Petite Auberge

863 Bush St. , San Francisco, CA 94108
Pure romance. That's what people say about Petite Auberge, a charming European-style boutique hotel that combines luxury and charm in a stylish historic building. Petite Auberge, a 'small inn,' welcomes guests to a world of provincial enchantment. French doors with beveled glass, a collection of French art, a cozy parlor with a crackling fire and an afternoon wine and hors d'oeuvres await your arrival. A dedicated staff provides assistance in experiencing the city's best. A delicious breakfast is served each day in the dining room where a mural of a French market scene graces the walls. Don't miss the cookie jar in the lobby that is filled each day with a freshly baked treat! The whimsical French feel of the inn continues in the 26 guest rooms with their inviting beds and carved armoires. All rooms have a private bath, voicemail and data port, and many feature fireplaces. Honeymooners might want to select the Petite Suite with its private deck, hand-painted king bed, spa tub, champagne and chocolates.

During your San Francisco vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Cable Car Museum
If you've ever wondered how cable cars work, this nifty museum explains (and demonstrates) it all. Yes, this is a museum, but the Cable Car Museum is no stuffed shirt. It's the living powerhouse, repair shop, and storage place of the cable car system and is in full operation. Built for the Ferries and Cliff House Railway in 1887, the building underwent an $18-million reconstruction to restore its original gaslight-era look, install an amazing spectators' gallery, and add a museum of San Francisco transit history. The exposed machinery, which pulls the cables under San Francisco's streets, looks like a Rube Goldberg invention. Stand in the mezzanine gallery and become mesmerized by the massive groaning and vibrating winches as they thread the cable that hauls the cars through a huge figure-eight and back into the system using slack-absorbing tension wheels. For a better view, move to the lower-level viewing room, where you can see the massive pulleys and gears operating underground. Also on display here is one of the first grip cars developed by Andrew S. Hallidie, operated for the first time on Clay Street on August 2, 1873. Other displays include an antique grip car and trailer that operated on Pacific Avenue until 1929, and dozens of exact-scale models of cars used on the various city lines. There's also a shop where you can buy a variety of cable car gifts. You can see the whole museum in about 45 minutes.
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (MOMA)
Swiss architect Mario Botta, in association with Hellmuth, Obata, and Kassabaum, designed this $65-million museum, which has made SoMa one of the more popular areas to visit, for tourists and residents alike. The museum's permanent collection consists of more than 23,000 works, including close to 5,000 paintings and sculptures by artists such as Henri Matisse, Jackson Pollock, and Willem de Kooning. Other artists represented are Diego Rivera, Georgia O'Keeffe, Paul Klee, the Fauvists, and exceptional holdings of Richard Diebenkorn. MOMA was one of the first museums to recognize photography as a major art form; its extensive collection includes more than 12,000 photographs by such notables as Ansel Adams, Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Weston, and Henri Cartier-Bresson. Unfortunately, few works are on display at one time, and for the money the experience can be disappointing -- especially compared to the finer museums of New York. Docent-led tours take place daily. Times are posted at the admission desk. Phone for current details of upcoming special events and exhibitions or check MOMA's website. The Caffé Museo, to the right of the museum entrance, offers very good-quality fresh soups, sandwiches, and salads. No matter what, don't miss the MuseumStore, which carries a wonderful array of architectural gifts, books, and trinkets. It's one of the best shops in town.
California Palace of the Legion of Honor
Designed as a memorial to California's World War I casualties, this neoclassical structure is an exact replica of the Legion of Honor Palace in Paris, right down to the inscription HONNEUR ET PATRIE above the portal. The Legion of Honor reopened in late 1995, after a 2-year, $35-million renovation and seismic upgrading. The exterior's grassy expanses, cliff-side paths, and incredible view of the Golden Gate and downtown make this an absolute must-visit attraction before you even get in the door. The inside is equally impressive. The museum's permanent collection covers 4,000 years of art and includes paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts from Europe, as well as international tapestries, prints, and drawings. The chronological display of 4,000 years of ancient and European art includes one of the world's finest collections of Rodin's sculptures. The sunlight Legion Café offers indoor and outdoor seating at moderate prices. Plan to spend 2 or 3 hours here.

Fresh French Country Inn

Diane, Honolulu, HI, 2006-10-15

Any activity you want is near - Union Square 4 blocks, Chinatown 6 blocks, Nob Hill right there, and North Beach a really nice walk for those that are fit!! Enjoy.

This was our third stay at the Petite Auberge. Nothing has changed, however everything seemed better. Best home cooked breakfast in San Francisco and it is included in your room fee. Staff goes way beyond the call of duty for everyone and it truly shows. Wine and pupus in the early evening are a warm delight - they always throw in some sort of a cake too!!! Deluxe King is the best room - very large with an extra seating area and the fireplace just completes the room. Great bath accessories also. They accommodated us three extra nights due to the Earth Quake in Hawaii - what a way to go and we will, of course, be back as soon as we can. Thanks Petite Auberge for a wonderful and charming stay.

meet interesting people

Anonymous, West Palm Beach, FL, 2006-09-15

if you are a senior, get the monthly senior pass on muni. it is good for everything except bart and only costs $10.00. it was the first thing the PA staff suggested. really good deal.

staying at a B&B in a city like SF is wonderful because the staff is so knowledgable and interested in your experience. PA guests have generally stayed there before, and they are always a pleasure to talk to at breakfast and at the pre dinner wine and cheese. the food is excellent. not for those who want a big hotel. just right for us.

good location

short walk to great shopping and restaurants

Our stay at the Petite Auberge started out a little rocky. The first room was very small and the shower was so small one could barely move in it. We requested a larger room and had to pay a $20 upgrade fee. That room was much nicer, big room with a normal shower. The location is good and there is wine for guests at dinner time and breakfast in the morning.
