During your Jacksonville vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens
Built on the grounds of a private Tudor mansion, this modestly sized but impressive museum is worth a visit for anyone who appreciates the visual arts. The permanent collection encompasses works from 2000 B.C. to the present. It's especially rich in American Impressionist paintings, 18th-century porcelain, and 18th-century Japanese woodblock prints. Personally, I find the art here a bit boring and too focused on landscapes, but that's my taste. Frankly -- and art snobs may gasp at this statement -- the actual landscaping of the museum is infinitely more spectacular. Don't miss the stunning Italian and English gardens set on the scenic St. Johns River. The museum hosts temporary and traveling exhibits and sponsors a multitude of activities during the year, so call ahead to see what's happening.

Ritz Theatre & LaVilla Museum
From 1921 to 1971, the Ritz Theatre was the center of cultural life in LaVilla, an African-American neighborhood so vibrant that it was known as the Harlem of the South. Many entertainers played the Ritz before moving on to the Apollo Theater in the real Harlem. Most of LaVilla's small, clapboard "shotgun" houses (so called because you could fire a shotgun through the central hallway to the back room and not hit anything) have been torn down in anticipation of urban renewal, but the Ritz has been rebuilt and is once again a center of the city's cultural life. Only the northwest corner of the building, including the Ritz sign, is original, but the new 426-seat theater captures the spirit of vaudevillian times. Off the lobby, LaVilla Museum recounts local African-American history and exhibits the works of black artists.

Worst Hotel Experience I Ever Had!!!!!
Eddie, Tampa, FL, 2006-02-26
The telephone conversations prior to arrival went ok. Upon our approach to the hotel, we could sense the neighborhood was less than desirable. We initially had a challenge finding our way into the parking lot. We parked and entered the lobby to find several planks of plywood in the center of the floor. Apparently they were repairing the chandelier in the lobby or replacing light bulbs or some other such maintenance. Other than that, the check in process went relatively smooth. We got our key and proceeded to our assigned room, (#127). To say, it was less than desirable would be the understatement of the year. Ther were stains in the chair, that looked like the remnants of some long forgotten lover's rendezvous. The furnishings were seedy and the outside noise was veery distracting. My wife was ready to leave the moment we hit the door. I on the other hand was tired and felt we might be able to bear it for one night. We decided to go out to find something to eat and discuss it. We went to a nearby Pizza Hut, and due to the conditions of the restaurant decided we would not even wait for the food that we ordered. I relented and decided we needed to find another hotel. We went back and to the person behind the counter about our decision. He offered another room, which I quickly declined. My wife and I had had enough of this hotel and this neighborhood. This gentleman informs me at this time that we would be charged for the room because we had it for about an hour. He further attempted to explain to me that had we made our decision within the first 15-20 minutes we would not have been responsible for the room charge. We argued this fact with him for a few minutes before deciding the argument would not be worth it. He informed us that we could speak to the manager in the morning, which we did to no avail, (surprise, surprise). The best part about this trip is that, no more than acouple of exits south on the interstate was a much better hotel with clean comfortable rooms, and a price which on the surface appeared to be $20 dollars more, but after everything was tallied, it came to a little more than $10 difference. The management at the Ramada Inn South Point has not heard the last of this whole situation.
