Iran Restaurant (The)
Persian food is at its best at this simply elegant Edgware Road restaurant. Try the halim bademjon starter of aubergine with traditional dried yoghurt, mint and olives or the ashrestehteh noodle soup. The meat and rice dishes are delicious, and the salmon kebab marinated in garlic, coriander and chilli is wonderful. If you feel like splurging, go for the famed Iranian caviar. The Iran Restaurant is a fairly formal place, particularly when compared to the other restaurants on this street. The walls are covered with fine historical art and there's a baby grand piano in this relatively small dining room. The staff are friendly but reserved. Despite the sense of formality, prices are low and cuisine generous.

Axis Restaurant & Bar
This busy, modern and fun restaurant and bar in the basement of the smart One Aldwych hotel has a striking 1930s feel with its muted colours and huge, double-height mural. Impressive modern British cuisine, injected with Eastern influences, is the order of the day: Warm Potato Terrine with balsamic onion dressing and fresh truffles, Japanese Saikyo Cod with udon noodles, ginger shoot, pumpkin and dashi, Hay-baked Leg of Lamb with clapshot potatoes, organic salmon with pea risotto. And the puddings are to-die-for and the Truffle and the Hot Chocolate Soufflé come out as clear favourites. You can also choose from set menus at lunch, either two courses or the three courses.

Osteria 57 (L')
A regular hub for professionals like solicitors, media people, and businessmen, this restaurant is a neighborhood favorite. The cuisine is a blend of Italian and French flavours, which make for a wholesome and delicious meal. Calzone (folded pizza, ham, mushrooms and artichokes), Linguine alla Scoglio, unique seafood pizzas, and fresh pasta are some of the dishes that feature on the menu. You also have the option of choosing your own pizza toppings, but then don't go blaming the chef if you don't like what you end up with!
