During your Fort Lauderdale vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Museum of Discovery & Science
This museum's high-tech, interactive approach to education proves that science can equal fun. Adults won't feel as if they're in a kiddie museum, either. During the week, school groups meander through the cavernous two-story modern building. Kids 7 and under enjoy navigating their way through the excellent explorations in the Discovery Center. Florida Ecoscapes is particularly interesting, with a living coral reef, bees, bats, frogs, turtles, and alligators. Most weekend nights, you'll find a diverse crowd ranging from hip high-school kids to 30-somethings enjoying a rock film in the IMAX theater, which also shows short science-related films daily. Out front in the atrium, see the 52-foot-tall Great Gravity Clock, the largest kinetic-energy sculpture in the state. Call for details on changing exhibits.
Bonnet House
This historic 35-acre plantation home and estate, accessible by guided tour only, will provide you with a fantastic glimpse of Old Florida. Built in 1921, the sprawling two-story waterfront home (surrounded by formal tropical gardens) is really the backdrop of a love story, which the very chatty volunteer guides will share with you if you ask. Some have actually lunched with the former resident of the house, the late Evelyn Bartlett, wife of world-acclaimed artist Frederic Clay Bartlett. The worthwhile 1 1/4-hour tour brings you quirky people, whimsical artwork, lush grounds, and interesting design. Inquire about the literary walks and science workshops, which are offered regularly on the grounds.
Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale
A fantastic modern-art facility, the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale features permanent collections including those from William Glackens; the CoBrA Movement in Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam with over 200 paintings; 50 sculptures; 1,200 works on paper from 1948 to 1951, including the largest repository of Asger Jorn graphics outside the Silkeborg Kunstmuseum in Denmark; stunning Picasso ceramics; and contemporary works from over 90 Cuban artists in exile around the world. Traveling exhibits and continuing art classes make the museum a great place to spend a rainy day.

o.k. for a night

Miguel, Hartford, CT

upkeep was good. a bit folsomesque as the lobby closes at 6p.m. and you have to check in through a drive-thru style window. this place runs a tight ship.

Needs Refurbishing

Anonymous

Close to airport and easy drive to the airport

Older hotel that badly needs refurbishing, and it shows. Old hotel smell. Breakfast not available until later than most people need. A lot of traffic noise.

Good location, but rent a car

Jeffrey, Sacramento, CA

Main pier with nearby restaurants is about a half hour walk on sand, or 20 minutes on land. If you fly in to the area for more than a day's stay, rent a car; avoid steep cab fares (one cabbie's suggestion!).

We didn't know from the description given by the hotel that it was not located on the beach side of the busy A1A Coastal Highway. Beach access is not clearly signed. The hotel faces slab-sided high-rise buildings across the street; it probably once had a clear view of the beach. If you don't have a car, take care. We were almost nailed twice by speeding cars turning left into the marked pedestrian crosswalks. They do not watch for walkers. Dining options are limited if you don't have a car. There's a great pizza joint a block or two away and the Ramada across the street has a passable dining room with a beach-sky view. Given its central location and modest accommodations, the Travelodge is still a value (Sleepy Bear and all).

Should be re-evaluated.

Anonymous, 2007-02-06

There was only one light in the room as the bulbs in the other lamps were burned out or did not function. Also, the bed sheets and pillow cases were not fresh, they looked like someone slept in them. All in all, I was not satisfied. I was very glad to be booked for one night only.

The Travelodge was the worst

donald, Pittsburgh, PA, 2006-03-22

A McDonald's across the street but for better dining was a long walk . That area was close to the beach but access was not easy .

This was the most worst room I have ever stayed in. When we first open the room door their was a strong smell of urine. The Headboard of the bed was broke and was floating agains our heads as we were sleeping. The breakfest was out side with no room to sit down and eat.Their were large stains on the carpet which was most likly where the oder was coming from.

Poor cleanliness

Anonymous, Birmingham, 2005-11-28

Would be a useful one or two night stop if they cleaned up their act!

Location was useful and staff quite friendly but beds too soft and when one tipped up found months of dirt behind bed which had never been properly cleaned for months!
