During your San Francisco vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
The Exploratorium
Scientific American magazine rated the Exploratorium "the best science museum in the world" -- pretty heady stuff for this exciting hands-on science fair. It contains more than 650 permanent exhibits that explore everything from giant-bubble blowing to Einstein's theory of relativity. It's like a mad scientist's penny arcade, an educational fun house, and an experimental laboratory, all rolled into one. Touch a tornado, shape a glowing electrical current, finger-paint using a computer, or take a sensory journey in total darkness in the Tactile Dome ($15 extra) -- you could spend all day here and still not see everything. Every exhibit at the Exploratorium is designed to be interactive, educational, safe and, most important, fun. And don't think it's just for kids; parents inevitably end up being the most reluctant to leave. On the way out, be sure to stop in the wonderful gift store, which is chock-full of affordable brain candy. The museum is in the Marina District at the beautiful Palace of Fine Arts, the only building left standing from the Panama-Pacific Exposition of 1915. The adjoining park and lagoon -- the perfect place for an afternoon picnic -- is home to ducks, swans, seagulls, and grouchy geese, so bring bread.
San Francisco Zoo (& Children's Zoo)
Located between the Pacific Ocean and Lake Merced, in the southwest corner of the city, the San Francisco Zoo is a fun place to take the kids -- especially if you make it to the hands-on Children's Zoo. The zoo, which was founded at its present site adjacent to the ocean in 1929, is 125 acres, with 100 acres currently developed. Over 950,000 visitors come here annually to see the almost 950 mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. Exhibit highlights include the new Lipman Family Lemur Forest, a forest setting for five endangered species of lemurs from Madagascar that features interactive components for the visitor; Gorilla World, a tranquil setting for a family group of western lowland gorillas; Koala Crossing, which connects to the Australian WalkAbout exhibit with its kangaroos, wallaroos, and emu; Penguin Island, home to a large breeding colony of Magellanic Penguins; the Feline Conservation Center, a wooded sanctuary and breeding facility for endangered snow leopards and other small cats; and the Primate Discovery Center, home to rare and endangered monkeys. In the South American Tropical Forest building, a large green anaconda can be found as well as other South American reptile and bird species. Puente al Sur (Bridge to the South) has a pair of giant anteaters, a rare Baird's tapir, and capybaras. The Lion House is home to rare Sumatran and Siberian tigers and African lions. You can see the big cats fed every day at 2pm (except Mon). African Savanna, the latest exhibit, which opened in mid-2004, is a 3-acre mixed-species habitat with giraffes, zebras, antelope, and birds. The 6-acre Children's Zoo offers kids and their families opportunities for close-up encounters with domestic rare breeds of goats, sheep, ponies, and horses in the Family Farm. Touch and feel small mammals, reptiles, and amphibians along the Nature Trail (open Memorial Day to Labor Day), and gaze at eagles and hawks stationed on Hawk Hill. Visitors can see the inner-workings of the Koret Animal Resource Center, a thriving facility that houses the animals used in the educational outreach programs, and visit the incredible Insect Zoo. One of the Children's Zoo's most popular exhibits is the Meerkat and Prairie Dog exhibit, where kids can crawl through tunnels and play in sand, just like these two amazing burrowing species.Don't miss the Little Puffer miniature steam train, which takes passengers around a 1/3-mile track, and the historic Dentzel Carousel (both $2 per ride).
Aquarium of the Bay
The latest major addition to Fisherman's Wharf is Aquarium of the Bay, a $38-million, 1-million-gallon marine attraction filled with sharks, stingrays, and more. A moving footpath transports visitors through clear acrylic tunnels. The aquarium ultimately is not a destination in itself, but it's a good place to take the kids if you're in the neighborhood.

Nob Hill Inn
San Francisco is a city of contrasts. Resting on 40 hills, the city varies in altitude from sea level to 929 feet. It is located on a narrow peninsula, bordered on one side by the Pacific Ocean and the other by San Francisco Bay, one of the largest landlocked harbors in the world. In the heart of it all is Nob Hill, center of luxurious living in the last half of the 19th century, home of the railroad tycoons and sucessful gold miners. Ladies, I highly recommend shopping in area.

This hotel was very comfortable and affordable. If you are visiting the bay area I would recommend The Mosser hotel to either family or friend.

Mosser for your Money

Anonymous, San Jose, CA

Many dining options nearby, as well as shopping, nightlife & entertainment. Very good location.

Although the room was smaller than I thought it would be, it was very cute & cozy. I was disappointed that the elevator was not working at the time, as it was going through repairs. I would think that they would have the elevator up & running during the holidays & NYE, as that would be a very busy time. So we didn't like that we had to trek our own luggage up & down the narrow stairway (sometimes having to take turns with people coming from the opposite way). Besides that, the hotel was very clean & the staff was friendly. I would be happy to return once the elevator was working again.

Great for conventions

mary ann, Charlottesville, VA

Go around the corner and walk a block or two and you are in Nordstroms. Macy's is around a the corner and 3-4 blocks away is Union Square. A great thing to do in the evening is window shop the art galleries! It's like being in an art gallery with price tags.

Can't beat the price and the location when working a show at the Moscone Center! I love this place. I agree the rooms are small but there is a European cleanliness and compactness that really is nice. The beds are very comfortable and despite being on the street the rooms are quiet. It's central location work really well for me. After staying here 3 times I can say that they have one of the most agreeable staff I've encountered. There is an intimacy that makes you believe they know and care who you are. I like this hotel alot.

great place to go everywhere

Anonymous, San Francisco, CA

The Mosser hotel have small rooms but clean and comfortable (bed). I took a shared bathroom and it was okay! You are just on Market Street, so you can take any BART/MUNI/Bus and go where ever you want! we went to Ocean beach, to Pier 39, Chinatown directly! Therefore, you are just 2min to walk to Powell Street and 5 min to Union Square... That is a really great place to shop!

Great location. Tidy room.

I got just what I expected. I chose Mosser for a second year in a row. Rooms here are small, but always neat and comfortable. It is not exactly cheap unless you opt for one of the rooms without bathrooms. No desks in the room - nothing fancy. One 15 or 17 inch TV sits on a platform 8 feet in the air. No internet included - you have to pay $10/day for access PER EACH COMPUTER. So this isn't a luxurious hotel, this is not a business hotel. This is where you can stay for cheap conveniently, have all the basics covered very reliably, (even an ironing board + iron) and stay comfortable at a central location near union square, metreon, Museum of Modern Art, Moscone center, etc.

Very Cozy!

Michael, Washington, DC, 2007-02-13

Many sites are a short ride away. Would recommend getting a 3 day transportation pass. Good for unlimited rides on cable cars, buses, street cars, and train.

This was our first time to San Francisco and obviously our first time at the Mosser. The rooms were small but very comfortable and were beautifully decorated. We upgraded to our own private bath instead of sharing with the hall, but never saw anyone waiting for them when passing by. The only two drawbacks were that our room didn't have a fridge. There are no dressers except for a little drawer under the bed. Not a problem for myself since I never use the dressers in hotel rooms! The staff was very friendly and helped with any questions that we had. Rooms were clean and the location was fantastic. Would highly recommend! Just be aware that the rooms are small, but cozy and would be ideal for a first time or young traveler(s).

Excellent accomodations for a great price.

The location for this hotel is really sweet and super safe--lots of great shopping and a few delicious coffee/breakfast joints around other than Starbucks. The rooms are insanely small (there's about a foot or two of room on either side of the bed) but the amenities are modern and everything was very clean. It was also fairly quiet at night, we had both windows open (there was some noise from people leaving bars, but what else can you expect on the weekend?). I took a peak at the shared toilets and baths (they offer this singles and doubles w/ shared bath for an even lower price) and they were also very clean and modern--so if you're considering this option, go for it. The staff was friendly and it took about five minutes to check-in and zero minutes to check out. The elevator was under renovation at the time of our stay (we had the luck of getting a room on the SEVENTH floor), so be aware to check on this when you make a reservation. Note that if you give your car for valet, plan to ask for it twenty minutes before you need it. Overall, great experience. If you're on a budget, stay here.

Great Location Without Going Bankrupt

Tal, Chicago, IL, 2007-02-02

SF MOMA and beautiful gardens next to it, Union Square, Cable Cart, excellent shopping

This is the second time I've gone back to this hotel, and its location is just fantastic. The hotel is basic, but totally sufficient for someone who is just looking for a nice room to stay in. Staff is extra friendly, and you just can't beat this location. Within 2 minutes walk you have the Powell Bart station, Cable cart, great shopping, SF MOMA, park and movies. All this before you even begin to explore what's available 5 min. walking from there... A word of advice though: the hotel elevator is undergoing renovations now (it's not working!) so make sure you get a room on one of the lower floors, unless you feel like exercising every time you come back from shopping.

The Mosser Hotel

Mickey, Los Angeles, CA, 2006-11-28

Walk next door or across the street. The Mosser is located literally next door to whatever kind of shopping you could hope for.

I'd have to start by saying this was the smallest room I've ever stayed in for such an extended period (6 nights). That said, the room was comfortable, if cramped, and very conveniently laid out. The staff were polite and helpful. The biggest drawback for me was parking. The Mosser has no other form of parking except valet parking. Aside from the fact that it adds up after a while, it's only available at certain times. A major saving grace of course is that the hotel is a short cab ride from practically everything.
