During your Anaheim vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Grace Cathedral
Although this Nob Hill cathedral, designed by architect Lewis P. Hobart, appears to be made of stone, it is in fact constructed of reinforced concrete, beaten to achieve a stonelike effect. Construction began on the site of the Crocker mansion in 1928 but was not completed until 1964. Among the more interesting features of the building are its stained-glass windows, particularly those by the French Loire studios and Charles Counick, depicting such modern figures as Thurgood Marshall, Robert Frost, and Albert Einstein; the replicas of Ghiberti's bronze Doors of Paradise at the east end; the series of religious murals completed in the 1940s by Polish artist John de Rosen; and the 44-bell carillon. Along with its magical ambience, Grace lifts spirits with services, musical performances, and its weekly Forum (Sun 9:30-10:30am except summer and major holidays), where guests lead discussions about spirituality in modern times.
California Academy of Sciences
Originally clustered around the Music Concourse in Golden Gate Park (in multiple buildings) and intending to return there around 2008 after a complete rebuild, this grouping of outstanding museums is now across from Moscone West, near the Yerba Buena Gardens and Center for the Arts. In its new location the Steinhart Aquarium houses some 5,400 animals, including seahorses, turtles, snakes, and poison dart frogs as well as a two-story 20,000-gallon living coral reef featuring Harlequin Tush fish, Yellow Tangs, sea stars, and a giant clam. Kids love the "touch tide pool" where they can get their mitts on live sea life.An edited version of the Natural History Museum has also been transplanted and hosts changing exhibits such as "Ants: Hidden Worlds Revealed," which shows the insects in action within six different live ant colonies. Some of the museum's permanent displays have moved, too, including Snake Alley, where terrestrial snakes reside; Astrobiology, an exhibit exploring life in extreme environments; and ScienceNOW, which presents a frequently changing display of Academy research, breaking science news, and expeditions around the globe. Toddlers will love the Nature Nest, an education center with hands-on learning activities.Families should look into the Academy's calendar of events, which includes fun kid-friendly festivities such as face-painting, storytelling, animal origami, and exhibit-related stories and demonstrations.
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (MOMA)
Swiss architect Mario Botta, in association with Hellmuth, Obata, and Kassabaum, designed this $65-million museum, which has made SoMa one of the more popular areas to visit, for tourists and residents alike. The museum's permanent collection consists of more than 23,000 works, including close to 5,000 paintings and sculptures by artists such as Henri Matisse, Jackson Pollock, and Willem de Kooning. Other artists represented are Diego Rivera, Georgia O'Keeffe, Paul Klee, the Fauvists, and exceptional holdings of Richard Diebenkorn. MOMA was one of the first museums to recognize photography as a major art form; its extensive collection includes more than 12,000 photographs by such notables as Ansel Adams, Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Weston, and Henri Cartier-Bresson. Unfortunately, few works are on display at one time, and for the money the experience can be disappointing -- especially compared to the finer museums of New York. Docent-led tours take place daily. Times are posted at the admission desk. Phone for current details of upcoming special events and exhibitions or check MOMA's website. The Caffé Museo, to the right of the museum entrance, offers very good-quality fresh soups, sandwiches, and salads. No matter what, don't miss the MuseumStore, which carries a wonderful array of architectural gifts, books, and trinkets. It's one of the best shops in town.

Zen, and more zen

Jennifer, Sacramento, CA

The hotel is close to Market street and they have just about anything there. It was also located near the clubs we were going to.

Regardless of the neighborhood this hotel was in this place was like being in a spa or resort. I was very shocked to learn they had a meditation room as well, I was also sad to not be able to have checked it out in the time we had there. I will most likely if we are there again. The only other thing was they ran out of hot water before check out, and I had to take a partial cold shower that morning. I suppose as it is a very old building, this sort of thing happens. They did apologize since there was nothing that could have been done at that time. Otherwise, the hotel was clean and very presentable. If I stayed in the city again, I would look into them again.

Will probably never stay there again

Anonymous, 2007-02-28

When we arrived, I was impressed and thought the hotel was very nice and clean. However, the front desk person was not very receptive or friendly. As soon as they saw our pets, we were told that there would be a $25 pet cleaning fee. They rip you off by charging you $30 a day to park your car. And guess what? YOU have to park your car, walk over their little shack in the corner of the parking lot and give them your keys. And when you're leaving the hotel, they expect you to come to their little shack and get your car keys from them and retrieve your own vehicle. What are we paying $30 for??? And it is our understanding that we were not the only ones complaining. There were SEVERAL complaints during our stay. Certain employees of the hotel do not know the meaning of privacy. I'M PAYING for the room, so why would they want to know whether or not there's someone in the room? During one shift, the front desk workers apparently tried calling our room to check if anyone was in it. They failed to hang up the phone after they tried calling our room, so they were recorded on our answering machine in the room. They were recorded saying that they were going to re-program our room keys and then sent someone up to see if we were in the room. What a total lack of respect and professionalism!! Those employees should have been handed their pink slips! It's NOT the hotel employees' business to keep an eye on their customers!! The only decent person in that hotel was the guest relations manager who was appalled, embarassed and apologetic about the shabby way we were treated!! I will not stay there again, nor will I recommend ANY of my friends and family to stay there!

Good for the money

Chris, Chicago, IL, 2006-10-09

Don't walk through the tenderloin at night.

Location is right on the bleeding edge of the Tenderloin, but, that said, the hotel itself is nice and a short walk from tons of shopping.

Sketchy at Night

Kimberly, 2006-09-24

Union Square with great shopping is just down the road. Start of the cable car lines is very close. Chinatown is a relatively short walk.

The hotel lobby was very nice. The staff was very nice and helpful. I was disappointed with the business center. The computer and internet access didn't work when I went there and I was told that no one could fix it until the next morning. The problem is that I didn't need the computer to work the next morning. I needed it at that particular moment. During the daytime the area was great. When the sun goes down it became pretty sketchy. Although the stay was decent, I personally won't stay there on my next visit to San Francisco.

Convinient

Sergio, Laredo, TX, 2006-09-20

China town is nearby

The hotel was near the convention center but is an old one and the floor had a bad smell to cigarrete. It did not have air conditioning nor dinning facilities and pool.

Outstanding Hotel

Jan, Corning, NY, 2006-08-04

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Steps away from the cable car, BART (subway to us in NY) that could take you anywhere quickly Fantastic shopping at Nordstrom's For $5.00 I took the BART train from and back to the Emeryville Amtrak station - about a 20 min trip (or less)

The location at 25 Mason Street could not be better as far as being close to everything. True, when you walk up to the front of the hotel, you may be disappointed, but opening the door is like entering another dimension. The hotel interior has been beautifully restored with a nod toward the Zen of the natural world: earth, wind, air and water. A small balcony library allows access to email, and a business floor with free internet access, a printer and copier were available, though I didn't use this. A meditation room and workout room were also avaiable, but I did not have time to take advantage of these. The room was absolutely spotless. I felt like I was the first person to be there. The bathroom had a beautiful white pedestal sink, with a modernist tile on the walls. The decor echoed the best of modernist design, with attention to color and how that might make a person feel. For me, it was immensely relaxing. Although the room was small, the interior designer knew how to make it feel bigger. I was traveling alone, but noticed lots of people from other countries, many with children. I would have to assume it was a kid-friendly place. Children were quietly sitting in the library when I was there. I loved this hotel.

Convienient and comfortable

Anonymous, Sacramento, CA, 2006-06-25

Short walk to cable car and market street which is a great point to find all types of public transportation.

For a brief stay, The Metropolis is great. Although my room was small, it felt more like I was at a friends apartment. Unlike most hotels in this price range the layout and decore was more warming and welcoming.
