During your Jacksonville vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens
Another city, another zoo. But this isn't just any zoo. Located between downtown and the airport, this environmentally sensitive zoo is well on its way to becoming one of the Southeast's best. While the zoo's Wild Florida area presents local fauna -- including black bears, red wolves, Florida panthers, and alligators -- the main exhibits feature an extensive and growing collection of lions, rhinos, elephants, antelopes, cheetahs, western lowland gorillas, and other African wildlife. You'll enter the 73-acre park through an authentic thatched roof built in 1995 by 24 Zulu craftsmen. Whether you go on foot or by tram, allow at least 3 hours to tour this vast zoo. Upon your arrival, ask about current animal shows and special events. Strollers and wheelchairs are available for rent. The newest attraction, Range of the Jaguar, opened in 2004 to the tune of $15.4 million. The exhibit focuses on a neotropical rainforest setting that can be found in Central or South America. Although this attraction spotlights the jaguar, you will also see other animals such as golden lion tamarins, tapirs, capybaras, giant river otters, anteaters, and a variety of bird, amphibian, fish, and reptile species including the anaconda.
Jacksonville Landing
Resembling New York City's South Street Seaport, Boston's Faneuil Hall, Miami's Bayside, and Baltimore's Inner Harbor, this glass-and-steel complex on the north bank of the river serves as the focus of downtown activity. Yeah, you may see a mime or two occasionally, and there's a Hooters, a Ruby Tuesday, and a Starbucks, but there's also amazing local live music, good non-chain sushi, and Thai and Mexican restaurants. Unlike those in other cities, this complex is not just for tourists -- it's command central for many locals looking for a lively day or night out. There are more than 65 stores here, but shopping is secondary to the dining and entertainment. You can choose from a half-dozen full-service restaurants, plus an inexpensive food court with indoor and outdoor seating overlooking the river. The Landing is the scene of numerous special events, ranging from arts festivals to baseball-card shows, plus outdoor rock, blues, country, and jazz concerts on weekends. Call or check the website to find out what's going on during your stay.
Southbank Riverwalk
Bordering the St. Johns River, directly opposite Jacksonville Landing , this 1 1/4-mile wooden zigzag boardwalk is usually filled with joggers, tourists, folks sitting on benches, and lovers walking hand-in-hand, all of them watching the riverboats, the shorebirds, and downtown's skyline reflected in the water. At 200 feet in diameter, the Friendship Fountain, near the west end, is the nation's largest self-contained fountain; it's especially beautiful at night when illuminated by 265 colored lights. Nearby, you'll pass military memorials, a small museum dedicated to the city's history, and the Museum of Science & History of Jacksonville (MOSH), at Museum Circle and San Marco Boulevard (tel. 904/396-6674; www.themosh.org). MOSH is an interactive children's museum focusing on the science and history of Northeast Florida. One of its stars is an Allosaurus dinosaur skeleton. It also has a small planetarium, with shows included in museum admission: $7 for adults, $5.50 for seniors, and $5 for children 3 to 12. The museum is open Monday through Friday from 10am to 5pm, Saturday from 10am to 6pm, and Sunday from 1 to 6pm. The Riverwalk is the scene of special MOSH programs, seafood fests, parties, parades, and arts-and-crafts festivals.

satisfying visit

Thomas, New York, NY

Denny's is right next door (walking) for the big eater with a reasonable price

The location was excellent for where I had to visit, but did not have the best access from the highway. A key to any visit is the hotel cleanliness, and that was good. The mattress is always important and they had a firm one but it did not make us uncomfortable. The free continental breakfast started early which was perfect for us, and offered a good variety of food. The location was good in the variety of restaurants and shopping. The bathroom was very good, with no wear-n-tear to be seen. Will go there again when I visit my son. Note: It appeared that they permitted small dogs with the visitors which probably is not a condition at every hotel

Clean and friendly

This hotel was clean and the staff was friendly. It's location is good. It is right next to a Denny's and a shopping center. I would recommend staying here.

I didn't expect much, so there were no disappointments. I had just seen a piece on t.v. prior to my trip on hotel cleanliness, so when i looked around the room i did notice that the room could use a thourough cleaning. the cracks and creaveces were not spotless, and if i were a germ freak, this would not have been acceptable.

Ideal location to shopping & restaurants

Marie, Miami, FL, 2006-10-01

great location to dining and shopping for various budgets

Locale was terrific for dining and shopping all sorts and to fit various budgets. Only discomfort were the beds (hard and uncomfortable) and linen could have been of thicker quality (so thin that you could see the mattress and padding clearly through it). Breakfast was terrific and staff gracious and friendly.

Very satisfied

Judith, 2006-07-05

There were many stores and restaurants nearby.

It was very clean and the staff very friendly. Several problems arose though--my key card each night would not work. After two nights (the night clerk re-magnitized them), and he didn't say too much. Then I complained to the day clerk, who went out of her way to give me a new card and she said she was very sorry. Also, breakfast was excellent, but by 8:00 everything was pretty much gone. The juice machine was out for two days and no hardboiled eggs like on the first day. I heard the clerk say the eggs weren't delivered. Anyone heard of a corner grocery store? All in all, though I would stay here again. Very, very clean and convienient to the highway.

My review of La Quinta Inn Jacksonville Orange Park

The hotel beds were comfortable. The continental breakfast was limited but ok. The hotel was a little noisy due to traffic.

conveniently located

Anonymous, Greenville, SC, 2005-11-27

There are lots a great restaurants nearby and there was a Best Buy accross the street which we needed. It has any shop or restaurant you need right there, but for breakfast, go to the lobby for the freebie continental.

It was right off the 295 which made it easy to find and easy to get to. It was stop over for us so we weren't there long, but the value was right because it included a breakfast. There were a couple of shady characters staying there which concerned me a bit, but no one bothered us and altho it was near the interestate, the room was quiet and we got a good nights sleep before driving again.

Friendly and functional

Anonymous, 2005-11-27

Good selection of restaurants within a five to ten minute walk, although at least one major roadway may be a little intimidating to cross due to its size and heavy traffic.

The La Quinta Orange Park was a very convenient and comfortable overnight on a long holiday drive. The room was ample in size and cleanliness. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The location proved very good with easy access to shops, restaurants and the interstate.
