During your Jacksonville vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens
Another city, another zoo. But this isn't just any zoo. Located between downtown and the airport, this environmentally sensitive zoo is well on its way to becoming one of the Southeast's best. While the zoo's Wild Florida area presents local fauna -- including black bears, red wolves, Florida panthers, and alligators -- the main exhibits feature an extensive and growing collection of lions, rhinos, elephants, antelopes, cheetahs, western lowland gorillas, and other African wildlife. You'll enter the 73-acre park through an authentic thatched roof built in 1995 by 24 Zulu craftsmen. Whether you go on foot or by tram, allow at least 3 hours to tour this vast zoo. Upon your arrival, ask about current animal shows and special events. Strollers and wheelchairs are available for rent. The newest attraction, Range of the Jaguar, opened in 2004 to the tune of $15.4 million. The exhibit focuses on a neotropical rainforest setting that can be found in Central or South America. Although this attraction spotlights the jaguar, you will also see other animals such as golden lion tamarins, tapirs, capybaras, giant river otters, anteaters, and a variety of bird, amphibian, fish, and reptile species including the anaconda.
Jacksonville Landing
Resembling New York City's South Street Seaport, Boston's Faneuil Hall, Miami's Bayside, and Baltimore's Inner Harbor, this glass-and-steel complex on the north bank of the river serves as the focus of downtown activity. Yeah, you may see a mime or two occasionally, and there's a Hooters, a Ruby Tuesday, and a Starbucks, but there's also amazing local live music, good non-chain sushi, and Thai and Mexican restaurants. Unlike those in other cities, this complex is not just for tourists -- it's command central for many locals looking for a lively day or night out. There are more than 65 stores here, but shopping is secondary to the dining and entertainment. You can choose from a half-dozen full-service restaurants, plus an inexpensive food court with indoor and outdoor seating overlooking the river. The Landing is the scene of numerous special events, ranging from arts festivals to baseball-card shows, plus outdoor rock, blues, country, and jazz concerts on weekends. Call or check the website to find out what's going on during your stay.
Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens
Built on the grounds of a private Tudor mansion, this modestly sized but impressive museum is worth a visit for anyone who appreciates the visual arts. The permanent collection encompasses works from 2000 B.C. to the present. It's especially rich in American Impressionist paintings, 18th-century porcelain, and 18th-century Japanese woodblock prints. Personally, I find the art here a bit boring and too focused on landscapes, but that's my taste. Frankly -- and art snobs may gasp at this statement -- the actual landscaping of the museum is infinitely more spectacular. Don't miss the stunning Italian and English gardens set on the scenic St. Johns River. The museum hosts temporary and traveling exhibits and sponsors a multitude of activities during the year, so call ahead to see what's happening.

Good for business in Jacksonville

Robert

Waterfront facilities in downtown area have just about everything just 10 minutes away.

The Best Western Jacksonville hotel is just about 4 miles south of the downtown area and was very convenient to locations all over town. With its water challenges and all the bridges, Jax can be tough to get around particularly if you do not know the roads well. the hotel was not luxury, but it was quite clean and bright.

good for an overnight stay

daniel, Atlanta, GA, 2007-02-18

easy to get to, just be sure to look really really quickly when you get off of 95 or you will fly right on by

A reasonable place to stay for one night. Located in area with many hotels so plenty of choices there, but with it being race week, options were limited. Room was clean, check in simple. Complimentary breakfast was limited but seemed to be the standard fare. All in all, no problems with the hotel(though i never could find the sana - not that i had time to use it either)

very clean and friendly atmosphere

debbie, 2005-12-02

We were there for business and it very located close to nice restaurants. Jacksonville is a great city.

I was very pleased with the accommodations at this hotel. I had previously stayed at another location the last time I was there and this place beats them overall. The rooms were extremely clean and the size and comfort was awesome. Would be delighted to stay there again when in the neighborhood.

Pleasant Stay

Anonymous, Atlanta, GA, 2005-11-26

New shopping center with great stores is just a short 10 minute drive.

For the rate charged, I was satisfied with the overall service, location, and cleanliness of the hotel. Only disappointment was the three high school groups that were on my floor. They were too noisy, too early (5AM). Highly recommended to other guests.

Great Holiday Hospitality

Anonymous, San Francisco, CA, 2005-11-26

Dave and Busters was great fun for the kids, and an easy walk from the hotel.

The Best Western JTB, in Jacksonville, provided a warm and gracious hospitality to us during Thanksgiving. The staff were full of holiday cheer and made our stay quite delightful.

Good location for our purpose

The Marriott next door has a very nice bar.

The only complaint we had was that we rturned to our room after 2PM and the room had not been made up, Housekeeping knocked as we were getting ready to go for a wedding so got clean towels but no other service. Would like to have had a door notice to request room service early when we left the room at 7:00 AM

Family Friendly

Shawn, Tampa, FL, 2005-11-12

The Best Western Southpoint offeres a decent room at a decent price. The room bathrooms are a little dated, the rest of the room and common areas are more modernly styled. Romms have free internet. There were a lot of kids running around during my visit, so it was lively. The hotel is easy to find from I95, but getting back out can be a little confusing. Parking in fron fills up quickly, but the lot in back actually gets you closer to the elevators and front desk.

A disappointing experience

DEREK, Fort Lauderdale, FL, 2005-11-09

Having telephoned early to notify the hotel of my late check and of my request for a non-smoking room we arrived at around 11.00pm. The male desk clerk was surly, to say the least and very unwelcoming and unhelpful. The room was not the 'Standard King Room' that had been confirmed, but was instead a two double bedded smoking room specially designed for 'handicapped persons' to use. It was grubby, reeked of cigarette smoke and both beds were rumpled.I telephoned down to complain to the front desk and was told that 'there was nothing they could do as the hotel was sold out and there were no other rooms available'. To make things even worse, the in-wall air conditioning unit banged annoyingly all night long and kept both my wife and I awake all night. Not only would I never stay at a this hotel again; I would never stay at any Best Western Hotel again, if this is their standard.

Good value

Michael, Orlando, FL, 2005-11-06

The room was comfortable, but the fan in our bathroom was broken and the bed pillows were not adequate.
