Most recent user reviewsScore 5 out of 5 Rock and Roll Fantasy Anonymous, 2006-11-05 Just a couple of blocks away from Van Ness and not far from Market, the location works well. There are many fine places to dine and socialize within walking distance. The Phoenix is unlike many other hotels. It is filled with youthful enthusiam. The staff is dedicated, the facilities are terrific, the courtyard a lot of fun, comfortable and inspired. The security factor is very good, as the neighborhood has the potential to be a bit rough. It is centrally located in the heart of the City, easy freeway access. There is an onsite restaurant featuring fine cuisine, an onsite Lounge for great entertainment and onsite free parking. With regard to the parking, look out. It is a tight parking lot, and guests hit the car three different places, most unfortunate. The rooms are fun. Bright, bold colors, bold and unconventional artwork, and decent lighting. All the amenities present - iron, ironing board, extra blanket and pillow in the closet, hair dryer, The bathroom was recently remodeled, reflecting the contemporary feeling and bath products and plenty of towels are provided, as well guides for dining and entertainment (although you don't really need to go anywhere)a TV, clock radio and your own personal bamboo xylophone. This is a hotel for the youthful and young at heart rockers. Don't expect it to be quiet at 11 pm. It is a fun place to be, and the Lounge is very much a part of the local nightlife. The continental breakfast served each morning is a nice spread, and the coffees and teas top quality. Enjoy! Score 5 out of 5 resort like feel,in downtown , Anonymous, Milwaukee, WI, 2006-09-25 Market Street is just a few blocks away with stores and restaraunts,Also very close to the Opera and other arts. The Phoenix Hotel turn up to be a refreshing surprise. The tropical feel of the courtyard-pool area sets the mood as you enter, the room and beds were comfortable, the bathrooms lack counter space for personal items. The room actually had artwork on the walls and sculpters troughout the courtyard and pool area. The food and bar area are open to the pool and tropical garden area making it feel much like a resort, including the feastve nitelife at the bar. At the same time though this can be a drawback to someone who needs to sleep early as the party can be heard from the room. Parking was easy and included, the location made comming and going easy ,but would not explore the neighborhood at nite alone as it is questionable. Score 4 out of 5 great for partying, so-so for resting Anonymous, El Paso, TX, 2006-07-24 Hotel is close to Union Square (about 5 blocks) with all its shops and restaurants, the problem is having to walk the first couple of blocks because it is in a bad area. Otherwise it is well situated, close to Van Ness St. and not far Nob Hill. The Phoenix hotel is on the one hand clean, cheap, and with helpful staff, but on the other it is located in a bad neighborhood and has limited options for meals, especially breakfast. You can't just walk around that neighborhood in search of a restaurant unless you are extremely adventouresome and can run fast. It does have interesting decor, though, and once you are in the hotel premises you do feel safe. This hotel is also known for its rock-n-roll atmosphere, which means that they hold a lot of parties that can be loud and can go past 10 p.m. There's also a lot of smoking on the patio during the parties, sometimes right outside of non-smoking rooms. For guests who like parties and don't mind noisy neighbors, this is the place to go. For people who just want to crash after a long day of sight-seeing, it can be a little loud. Score 1 out of 5 Flies everywhere Steven, Medford, OR, 2006-07-06 I was dissatisfied with my room because it did not have a back window for air circulation. No heater. No air conditioning. They kept a garbage can outside my room door, and I had to walk through flys circling in front of my door. When I opened the door, they and fruit gnats flew in. I was also put right next to the maintainance room, so there were frequent conversations just outside my door. The chairs were very scratchy and uncomfortable. Also, at 10 o'clock in the am, I was rudely awakened to the sound of a very loud gasoline-powered leaf blower. I thought that was very rude - and could have been done later in the afternoon. This happened on the morning of the 5th - the day after celebrating the 4th of July til late. The hotel is very close to strip clubs and other xxx places. I did complain about everything but was told that I could not have another room because the hotel was booked. Score 1 out of 5 Poor location and comfort Anonymous, San Francisco, CA, 2005-10-16 I did not notice anything of signifiance around the hotel. The Phonix hotel was over priced and in a bad area. The bed springs dug into my back, the pillows were unacceptable. The bathroom had mold growing on the floor by the tub and rust stains in the shower. I would not stay at this hotel, and I would not recommend it to others. Score 5 out of 5 Cool Hotel Anonymous, Philadelphia, PA, 2005-08-10 The Phoenix hotel is very close to center city San Francisco. The Phoenix hotel is one of the coolest hotels I've ever stayed in. It looks groovy, the rooms are clean and look nice, the people running the hotel are friendly and helpful, it's good value for money, it centrally located. What else do you want? Well, the Phoenix hotel has to offer more: everything has a nice design touch to it and many famous artists stayed there (ok, this doesn't really add anything real). Is ther anything bad to it? Yes, the neighbourhood is pretty dodgy. It's not really the part of town where you want the people hanging out on the street approach you. Nevertheless, I'd definitely stay there again. Score 5 out of 5 San Francisco's party hotel Anonymous, 2005-07-31 Make sure to read the hotel website's suggested things to do. The crepe place on Valencia street is to die for, and no one should miss Amoeba music! This hotel is definately the coolest place I've ever stayed, anywhere. If you don't mind San Fran's climate, there is a fabulous outdoor pool, perhaps the cheapest hotel with a pool available. The decor involves earthy imports and buddha statues, and the rooms are comfortable in size and design. Though there was a family or two around, this hotel is highly recommended in particular for young people or single folk looking for a fun crowd, as the hip lounge/restaurant next door has parties with music audible from every room every night. Be aware that the neighborhood around the hotel is slightly sketchy, so if you are not familiar with San Fran, ask the friendly staff for the best directions to your destination. Score 5 out of 5 Very Friendly Staff Denise, Indianapolis, IN, 2005-07-25 I would definitely recommend The Phoenix Hotel to anyone visiting SF. The poolside continental breakfast was a pleasant, relaxing way to start the day. The restaurant had excellent food and great staff. The hotel staff were also very friendly and accomodating. I'll be back!! Score 5 out of 5 Friendly, knowledge of the area Roberta, Barranquilla, 2005-06-05 Felt very comfortable as a single woman staying there. ALL of the staff smiled and was friendly and very knowledgable of the area. Very accommodating and offered helpful solutions to all my questions. Very unique place. Comfortable and eclectic. Bambudda on the property offered excellent presentations of food and wine ... a simple elegance in surroundings, great staff and music. Close to the Civic Center and heart of town. Bus system close and easily understood to move about San Fran. Welcomed my visitors by name and remembered facts I had mentioned about them. An awesome experience and very relaxing. Score 4 out of 5 Not for light sleepers, but a cool place to stay! Shannon, San Diego, CA, 2005-05-01 The Phoenix is a hip place to stay. It is basically a glorified motel setting but the rooms are decorated in a sort of faux tropical style. There is a nice contintinental breakfast in the morning with good coffee, bagels, and pastries. The hotel is located in a rather seedy area - I know San Francisco, so this was no big deal for me, but if you are not used to this it might not be the best place to stay. But the real downer to the hotel is, there is a club on the property that blares techno music until 2 A.M. and then there are people wandering the grounds all night making noise. If you are into the party, or a solid sleeper, this won't be a problem. If you are a light sleeper who wants to sleep, forget it. |
