During your Denver vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Colorado History Museum
The Colorado Historical Society's permanent exhibits include "The Colorado Chronicle," an 1800-to-1949 timeline that uses biographical plaques and a remarkable collection of photographs, news clippings, and paraphernalia to illustrate Colorado's past. Dozens of dioramas portray episodes in state history, including an intricate re-creation of 19th-century Denver. There's also a life-size display on early transportation and industry. The first major new permanent exhibit at the museum in some time, "Ancient Voices," is slated to open in early 2005, a $400,000 multimedia exhibit dedicated to Colorado's native tribes and their history. It will be followed by another new exhibit, "Confluence of Cultures," which will depict the Pioneer era when it opens in 2006. The museum offers a series of lectures and statewide historical and archaeological tours. Its gift shop is also worth a visit. Allow 1 hour.
Denver Firefighters Museum
The history of the Denver Fire Department is preserved and displayed here, in historic Fire Station No. 1. Built in 1909 for Engine Company No. 1, it was one of the largest firehouses in Denver, occupying 11,000 square feet on two floors. In its early years, it lodged men, fire engines, and horses. Motorized equipment replaced horse-drawn engines by 1923, and in 1932 the firehouse was "modernized." Concrete replaced the wooden floor, the stables and hayloft were removed, and the plumbing was improved. Visitors today see firefighting equipment dating to 1866, as well as historic photos and newspaper clippings. Allow 45 minutes.
Black American West Museum & Heritage Center
Nearly one-third of the cowboys in the Old West were black, and this museum chronicles their little-known history, along with that of black doctors, teachers, miners, farmers, newspaper reporters, and state legislators. The extensive collection occupies the Victorian home of Dr. Justina Ford, the first black woman licensed to practice medicine in Denver. Known locally as the "Lady Doctor," Ford (1871-1951) delivered more than 7,000 babies -- most of them at home because she was denied hospital privileges -- and consistently served the disadvantaged and underprivileged of Denver. The museum's founder and curator emeritus, Paul Stewart, loved to play cowboys and Indians as a boy, but his playmates always chose him to be an Indian because "There was no such thing as a black cowboy." He began researching the history of blacks in the West after meeting a black cowboy who had led cattle drives in the early 20th century. Stewart explored almost every corner of the American West, gathering artifacts, memorabilia, photographs, oral histories -- anything to document the existence of black cowboys -- and his collection served as the nucleus for this museum when it opened in 1971. Allow 1 hour.

THE HOTEL WAS RIGHT NEXT TO THE FOOTBALL STADIUM. WITH ALL THE SNOW IN DECEMBER WE DID NOT VENTURE OUT.

THE RED LION OVERALL WAS AS GOOD AS I EXPECTED. THE LOCATION WAS VERY GOOD, STAFF OK, ROOM OK. THE PROBLEMS WERE A BATHROOM THAT WAS VERY SMALL AND TRIANGULAR. ALSO WHILE THE DINING AREA HAD A GREAT VIEW, IT TOOK 1 HOUR TO GET SERVED.

Helpful Staff

The shuttle service will take you to the downtown shopping area and pick you up. The shuttle runs until 11 pm.

The Red Lion has a great shuttle service to downtown. Additionally, staff was willing to call places to see if they were open on Sunday. I would recommend this hotel to others for the friendly service!

Lots of choices, or just dine in!

Make this a stop if you are in Denver. Value exceeded many other hotels in this area.

The Red Lion in Denver was a great place for me although I was only there for a few hours and did not get to visit any of the amenities or nearby attractions. The hotel staff were friendly and the room was clean.

Our room smelled like an old shoe!

Barbara, Toledo, OH, 2006-11-07

the shuttle is free. The Plaza downtown. Cyote Ugly, a Jazz Bar, Hard Rock Cafe, Italian Bistros, spegetti wharehouse, Chinese, starbucks, High end fashion, Bare Essentials makeup, childrens shops. Hot topic teen clothes, a skater shop. The main street is blocked off from traffic. Here are horse and carriage rides, a bycycle with a buggy.

The foyer and entrance were very clean, in fact it shined. Our room although clean could use many updates and at the price you pay to stay, it could be fixed up. we did have fresh towels, a working blow dryer, iron and board, coffee evry day and a newspaper. Our room smelled like an old icky wet smelly shoe. We went out and purchased air freshener and sprayed the room heavily before leaving in the morning. This was a non smoking double. The hotel is on top of thier game cleaning, very friendly. Not so with the front desk. They border on rude. And do not answer the phone whe you call down to speak with them about the smell. I had a convesation with a manager before going out to verify we had a room with 2 beds and a view of the mountains. Out our window we seen the parking lot. Now there is a shuttle that will take you anywhere you want to go in Denver and come back and pick you up! This is so great if you dont want to drive, and you CANNOT walk to downtown from this hotel. You have to cross a 4 lane FAST moving highway then go another 10 miles. We took the shuttle down to the PLAZA. It is a three story outside mall with out side escalators to go from floor to floor. There were so many amazing shops to see. Fashion forward for adults teens and small children. Quit inmressive. Also many specialty bars and restraunts. Horse and carraige rides too. We called for our ride and he was there in 5 min. Be sure to tip this fella, hes worth it! Back to the hotel you can get breakfast lunch dinner in the restraunt at the very top of the hotel. Just a spectacular view of the city day or night time, there is a bar there too. Very clean and with a very nice wait staff. Great food!!

great for sports fans

Denver Broncos stadium, and the six flags downtown

The hotel is located in the same parking lot as the mile high stadium in Denver, everything from the gift shop to the dining is Broncos related. I am not a big fan of the Broncos, we went for a family vacation to see the mountains, but they are over an hour drive away from the hotel. If you are going to sight see, this probably would not be a good place to stay, but if you are a fan of the Broncos, it would be great.
