During your Anaheim vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (MOMA)
Swiss architect Mario Botta, in association with Hellmuth, Obata, and Kassabaum, designed this $65-million museum, which has made SoMa one of the more popular areas to visit, for tourists and residents alike. The museum's permanent collection consists of more than 23,000 works, including close to 5,000 paintings and sculptures by artists such as Henri Matisse, Jackson Pollock, and Willem de Kooning. Other artists represented are Diego Rivera, Georgia O'Keeffe, Paul Klee, the Fauvists, and exceptional holdings of Richard Diebenkorn. MOMA was one of the first museums to recognize photography as a major art form; its extensive collection includes more than 12,000 photographs by such notables as Ansel Adams, Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Weston, and Henri Cartier-Bresson. Unfortunately, few works are on display at one time, and for the money the experience can be disappointing -- especially compared to the finer museums of New York. Docent-led tours take place daily. Times are posted at the admission desk. Phone for current details of upcoming special events and exhibitions or check MOMA's website. The Caffé Museo, to the right of the museum entrance, offers very good-quality fresh soups, sandwiches, and salads. No matter what, don't miss the MuseumStore, which carries a wonderful array of architectural gifts, books, and trinkets. It's one of the best shops in town.
Ghiradelli Square
This National Historic Landmark property dates from 1864, when it served as a factory making Civil War uniforms, but it's best known as the former chocolate and spice factory of Domingo Ghirardelli (pronounced "Gear-a-deli"), who purchased it in 1984. The factory has since been converted into a three-level mall containing 50-plus stores and 11 dining establishments. Scheduled street performers entertain regularly in the West Plaza and fountain area. Incidentally, the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company still makes chocolate, but its factory is in a lower-rent district in the East Bay. Still, if you have a sweet tooth, you won't be disappointed at the mall's fantastic old-fashioned soda fountain.
California Palace of the Legion of Honor
Designed as a memorial to California's World War I casualties, this neoclassical structure is an exact replica of the Legion of Honor Palace in Paris, right down to the inscription HONNEUR ET PATRIE above the portal. The Legion of Honor reopened in late 1995, after a 2-year, $35-million renovation and seismic upgrading. The exterior's grassy expanses, cliff-side paths, and incredible view of the Golden Gate and downtown make this an absolute must-visit attraction before you even get in the door. The inside is equally impressive. The museum's permanent collection covers 4,000 years of art and includes paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts from Europe, as well as international tapestries, prints, and drawings. The chronological display of 4,000 years of ancient and European art includes one of the world's finest collections of Rodin's sculptures. The sunlight Legion Café offers indoor and outdoor seating at moderate prices. Plan to spend 2 or 3 hours here.

Unusual

Cheesecake Factory

I have stayed at a few hotels and I was pretty surprised to find out that Hotel Monaco wanted to charge me for a toothbrush. It was just a little unusual. The hotel is beautiful and I would suggest people to get the Queen Canopy bed.

Great Romantic Weekend

Micah, San Francisco, CA, 2006-06-25

We walked down toward Union Square which is the high-end shoppping mecca for SF. Great buys and even a few deals are not far away.

My wife and I celebrated our anniversary recently at the Hotel Monaco. The upside: The hotel decor, the canopy bed, the wine reception and staff friendliness made for a great trip. The downside: the rooms are small (although no surprise for downtown SF), there was some mildew in the shower, and it was pretty crowded. I also did not notice the additional charge for larger vehicles for their valet charge. Despite these relatively small things, we had a great stay and would go back again. The best touch was a bottle of champagne delivered to our room, compliments of the hotel to help us celebrate our anniversary. Nice touch!

Just what I expected

Anonymous, Fresno, CA, 2006-05-07

The hotel is in the heart of Union Square.

The room was really cool. The canopy bed is a great feature. Didnt have that corporate/chain cookie cutter feel.

the place to stay

Anonymous, San Francisco, CA, 2006-03-19

nord

this was our second stay at hotel monaco. we had a petite queen, which at first seemed small, but acutally suited us well. place to store 4 suitcases, safe, etc. we loved the canapy queen alcove. very comfortable. my husband is allergic to down, and pillows and comforters changed by the time we were in our room. used the spa, try the aromatherapy wrap. the large restaurant, great food and service. wine overpriced. the bar in the cafe is great as are the bartenders. the bell help great for haircut recommendations. we did not use valet parking, but they directed us to parking around the corner for $20 dollars a day. i cant wait to go back.

Was charged twice for room

helena, Santa Clara, 2005-07-24

Whilst the hotel itself is lovely and the staff are pleasant when we checked out they charged us AGAIN for the room. I rung the hotel to notify them that they had charged me agaon when I'd already pre-paid and they said they would refund. MY concerns are this: I'll be ringing the hotels for booking direct from now on... AND the hotel made a mistake and if I'd never have noticed they would have got alot of money for one night!
