During your Fort Lauderdale vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Museum of Discovery & Science
This museum's high-tech, interactive approach to education proves that science can equal fun. Adults won't feel as if they're in a kiddie museum, either. During the week, school groups meander through the cavernous two-story modern building. Kids 7 and under enjoy navigating their way through the excellent explorations in the Discovery Center. Florida Ecoscapes is particularly interesting, with a living coral reef, bees, bats, frogs, turtles, and alligators. Most weekend nights, you'll find a diverse crowd ranging from hip high-school kids to 30-somethings enjoying a rock film in the IMAX theater, which also shows short science-related films daily. Out front in the atrium, see the 52-foot-tall Great Gravity Clock, the largest kinetic-energy sculpture in the state. Call for details on changing exhibits.
Stranahan House
In a town whose history is younger than many of its residents, visitors may want to take a minute to see Fort Lauderdale's very oldest standing structure and a prime example of classic "Florida Frontier" architecture. Built in 1901 by the "father of Fort Lauderdale," Frank Stranahan, this house once served as a trading post for Seminole trappers, who came here to sell pelts. It's been a post office, town hall, and general store and now serves as a worthwhile little museum of South Florida pioneer life, containing turn-of-the-last-century furnishings and historic photos of the area. It is also the site of occasional concerts and social functions; call for details.
Billie Swamp Safari
Billie Swamp Safari is an up-close-and-personal view of the Seminole Indians' 2,200-acre Big Cypress Reservation. There are daily tours into reservation wetlands, hardwood hammocks, and areas where wildlife (seemingly strategically placed deer, water buffalo, bison, wild hogs, ornery ostriches, rare birds, and alligators) reside. Tours are provided aboard swamp buggies, customized motorized vehicles specially designed to provide visitors with an elevated view of the frontier while you comfortably ride through the wetlands and cypress heads. The more adventurous may want to take a fast-moving airboat ride or trek a nature trail. Airboat rides run about 20 minutes, while swamp-buggy tours last about an hour. A stop at an alligator farm reeks of Disney, but the kids won't care. You can stay overnight in a native Tiki hut if you're really looking to immerse yourself in the culture.

My review of El Palacio Hotel & Conference Center

Anonymous, St Louis, MO, 2007-02-18

THERE IS A WAFFLE HOUSE VERY CLOSE AND PLENTY OF FAST FOOD PLACES. I TRAVELED A LITTLE FURTHER FOR FINE DINING

THIS HOTEL WAS VERY CLOSE TO THE HWY AND TO THE PARK WHERE WE WERE GOING. I WAS IMPRESSED THAT THE LINEN WAS FRESHLY WASHED WERE YOU COULD ACTUALLY SMELL THE FABRIC SOFTNER. I DID THINK THAT SOME OF THE STAFF WAS SOMEWHAT RUDE BUT THOSE THAT WERE NOT, WERE WONDERFUL. THE BEDS COULD HAVE BEEN A LITTLE MORE COMFORTABLE BUT THE WATER PRESSURE IN THE SHOWER WAS GREAT. IT WAS ALMOST LIKE GETTING A MASSAGE.

The air conditioner did not blow cold air. The walls were moldy and the room climate was musty. When I mentioned to the maintanence person that the room was moldy, his response was welcome to Florida. I doubt that all rooms in Florida are moldy.

Picturesque, great location

Anonymous, Pensacola, FL, 2006-09-17

For dining there is a Chilli's maybe a mile north and a fabulous Italian restaraunt about four miles east toward the beach.

The El Palacio Hotel was quite comfortable and very functional. With a beatiful pool and courtyard in the center, it made for an enjoyable stay. The train that occasionally passes nearby didn't bother me a bit.

needs work

Nichole, 2006-07-08

there were many things near by .

at first glance the hotel has many possibilities. The first room we were supposed to have was not finished (cleaned) so they changed it for us. When we were able to get into our room the toilet was not flushing. someone did come to fix it quickly but it ran the rest of the night. The room itself was clean to the eye and neat but smelled a bit musty. We just aired it out a while. Dinner and the service was very good but a sports bar atmosphere. THe gardens and pool were under constuction. I think they will be beautifull if they finish. also very close to rail road.(noise)

My review of El Palacio Hotel & Conference Center

there's a restaurant next door that serves good breakfast and also nice restaurants not too far from hotel to take the family for dinner.

the el palacio hotel was comfortable. The only problem that I had was that my hotel room floor was very wet so we had to switch about 3 times to find the right room, because we needed a suite. The children enjoyed the pool even though they never had towels available to dry off with, therefore we had to use the ones from the hotel room and request more towels for the room. The sports bar was very nice and clean. The food was excellent. Staff was also friendly.

Dissatisfied

Rebecca, Indianapolis, IN, 2006-03-30

This hotel is located directly next to train tracks that are extremely loud, especially at night. I also had damage to my rental car in the hotel parking lot, which the hotel manager would not comp me anything for. The rooms were comparable to any hotel. The best thing about this hotel was the pool area and bar/restaurant. I wouldn't stay at this hotel ever again.

Fit my needs

Brian, Daytona Beach, FL, 2006-03-23

This hotel filled my needs nicely. I needed one night, near the interstate, reasonably priced. The staff was friendly and got me checked in quickly. Because I arrived late in the evening and left early the next morning, I was very concerned with the neighborhood, dining options, etc. My main desire was to have a place just off the interstate enroute to my destination which was exactly what I got. Comfortable room with TV and shower. Nothing extravegant. Don't know if this would have been my choice if I was travelling with my family, but was satisifed with my stay.

We got in late and there was not much around at all. We were hungry and had to eat at the greasy spoon (a bit scary) next door.
