the island from the airport, so its a $40 taxi ride each way. Some very steep hills make walking to a store, restaurant or attraction next to impossible. The facility is, to be kind, rather tired. Landscaping and lawns are poorly tended. The food at the hotel restaurant is mediocre at best, and expensive. A simple plate of ala carte pasta is $24.50 plus service. An overcooked and dry piece of lobster with a baked potato was $34.50. No salad, no bread. The facility and grounds are expansive but the nearest off-property restaurant is a $9 (each way) cab ride away. Shopping, such as it is, is in Road Town, an $18.00 cab ride away. We spent over $300 in taxi fares over seven days. The hotel staff does a passable job, but needs training in terms of making guests feel welcome, or even a little bit pampered. Their motto seems to be service without a smile. Rooms are comfortable and well equipped. Housekeeping and maintenance services were very good It is clear that the British Virgin Islands are a mecca for sailors, but they lack the infrastructure to accommodate tourists looking for the usual first class amenities and proximity to attractions. Long Bay Beach is well suited for a stay of a few days. A weeks stay within the confines of the resort is much too long. This may be one of the better resorts on Tortola, but it doesnt measure up to world class standards Score 5 out of 5 Review Anonymous, Denver, CO No review provided by user Score 5 out of 5 Comfortable & Relaxing John, Durham/Raleigh, NC Sugar Mill is a great resturant nearby.Very pleasant place. Clean room, grounds, and facilities. Staff at all levels genuinely friendly and courteous. I would stay there again. Bed in villa was very low to the floor and might be a problem to someone with mobility issues, but not a problem to most people. I liked the entire resort and beach. Score 5 out of 5 Great Place to Relax Martha 1. The beach was nearby. 2. A couple of restaurants and shops were within walking distance. 3. To go anyplace else you needed a cab or rental car.The Long Bay Beach Resort was very relaxing. Although our room was a little bit of a hike uphill (good exercise) the room itself was spacious and had a great balcony overlooking the property's lush landscape and the ocean. The shower/bathtub also functioned as a jacuzzi. In addition, our room was situated as such that from the balcony we had complete privacy. We were about 5 minutes from the beach. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The only downside was that the restaurants were opened on certain days, 2-3 days/weeks and men were required to wear pants. But there were a couple of other restaurants within walking distance outside of the resort. Score 5 out of 5 Awesome view, nice people! terri, Los Angeles, CA secluded from everything....beautiful beaches.Everything was wonderful. Very personalized service every time. Score 4 out of 5 location is great, service is unfriendly Sandra, Charlotte, NC, 2007-03-01 Dining at Longbay was expensive and it was nothing special. There is a nearby restaurant that doesn't look like much but was fabulous and cheap. It's called Coco Plums. We arrived in Tortola without our luggage so our trip started off on a minor note. We arrived at the hotel after the 45 minute taxi ride from the airport. The staff is not very friendly or helpful at this resort, at all. We went to our room and left the next day to find the ferry that would take us from Tortola to St. Thomas so that we could buy some clothes. Again, no one told us how this works (taking the ferry that is) so we had to wing it. Needless to say, I called later the next night to check on our luggage and they said they left a message at the front desk that our luggage had arrived and they would be sending it the next morning. The front desk never told us. The next night we found our luggage sitting in the lobby. NO one told us about it. They won't let you use their phone to find a car, nor will they help you out very much. Even when we checked out, they didn't ask us how we liked our stay, they never said come back again, nothing. Customer Service is lacking significantly in this resort and we heard this from multiple guests. I guess if you want to visit paradise, you have to put up with it. The island was beautiful, the people could use something to make them smile. NO one smiles here. It's like they don't want you there. Score 5 out of 5 Very family friendly Angie, 2007-02-19 The villa far exceeded my expectations. It was large and comfortable with a beautiful view. The only draw back was the steep climb to the hillside. The food at the 1748 Beach Cafe was so so. The food at the Palm Terrace was excellent. I can not say enough about the staff. They were all very friendly and eager to help make dining reservations, travel arrangements, etc. We arrived on the last flight in and the restaraunts were closed, so the staff met us with punch, sandwiches and fruit. This set the tone for the rest of our stay. They were just super. It is unquestionably the nicest beach on the island. We stayed at the Long Bay for one week at the end of January. Our first room had a wonderful view, a kitchenette and was very comfortable and clean. Members of our party in another room were dissatsified with our accomodations (Oceanview Deluxe) because there was some noise early in the morning due to construction going on below us. There was also an unpleasant but transient smell of sewage that wafted by the room periodically. It sounds gross, but it wasn't that bad. Nonetheless, management moved us to an beachfront cabana at no extra cost and that view was spectacular. I felt the staff at the desk were helpful and very professional. The pool was lovely and overall the property was nicely maintained but could use some sprucing up being that that the hotel is billed as the the premier hotel in Tortola. I am happy to say that the Long Bay is a lovely place to stay. |
