During your Denver vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Lakeside Amusement Park
Among the largest amusement parks in the Rocky Mountains, Lakeside has about 40 rides, including a Cyclone roller coaster, a midway with carnival and arcade games, and a rare steam-powered miniature train that circles the lake. There are also food stands and picnic facilities, plus a separate Kiddie's Playland with 15 rides. Allow 3 hours.
Water World
This 64-acre complex, billed as America's largest family water park, has two ocean-like wave pools, river rapids for inner-tubing, twisting water slides, a small children's play area, plus other attractions -- more than 40 in all. Allow at least 3 hours.
U.S. Mint
Whether we worship it or simply consider money a necessary commodity, we all have to admit a certain fascination with the coins and bills that seem to make the world turn. There are four mints in the United States, but the Denver Mint is one of only two (the other is the Philadelphia Mint) where we can actually see the process of turning lumps of metal into shiny coins.Opened in 1863, the Mint originally melted gold dust and nuggets into bars. In 1904 the office moved to this site, and 2 years later began making gold and silver coins. Copper pennies were added a few years later. The last silver dollars (containing 90% silver) were coined in 1935. In 1970, all silver was eliminated from dollars and half dollars (today they're made of a copper-nickel alloy). The Denver Mint stamps billions of coins each year, and each has a small D on it.Although visitors today don't get as close as they once did, a self-guided tour along the visitors' gallery provides a good look at the process, with a bird's-eye view from the mezzanine of the actual coin-minting process. A variety of displays help explain the minting process, and an adjacent gift shop on Cherokee Street (tel. 303/572-9500) offers a variety of souvenirs. Allow 1 hour.Note: Due to greatly increased security, individuals are now required to arrange tours at least 3 weeks in advance with their congressional representatives at www.senate.gov or www.house.gov, and there are quite a few requirements for entering the mint. It is uncertain that walk-in visitors will be allowed in the future.

drafty

In poor industrial neighborhood with pawn shops and adult entertainment.

Cold and drafty rooms. Lack of extra blankets. Restaurant was a Mexican bar that also had very good Mexican food. Staff was friendly.

No phone no lights, not a single luxury...

Anonymous, 2006-10-10

Invesco Field, we were there for Monday Night Football.

Big sign out front advertising their lounge, which didn't exist. Room reeked of some sort of scent that had been used to cover up odors, we discovered later that it was actually incense sticks that had been jammed into holes in the walls and burned prior to our arrival. Knife marks in the walls, bathroom door and toilet were falling apart, 3 lamps in the room, 2 minus bulbs and lampshades, one of which wasn't even near a plug, had been used for "decoration", I suppose. Old room furniture and broken glass all over the "courtyard". Two guests and one washrag, towels which had been "pre-stained" from previous guests. Dirty, burned bedspreads, horrible carpet in the room, heater was barely functioning and in two pieces...which didn't matter, because power to the entire hotel was out for most of our stay in the evening. No calling the front desk to complain, as the phone has been yanked out of the wall, enough to leave a hole in the wall that you can see light from the next room through. Worst hotel of my life, and I've stayed in more than my fair share of questionable ones over the years.

A horrible surprise

Mary, Pittsburgh, PA, 2006-06-29

the "nightlife" is right in the lobby!!

This was the worst!! The curtains were torn and stained and our beds looked as if they hadn't been changed since the last guests. the elevator was broden, the stairs were crumbling and dirty and the whole place was just shabby!!!!! We were harrassed and whistled at by other male guests and it was just dreadful.

Not a great location

Anonymous, Casper, WY, 2005-10-03

The Pepsi center is about 5 or ten mins. away from the hotel and downtown itself is only a couple of minutes away.

The Days Inn Central was a decent hotel, everything was clean and tidy. But the hotel was located in a bad part of town, I felt unconfortable by the fact that most of the businesses had bars on the windows and that the convienience stores each had an on duty police officer in the store at all times. Other then the location of the hotel, everything was o.k., not great, but o.k.

Run down and dirty

Anonymous, 2005-09-29

If your were driving and very tired and it was late at night and this was the last ressort, it would be good. And because so few people are staying here, you are sure to find a room at last minute. The staff does speak Spanish so this is good. No car and you are exactly nowhere. Add to my list of reasons not to revisit Denver.
