During your San Francisco vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Fisherman's Wharf
Few cities in America are as adept at wholesaling their historical sites as San Francisco, which has converted Fisherman's Wharf into one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world. Unless you come really early in the morning, you won't find any traces of the traditional waterfront life that once existed here; the only fishing going on around here is for tourists' dollars.Originally called Meigg's Wharf, this bustling strip of waterfront got its present moniker from generations of fishers who used to base their boats here. Today, the bay has become so polluted with toxins that bright yellow placards warn against eating fish from the waters. A small fleet of fewer than 30 fishing boats still operates from here, but basically Fisherman's Wharf has been converted into one long shopping mall that stretches from Ghirardelli Square at the west end to PIER 39 at the east.Accommodating a total of 350 boats, two marinas flank PIER 39 and house the Blue & Gold bay sightseeing fleet. In recent years, some 600 California sea lions have taken up residence on the adjacent floating docks. Until they abandon their new playground, which seems more and more unlikely, these playful, noisy creatures (some nights you can hear them all the way from Washington Sq.) are one of the best free attractions on the wharf. Docent-led programs, offered at PIER 39 on weekends from 11am to 5pm, teach visitors about the range, habitat, and adaptability of the California sea lion. Some people love Fisherman's Wharf; others can't get far enough away from it. Most agree that, for better or for worse, it has to be seen at least once in your lifetime.
Cable Car Museum
If you've ever wondered how cable cars work, this nifty museum explains (and demonstrates) it all. Yes, this is a museum, but the Cable Car Museum is no stuffed shirt. It's the living powerhouse, repair shop, and storage place of the cable car system and is in full operation. Built for the Ferries and Cliff House Railway in 1887, the building underwent an $18-million reconstruction to restore its original gaslight-era look, install an amazing spectators' gallery, and add a museum of San Francisco transit history. The exposed machinery, which pulls the cables under San Francisco's streets, looks like a Rube Goldberg invention. Stand in the mezzanine gallery and become mesmerized by the massive groaning and vibrating winches as they thread the cable that hauls the cars through a huge figure-eight and back into the system using slack-absorbing tension wheels. For a better view, move to the lower-level viewing room, where you can see the massive pulleys and gears operating underground. Also on display here is one of the first grip cars developed by Andrew S. Hallidie, operated for the first time on Clay Street on August 2, 1873. Other displays include an antique grip car and trailer that operated on Pacific Avenue until 1929, and dozens of exact-scale models of cars used on the various city lines. There's also a shop where you can buy a variety of cable car gifts. You can see the whole museum in about 45 minutes.
Pier 39
PIER 39 is a multilevel waterfront complex a few blocks east of Fisherman's Wharf. Constructed on an abandoned cargo pier, it is, ostensibly, a re-creation of a turn-of-the-20th-century street scene, but don't expect a slice of old-time maritime life. This is the busiest mall of the lot and allegedly welcomes 11 million visitors per year. It has more than 100 stores, 11 bay-view restaurants, a two-tiered Venetian carousel, a Hard Rock Cafe, and arcade and aquarium entertainment for the kids. And everything's slated toward helping you part with your travel dollars. It's the place that locals love to hate. That said, it does have a few perks: absolutely beautiful natural surroundings of bay views, fresh sea air, and hundreds of sunbathing sea lions lounging along its neighboring dock.

Strange

Good breakfasts within 1 block.

The place was satisfactory, except the water heater failed on the next to last day, and we had no hot water for the last two days.

Great location. The staff tries very hard to please you.

Go walking and see for yourself, you will enjoy yourself.

This Travel Lodge was in a very good location. The staff was very nice and pleasent to deal with. The room was very big (226) and quite. The free breakfast however was a disapointment, stale rools. But, there are plenty of cafes close by.

Biggest Bang for the bucks

Paul, Charlotte, NC, 2006-07-14

I would get a 3 or 7 day pass that you can buy at the Hyde trolley at the Warf or at the Union Station. This gives you unlimited bus, trolley or transit rides. This way you can visit just about all the sites for just one fee.

very friendly check in person, room is big, comfortable beds and wireless internet. Parking is limited but can park in another parking lot if full. Great location to take bus to the Pier 39, Chinatown and the Union station. Good cafe for breakfast nearby. Very safe neighborhood at night. I am coming back to stay again this September. Highly recommended for families and business, especially when you are planning to use Public transportation to see the City. Only drawback is the lack of restaurantsm but who cares when you can bus yourself to great places to eat anytime.

Location, location, location!!!

Anonymous, Newark, NJ, 2006-06-30

Ask the hotel staff some of the things that shouldn't be missed, and then ask them directions how to get there. They are very helpful.

This hotel stay was great for my husband and myself. The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was very clean and unique. We really liked the high ceiling, it made the room seem a lot larger than most standard hotel rooms. The location was key for us. Only getting to stay in San Fran for one night, the hotel was centrally located to all of the tourist attractions that we wanted to see, and decently priced for that location. We would recommend this hotel and definately stay there again.

Great Room

Anonymous, Los Angeles, CA, 2006-05-30

Short walk to us,(6 blocks), but cabs are everywhere!!!

This is a great little place off of the warf. You have to walk to get there(about 6 blocks)but it's worth it as you are not fighting all the crowds to get back to your room. Very comfortable room, loved the bathroom. Small, but cute and clean. Atfer walking around all day, it's nice that sooo many dining places deliver to the room. Watch out for the extra charge for parking though, it surprised us. Overall, we would go back.

Excellent Location

Anonymous, 2006-05-10

For a good affordable breakfast skip IHOP and Denny's and try Mel's Diner about a mile down the road.

Great location on the heart of Lombard Street. Less than a mile from "The crookedest street in the world". Close to Fisherman's Wharf and the Golden Gate Bridge. Amenities and hotel comfort are sub-par. If you are looking for a comfortable and plush room, this isn't your best option.

Fishermans's Wharf

The Travelodge staff was friendly and efficient. But the the room itself was dark and uninviting. The television wa small (21"?)and no ESPN! On the positive side, the motel was within walking distance to Fisherman's Wharf as well as neighborhood diners that I like a lot.

Great Location/Family Friendly/Price Value

Beth, New York, NY, 2006-02-05

You can rent bikes/walk on pier/shopping/restaurants

The manager and hotel front office was absolutely the warmest and most helpful people. I thought the location was great for walking distance to the wharf/little italy/ and alot of great restaurants. The room was just ok but clean. You can park your car for an affordable $11.00 a day.
