During your Anaheim vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Aquarium of the Bay
The latest major addition to Fisherman's Wharf is Aquarium of the Bay, a $38-million, 1-million-gallon marine attraction filled with sharks, stingrays, and more. A moving footpath transports visitors through clear acrylic tunnels. The aquarium ultimately is not a destination in itself, but it's a good place to take the kids if you're in the neighborhood.
California Palace of the Legion of Honor
Designed as a memorial to California's World War I casualties, this neoclassical structure is an exact replica of the Legion of Honor Palace in Paris, right down to the inscription HONNEUR ET PATRIE above the portal. The Legion of Honor reopened in late 1995, after a 2-year, $35-million renovation and seismic upgrading. The exterior's grassy expanses, cliff-side paths, and incredible view of the Golden Gate and downtown make this an absolute must-visit attraction before you even get in the door. The inside is equally impressive. The museum's permanent collection covers 4,000 years of art and includes paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts from Europe, as well as international tapestries, prints, and drawings. The chronological display of 4,000 years of ancient and European art includes one of the world's finest collections of Rodin's sculptures. The sunlight Legion Café offers indoor and outdoor seating at moderate prices. Plan to spend 2 or 3 hours here.
Yerba Buena Center for the Arts/Yerba Buena Gardens
The Yerba Buena Center, which opened in 1993, is the city's cultural facility, similar to New York's Lincoln Center but far more fun on the outside. It stands on top of the northern extension of the underground Moscone Convention Center. The center's two buildings present music, theater, dance, and visual arts. James Stewart Polshek designed the 755-seat theater, and Fumihiko Maki designed the Galleries and Arts Forum, which features three galleries and a space designed especially for dance. Cutting-edge computer art, multimedia shows, traditional exhibitions, and performances occupy the center's high-tech galleries.More commonly explored is the 5-acre Yerba Buena Gardens, a great place to relax in the grass on a sunny day and check out several artworks. The most dramatic outdoor piece is an emotional mixed-media memorial to Martin Luther King, Jr. Created by sculptor Houston Conwill, poet Estella Majozo, and architect Joseph de Pace, it features 12 panels, each inscribed with quotations from King, sheltered behind a 50-foot-high waterfall. For most, this pastoral patch is a brief stopover to the surrounding attractions. New to the gardens in 2004 are seasonal free outdoor festivals held on varied dates from May through October. It's definitely worth discovering whether you can catch one of these, as performances include dance, music, poetry, and more by the San Francisco Ballet, Opera, and Symphony and others; see www.ybgf.org for details. On the periphery of Yerba Buena Gardens are a number of worthy individually operated excursions. In the Children's Center, Zeum (tel. 415/777-2800) includes a cafe, interactive cultural center, bowling lanes, ice-skating rink, fabulous 1906 carousel, and interactive play and learning garden. Sony's Metreon Entertainment Center (tel. 415/369-6000; www.metreon.com) is a 350,000-square-foot complex housing great movie theaters, an IMAX theater, a bountiful gourmet food court, interactive attractions (including one that features Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are and surprisingly exciting virtual bowling), and shops. As part of the plan to develop this area as the city's cultural hub, the California Historical Society opened at 678 Mission St. in 1995 and is home to a research library and a publicly accessible California photography and fine arts collection.

Quaint decor at a great location

Sasha, Fresno, CA, 2007-03-11

This hotel is just a short walk to many art galleries. It's a free and easy way to spend a day or evening, strolling through the gorgeous levels of art. Also, it's just a short walk to Market Street where you can also take a bus to Golden Gate Park-- a free and easy way to spend a day.

The Warwick Regis at San Francisco had nice rooms, with Old European decor, and this kind of interior build-out was a nice touch. We stayed in a room with a queen bed, which was bigger than I'd expected. There wasn't much of a view of course-- a wall and the street below, but we expected this as a lot of hotels do this with their online specials. The curtains and bespreads were very nice, of a thick, rich material; the beds were canopied and with handcarved wooden headboards; the separate bathroom is outfitted in black marble. There is an office desk, a sitting chair, an HDTV, and a paid mini-bar. You can't beat the location. This hotel is within walking distance to EVERYWHERE you might want to go in San Francisco: it's just off Union Square and Market Street, and Chinatown. You can start walking anywhere and hit tons of restaurants, stores, wine bars, art galleries, and theaters-- in fact, it's on the same block as some of the most famous theaters in SF. The hotel itself, however nice and the rooms are, definitely has some down qualities. You have to pay for everything extra, something I'm not used to experiencing with this class of hotel, and I'm not sure if it's particular to this hotel or to this location. Calling down for a toothbrush, for example, is $3.00-- you're best off visiting the CVS right next door. And there is no free internet: paid wireless service is available by the day or by a three-day period. Moreover, bear in mind that valet service here is extremely expensive, as is in the general area. It's $35.00 for valet service, which is about the standard overnight parking service for the union square area, but the hotel does add taxes to that price as well. This valet service is supposed to include being able to call down for your car (they say to call 15 minutes ahead). We did this one night, and the service was as promised, but when we called down for our car to check out, it took about 50 minutes before our car arrived. We stayed at the Warwick Regis SF for a nice weekend alone. It was lovely because of the location, and the decor lent us a sense of escape. For that, I would recommend the Warwick. However, if you stay here, be prepared to not feel as if you're in a luxury hotel at all in terms of amenities or service-- either don't expect it, or expect to pay dearly for it.

Review

Henry, New York, NY, 2007-03-09

Theater across the Street.

Very exasperating- to be fair the staff accompanied me to the other hotel and the next night checked me in at the Warwick in a very nice room. The TV system never worked properly and the restaurant was under restoration. Over all it was an unsatisfactory experience.

great location, some charm

Raymond, Washington, DC, 2007-03-07

Kuletos, an italian restaurant a few blocks away, offers good italian food.

The hotel is on the same corner as much more expensive hotels near Union Square and offers some charm with few frills. The free internet access in the lobby was great, the lack of any gym was not. If you want to exercise, they suggest a one-day gym pass around the corner that costs $20. The hotel staff are very friendly, though the cost they quoted for a car service to Oakland Airport was off by $10 (the cost is $65 not $55). Overall, a good, clean, inexpensive option with some nice touches.

Great for the price

Maria, 2007-03-04

It is close to all the designer stores and mall.

The Warwick Regis Hotel made our stay in San Francisco very nice. The staff was very polite and helpful. The room was very small but overall it was clean. The hotel room was missing a few items:iron, ironing board, and hangers. As far as location, the hotel was in a perfect spot of San Francisco--close to shopping and restaurants.

Jewel near Union Square

Louis, 2007-02-10

Too many choices to list. All within a short walk.

I found to Warwick Regis to be a pleasant unexpected surprise. It had everything that I wanted in a hotel, location, room comfort, ambience at a very reasonable price. It has a European boutique feel and a helpful, courteous staff. I will definitely stay there again.

A Runaway Christmas Treat

deborah, Phoenix, AZ, 2006-12-29

You are 2 blocks from Union Square and Sax 5th Avenue, Macys, Tiffany's, Prada, Gucci, Neimen Marcus etc., etc, etc. You are one block from 3 major theaters. Two blocks from the cable car. What else do you need.

We picked the Warwick Regis for our runaway Christmas treat hotel as we had had a positive experience with one of their hotels in Seattle. This beat Seattle hands down and is a delightful gem of a place within 2 blocks of Union Square. The hotel has a European boutique atmosphere and avoids the cookie cutter approach of most chain hotels. The rooms are smallish but beautifully furnished with distinctive antique beds and armoires. Towels, linens and robes are of good quality and toiletries are from Gilcrest and Soames. The bathrooms do not have adequate lighting for makeup /shaving, a failing I have noted in this chain. Mattresses are excellent but the pillows need work. There are in room safes and honor bars. The rooms are spotless. We took a chance, a leap of faith and had our Christmas dinner in the hotel restaurant. WE HAD ONE OF THE BEST MEALS THAT WE HAVE EVER EATEN!!!!!!!!! all of the meals that we had in the hotel were of excellent quality (we are using San Francisco standards here) and a reasonable price. We liked the staff, the food , the room , the location.....we plan to return next year. This is not a hotel for young families and seems to cater to an older upscale audience. Minimal frills i.e. fitness or business center, very generous in the coffee/tea and cookie area.

Macy's, Bllomingdale, Saks Fifth Avenue so nearby

It is highly recommended hotel to stay-in if you really want to have a good comfortable hotel in the center of San Francisco. The staff are very friendly and they will make you feel like at home. Shopping centers are just next door and foods are easy to find nearby. It is value for money indeed!

There were several great breakfast and dinner places to eat within a five minute walk.

The Warwick Regis provided a great home base while visiting San Francisco. We were a few minutes from great restaurants, cable cars, night clubs and Theater. The room was small but comfortable.

Vacation friendly

Anonymous, 2006-09-23

If you are interested in going to Fisherman's Warf and Pier 39 just hop on a cable car, which stops at every corner, and ride it all the way to the beach.

The Warwick Regis Hotel was perfect for a couple traveling through San Francisco on vacation. We found the service to be exceptional and the rooms very comfortable. We were satisfied with the price of our room, especially considering the prices of the other hotels in the area. We even had a last minute emergency and needed to stay an extra night at the hotel. The hotel staff were very friendly and helped us get checked back in to a room at the last minute.
