During your Tampa vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Busch Gardens Tampa Bay
Although its heart-stopping thrill rides get much of the ink, this venerable theme park (it predates Disney World) ranks among the largest zoos in the country. It's a don't-miss attraction for children and adults, who can see, in person, all those wild beasts they've watched on Animal Planet -- and they'll get better views of them here than at Disney's Animal Kingdom in Orlando. Busch Gardens has several thousand animals living in naturalistic environments that help carry out the park's overall African theme. Most authentic is the 80-acre plain, strongly reminiscent of the real Serengeti of Tanzania and Kenya, upon which zebras, giraffes, and other animals graze. Unlike the animals on the real Serengeti, however, these grazing creatures have nothing to fear from lions, hyenas, crocodiles, and other predators, which are confined to enclosures -- as are the hippos and elephants. The park's sixth and newest roller coaster, SheiKra, is the nation's first dive coaster that carries riders up 200 feet at 45 degrees and then hurtles them 70 mph back at a 45-degree angle. Yikes. The park has eight areas, each with its own theme, animals, live entertainment, thrill rides, kiddie attractions, dining, and shopping. A Skyride cable car soars over the park, offering a bird's-eye view of it all. Turn left after the main gate and head to Morocco, a walled city with exotic architecture, crafts demonstrations, a sultan's tent with snake charmers, and an exhibit featuring alligators and turtles. The Moorish-style Moroccan Palace Theater features an ice show which many families consider to be the park's best entertainment for both adults and children. You can also attend a song-and-dance show in the Marrakech Theater. Overlooking it all is the Crown Colony Restaurant, the park's largest. After watching the snake charmers, walk east past Anheuser-Busch's fabled Clydesdale horses to Egypt, where you can visit King Tut's tomb with its replicas of the real treasures and listen to comedian Martin Short narrate "Akbar's Adventure Tours," a wacky simulator that "transports" one and all across Egypt via camel, biplane, and mine car. The whole room moves on this ride, which lasts only 5 minutes -- much less time than the usual wait to get inside. Youngsters can dig for their own ancient treasures in a sand area. Adults and kids 54 inches or taller can ride Montu, the tallest and longest inverted roller coaster in the world, with seven upside-down loops. Your feet dangle loose on Montu, so make sure your shoes are tied tightly and your lunch has had time to digest. If you're going to Orlando as well, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is included in the five-park version of the FlexTicket, a 14-day pass that also admits you to Universal Studios Florida, SeaWorld, Islands of Adventure, and Wet 'n' Wild, for $225 adults and $190 children 3 to 9.From Egypt, walk to the Edge of Africa, the most unique of the park's eight areas, and home of most of the large animals. Go immediately to the Expedition Africa Gift Shop and see if you can get on one of the park's zoologist-led wildlife tours.Next stop is Nairobi, the most beautiful part of the park, where you can see gorillas and chimpanzees in their lush rainforest habitat in the Myombe Reserve. Nairobi also has a baby-animal nursery, a petting zoo, turtle and reptile displays, an elephant exhibit (alas, the magnificent creatures seem to be bored to the point of madness), and Curiosity Caverns, where bats, reptiles, and small mammals that are active in the dark are kept in cages (it's the most traditional zoolike area here). The entry to Rhino Rally, the park's safari adventure, is at the western end of Nairobi. Now head to The Congo, where the highlights are the rare white Bengal tigers that live on Claw Island. The Congo is also home to two roller coasters: Kumba, the largest and fastest coaster in the southeastern United States (54-in. minimum height); and the Python (48-in. minimum), which twists and turns for 1,200 feet. You will get drenched -- and refreshed on a hot day -- by riding the Congo River Rapids, where you're turned loose in round boats that float down the swiftly flowing "river" (42-in. minimum). Bumper cars and kiddie rides can be found here, too. From The Congo, walk south into Stanleyville, a prototype African village, with a shopping bazaar, orangutans living on an island, and the Stanleyville Theater, usually featuring shows for children. Two more water rides here are the Tanganyika Tidal Wave (48-in. minimum height), where you'll come to a very damp end; and the Stanley Falls Flume (an aquatic version of a roller coaster). Also here is the picnic-style Stanleyville Smokehouse, serving ribs and chicken that are among the best chow in the park.Up next is Land of the Dragons, the most entertaining area for small children. They can spend an entire day enjoying a variety of play elements in a fairy-tale setting, plus just-for-kids rides. The area is dominated by Dumphrey, a whimsical dragon who interacts with visitors and guides children around a three-story treehouse with winding stairways, tall towers, stepping stones, illuminated water geysers, and an echo chamber. The next stop is Bird Gardens, the park's original core, offering rich foliage, lagoons, and a free-flight aviary for hundreds of exotic birds, including golden and American bald eagles. Be sure to see the Florida flamingos and Australian koalas while you're here. Then you're off to take a break at the Hospitality House, which offers piano entertainment and free samples of Anheuser-Busch's famous beers. You must be 21 to imbibe (there's a limit of two free mugs per seating), but soft drinks are also available. If your stomach can take another hair-raising ride, try Gwazi (48-in. minimum), an adrenaline-pumping attraction in which a pair of old-fashioned wooden roller coasters (named the Lion and the Tiger) start simultaneously and whiz within a few feet of each other six times as they roar along at 50 mph and rise to 90 feet. In Gwazi's "Water Wars," participants shoot water-filled balloons at each other with big slingshots. It's a soaking way to end your visit. If you want to experience the park's fifth roller coaster, head to Timbuktu and climb aboard the Scorpion, a high-speed number with a 60-foot drop and 360-degree loop (42-in. height minimum).Added attractions are a $325, 6-hour zookeeper-for-a-day program, the devotion of 26 acres of the 65-acre Serengeti Plain to free-roaming white rhinos, and a 4-D multisensory R. L. Stine film. You can exchange foreign currency in the park, and interpreters are available.Note: You can get to Busch Gardens from Orlando via shuttle buses, which pick up at area hotels between 8 and 10:15am for the 1 1/2- to 2-hour ride, with return trips starting at 5pm and continuing until the park closes. Round-trip fares are $5 per person. Call tel. 800/511-2450 for schedules, pickup locations, and reservations.Note: Admission and hours vary so call ahead, check website, or get brochure at visitor centers. If You Need Another Day--Once you're inside Busch Gardens Tampa Bay and decide you really need more time to see it all, check to see if the park has (frequently offered) Next-Day Tickets, which let you back in the next day for about $16 per person.
Henry B. Plant Museum
Originally built in 1891 by railroad tycoon Henry B. Plant as the super-chichi 511-room Tampa Bay Hotel, this ornate building is worth a short trip across the river from downtown to the University of Tampa campus. Its 13 silver minarets and distinctive Moorish architecture, modeled after the Alhambra in Spain, make this National Historic Landmark a focal point of the Tampa skyline. Although the building is the highlight of a visit, don't skip its contents: art and furnishings from Europe and Asia, plus exhibits that explain the history of the original railroad resort, Florida's early tourist industry, and the hotel's role as a staging point for Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War.
Adventure Island
If the summer heat gets to you before one of Tampa's famous thunderstorms brings late-afternoon relief, you can take a waterlogged break at this 25-acre outdoor water theme park near Busch Gardens Tampa Bay . You can also frolic here during the cooler days of spring and fall, when the water is heated. The Key West Rapids, Tampa Typhoon, Gulf Scream, and other exciting water rides will drench the teens, while other, calmer rides are geared toward younger kids. Wahoo Run plunges up to five riders more than 15 feet per second as the half-enclosed tunnel corkscrews more than 600 feet to a waiting splash pool. There are also places to picnic and sunbathe, an arcade, a volleyball complex, and an outdoor cafe. Although some people tend to go barefoot here, I suggest you wear shoes at all times -- it gets kind of nasty after a while.

Good for business traveler

peter, Newport News, VA, 2007-03-06

The hotel is very clean and has a nice view of Tampa Bay. I was impressed with the fitness center and walking path to the water. I was somewhat disappointed with the in-hotel restaurant selection. The only option for dining I found after about 8 PM was the hotel bar. I could get a meal, but it wasn't the best atmosphere. There is what looks like a nice restaurant just off-site affiliated with the hotel, but not the type of place I'm looking for when I'm by myself on a business trip. Overall, if you are planning to go out for dinner, I'd recommend the hotel.

Great Hotel all around!

Jennie, Bangor, ME, 2007-02-26

The Malls of Tampa offer a variety of eating establishments, even the good old stand by: McDonald's. There are a few places that will deliver to the Hotel ( pizza etc.) but be warned that most won't deliver between 4-7pm because of the traffic.

The check in staff at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay was pleasant and helpful, the room service, bell hop,and cleaning service very efficient and polite. This Hotel is beautiful, and the boardwalk on the property was lots of fun for my 5 year old. The pool was a favorite of hers! The proximity to the airport was a deciding factor for me, it's only 10 minutes away and very easy to find. The malls of Tampa ( the malls offer many more restaurants and theaters) aren't very far and Clearwater Beach is only 1/2 hour-45 minutes away( with moderate traffic). Busch Gardens was easy to find, and on the way there you pass the exit for the Lowry Park Zoo....BOTH are excellent places to bring your kids!!! My 5 year old had a great time! The rooms were great! Get a bay view room if you can, because the sunsets are worth it...beds were extremely comfortable, and the bathroom was good sized and CLEAN. The are two restaurants in the main hotel Armani's( italian cuisine) and Petey Brown's... we didn't sample Armani's but, Petey Brown's, although slightly pricey at times had great food and excellent service. There is also Oyster Catcher's on the adjoining property. We stayed during a convention, and even though there were quite a lot of people there we weren't disturbed in anyway. We didn't take advantage of the health club facilities, but heard good things about it... I would recommend this hotel to anyone....the price is a little more pricey, but to me it was worth it to have the security, the ammenities and the service to make my stay the best possible. Definitely make reservations in advance though, and beware of the mini bar.....the prices even on the bottles of water were outrageous! If there were one thing I wish the room had that it DIDN'T, it would be a refridgerator ( with a small child it helps to have the milk/cereal and snacks on hand and we had to keep our breakfast milk in the ice bucket---not a terrible inconvenience but still).

nice hotel, friendly staff and great view!

Better to rent a car from the hotel and that way you can go where you want to. We found out that everything you want to do outside the hotel, you need a taxi or shuttle. There is no walking to anything as this hotel is in the middle of nowhere.

Hotel room was more than expected! Great view of bay, large king bed that was extra comfortable (except for very soft pillows), nice office area and the bathroom was beautiful. Hotel staff, especially front desk, were very nice and helpful. We had a horrible start to our holiday (the airline ended up cancelling two of our flights which we ended up being 24 hours later than expected and then ended up losing our luggage) but the hotel staff, right away, helped us with finding our luggage, giving us toothpaste and such and giving us directions to the closet mall and Walgreens. Very helpful and we were very happy after such a long day to get such great service. I wasn't very happy with the dining choices. We ended up eating at the same place for all meals. Not that it wasn't a nice restaurant but there should have been somewhere that was cheaper. We paid 30.00 for breakfast both days which was a little much for people that normally don't eat breakfast. There is a nice restaurant on the top level, but beware it's not open on Sundays (we left it to a Sunday and we're dissapointed that it was closed) and there is also a restaurant at the resort part of the hotel, overlooking the bay, that is for seafood lovers. We did find a little cafe, on our last day, that serves food at the business building on the property. I'm not sure if you need to work there to get the food but it's worth a try. The area of the hotel was okay. It was out in the middle of no where though, the airplanes took off right over the hotel and there was construction right outside(they are fixing the roads). In saying all of that though, you don't see any of it from the hotel grounds (except for the airplanes) and the hotel grounds make up for it. Two nice pools, more than enough loungers and towels for everyone. There is a beautiful boardwalk that goes out to a gazebo overlooking the bay. Overall, would stay again but I would bring my own pillow and make sure I brought breakfast foods!

Great Hotel

Anonymous, Baltimore, MD, 2006-08-25

In door pool, outdoor tennis/basketball court within the facility. Very nice.

Great hotel. When I first entering the room, it was amazing. The view was awesome. Room keeping was great on the first day, but after that, it gets worse. We have total 4 quests in the room, so we requested 4 sets of towels for everyday use. We got 4 sets of towels only on the second day. The rest of the stay, we only get 4 big towels instead of 12 towels(4 big, 4 medium, 4 small). We still left $20 tips for the 4 nights stay because everything else was great.

International Mall Eating places

I enjoyed my stay at the Grand Hyatt Hotel. With the exception of noise above my hotel room where there were small children that constantly bounced a ball late in the evening that went late through the night. After several calls to the front desk the problem was resolved. Secondly, the I believe the hotel would attrack more guest if they added more variety on their food menu. Also, another suggestion to have the outdoor pool with a time for adults only. Our location was excellent yet there wasn't much view. The mall's were very close which made it nice. While traveling back my husband lost his Blackberry and his ipod on the plane. He was very disappointed and don't know what to do about the situation.

Excellent Hotel, noisy air conditioning

James, Newark, NJ, 2006-06-13

Stayed at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay for an overnight business trip. Wish I had more time to check out the grounds and amenities, but I got in at 8pm Monday and was out by 9am Tuesday. Also tropical storm Alberto was threatening to become a hurricane overnight, so I was a bit on edge wondering if my plane would take off the next morning. I just had a long day in the Tampa area and dropped off the rental car and found the hotel shuttle. After getting on the shuttle, the driver offered me (and everyone who came on board) an ice cold bottle of water. It was truly appreciated after a humid day, and really put my stay off on a great foot.. Then checking in, the staff was really nice, and gave me a "realistic" update on the storm (radio & tv were sensationalizing it tho). It seemed to calm my upcoming flight worries. Went up to my room and it was REALLY nice - very clean and impressively decorated.. I didnt notice the view at night as it was dark & rainy, but when I woke up in the morning, I was very impressed looking out over the water (Gulf i think). I had left my laptop at home trying to minimize my baggage, and it was a nice feature that the room had WebTv and I was able to check my email and flight info. It wasnt perfect in that the screen size wasnt as fitting as a pc screen, but it did the job fine. Went to bed and found the one small problem..Whenever the airconditioning would kick in, it made more noise than I wouldve liked. Given that the hurricane was supposed to make landfall during the night, I slept lighter than normal and the a/c woke me up a few times thinking that the winds were battering the windows... Was worried that the proximity to the airport would be a problem, but it wasnt -- I saw a few planes taking off, but the sound wasnt loud. Overall tho, I would definitely stay at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay again - hopefully for longer this time tho and in better weather.
