During your Tampa vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Henry B. Plant Museum
Originally built in 1891 by railroad tycoon Henry B. Plant as the super-chichi 511-room Tampa Bay Hotel, this ornate building is worth a short trip across the river from downtown to the University of Tampa campus. Its 13 silver minarets and distinctive Moorish architecture, modeled after the Alhambra in Spain, make this National Historic Landmark a focal point of the Tampa skyline. Although the building is the highlight of a visit, don't skip its contents: art and furnishings from Europe and Asia, plus exhibits that explain the history of the original railroad resort, Florida's early tourist industry, and the hotel's role as a staging point for Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War.
MOSI (Museum of Science and Industry)
A great place to take the kids, MOSI is the largest science center in the Southeast, with more than 450 interactive exhibits. Step into the Gulf Hurricane to experience 74 mph winds, explore the human body in The Amazing You and, if your heart is up to it, ride a bicycle across a 98-foot-long cable suspended 30 feet above the lobby (don't worry: you'll be harnessed to the bike). You can also watch stunning movies in Florida's first IMAX dome theater and take a 5-minute ride in a flight simulator ($3.50 additional charge). Outside, trails wind through a 47-acre nature preserve with a butterfly garden.
The Florida Aquarium
See more than 5,000 aquatic animals and plants that call Florida home at this entertaining and informative attraction. The exhibits follow a drop of water from the pristine springs of the Florida Wetlands Gallery, through a mangrove forest in the Bays and Beaches Gallery, and out onto the Coral Reefs, where an impressive 43-foot-wide, 14-foot-tall panoramic window lets you look out at schools of fish and lots of sharks and stingrays. Also worth visiting are the educational "Explore a Shore" playground, a deepwater exhibit, and a tank housing moray eels. You can look for birds and sea life on 90-minute Eco Tour cruises in the Bay Spirit, a 64-foot catamaran. The aquarium also offers a Dive with the Sharks program (tel. 813/367-4005) that gives certified scuba divers the chance to swim with blacktip reef, sand tiger, and nurse sharks for 30 minutes. The $150 price tag includes a souvenir photo and T-shirt.

Good for business traveler

peter, Newport News, VA, 2007-03-06

The hotel is very clean and has a nice view of Tampa Bay. I was impressed with the fitness center and walking path to the water. I was somewhat disappointed with the in-hotel restaurant selection. The only option for dining I found after about 8 PM was the hotel bar. I could get a meal, but it wasn't the best atmosphere. There is what looks like a nice restaurant just off-site affiliated with the hotel, but not the type of place I'm looking for when I'm by myself on a business trip. Overall, if you are planning to go out for dinner, I'd recommend the hotel.

Just about 2 miles frm the Airport and about 4 miles to downtown attractions. ALos just a sort senic coastal drive to beaches in Clearwater.

The Grand Hyatt Tampa was just perfect. The room was large. Very, very clean. The staff were most helpful and fiendly. The food service and preparation was excellent.

Great Hotel all around!

Jennie, Bangor, ME, 2007-02-26

The Malls of Tampa offer a variety of eating establishments, even the good old stand by: McDonald's. There are a few places that will deliver to the Hotel ( pizza etc.) but be warned that most won't deliver between 4-7pm because of the traffic.

The check in staff at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay was pleasant and helpful, the room service, bell hop,and cleaning service very efficient and polite. This Hotel is beautiful, and the boardwalk on the property was lots of fun for my 5 year old. The pool was a favorite of hers! The proximity to the airport was a deciding factor for me, it's only 10 minutes away and very easy to find. The malls of Tampa ( the malls offer many more restaurants and theaters) aren't very far and Clearwater Beach is only 1/2 hour-45 minutes away( with moderate traffic). Busch Gardens was easy to find, and on the way there you pass the exit for the Lowry Park Zoo....BOTH are excellent places to bring your kids!!! My 5 year old had a great time! The rooms were great! Get a bay view room if you can, because the sunsets are worth it...beds were extremely comfortable, and the bathroom was good sized and CLEAN. The are two restaurants in the main hotel Armani's( italian cuisine) and Petey Brown's... we didn't sample Armani's but, Petey Brown's, although slightly pricey at times had great food and excellent service. There is also Oyster Catcher's on the adjoining property. We stayed during a convention, and even though there were quite a lot of people there we weren't disturbed in anyway. We didn't take advantage of the health club facilities, but heard good things about it... I would recommend this hotel to anyone....the price is a little more pricey, but to me it was worth it to have the security, the ammenities and the service to make my stay the best possible. Definitely make reservations in advance though, and beware of the mini bar.....the prices even on the bottles of water were outrageous! If there were one thing I wish the room had that it DIDN'T, it would be a refridgerator ( with a small child it helps to have the milk/cereal and snacks on hand and we had to keep our breakfast milk in the ice bucket---not a terrible inconvenience but still).

nice hotel, friendly staff and great view!

Better to rent a car from the hotel and that way you can go where you want to. We found out that everything you want to do outside the hotel, you need a taxi or shuttle. There is no walking to anything as this hotel is in the middle of nowhere.

Hotel room was more than expected! Great view of bay, large king bed that was extra comfortable (except for very soft pillows), nice office area and the bathroom was beautiful. Hotel staff, especially front desk, were very nice and helpful. We had a horrible start to our holiday (the airline ended up cancelling two of our flights which we ended up being 24 hours later than expected and then ended up losing our luggage) but the hotel staff, right away, helped us with finding our luggage, giving us toothpaste and such and giving us directions to the closet mall and Walgreens. Very helpful and we were very happy after such a long day to get such great service. I wasn't very happy with the dining choices. We ended up eating at the same place for all meals. Not that it wasn't a nice restaurant but there should have been somewhere that was cheaper. We paid 30.00 for breakfast both days which was a little much for people that normally don't eat breakfast. There is a nice restaurant on the top level, but beware it's not open on Sundays (we left it to a Sunday and we're dissapointed that it was closed) and there is also a restaurant at the resort part of the hotel, overlooking the bay, that is for seafood lovers. We did find a little cafe, on our last day, that serves food at the business building on the property. I'm not sure if you need to work there to get the food but it's worth a try. The area of the hotel was okay. It was out in the middle of no where though, the airplanes took off right over the hotel and there was construction right outside(they are fixing the roads). In saying all of that though, you don't see any of it from the hotel grounds (except for the airplanes) and the hotel grounds make up for it. Two nice pools, more than enough loungers and towels for everyone. There is a beautiful boardwalk that goes out to a gazebo overlooking the bay. Overall, would stay again but I would bring my own pillow and make sure I brought breakfast foods!

Great Hotel

Anonymous, Baltimore, MD, 2006-08-25

In door pool, outdoor tennis/basketball court within the facility. Very nice.

Great hotel. When I first entering the room, it was amazing. The view was awesome. Room keeping was great on the first day, but after that, it gets worse. We have total 4 quests in the room, so we requested 4 sets of towels for everyday use. We got 4 sets of towels only on the second day. The rest of the stay, we only get 4 big towels instead of 12 towels(4 big, 4 medium, 4 small). We still left $20 tips for the 4 nights stay because everything else was great.

International Mall Eating places

I enjoyed my stay at the Grand Hyatt Hotel. With the exception of noise above my hotel room where there were small children that constantly bounced a ball late in the evening that went late through the night. After several calls to the front desk the problem was resolved. Secondly, the I believe the hotel would attrack more guest if they added more variety on their food menu. Also, another suggestion to have the outdoor pool with a time for adults only. Our location was excellent yet there wasn't much view. The mall's were very close which made it nice. While traveling back my husband lost his Blackberry and his ipod on the plane. He was very disappointed and don't know what to do about the situation.

Excellent Hotel, noisy air conditioning

James, Newark, NJ, 2006-06-13

Stayed at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay for an overnight business trip. Wish I had more time to check out the grounds and amenities, but I got in at 8pm Monday and was out by 9am Tuesday. Also tropical storm Alberto was threatening to become a hurricane overnight, so I was a bit on edge wondering if my plane would take off the next morning. I just had a long day in the Tampa area and dropped off the rental car and found the hotel shuttle. After getting on the shuttle, the driver offered me (and everyone who came on board) an ice cold bottle of water. It was truly appreciated after a humid day, and really put my stay off on a great foot.. Then checking in, the staff was really nice, and gave me a "realistic" update on the storm (radio & tv were sensationalizing it tho). It seemed to calm my upcoming flight worries. Went up to my room and it was REALLY nice - very clean and impressively decorated.. I didnt notice the view at night as it was dark & rainy, but when I woke up in the morning, I was very impressed looking out over the water (Gulf i think). I had left my laptop at home trying to minimize my baggage, and it was a nice feature that the room had WebTv and I was able to check my email and flight info. It wasnt perfect in that the screen size wasnt as fitting as a pc screen, but it did the job fine. Went to bed and found the one small problem..Whenever the airconditioning would kick in, it made more noise than I wouldve liked. Given that the hurricane was supposed to make landfall during the night, I slept lighter than normal and the a/c woke me up a few times thinking that the winds were battering the windows... Was worried that the proximity to the airport would be a problem, but it wasnt -- I saw a few planes taking off, but the sound wasnt loud. Overall tho, I would definitely stay at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay again - hopefully for longer this time tho and in better weather.
