111 Mason St. , Anaheim, CA 94102
Inspired by San Francisco's rich cinematic history, the Hotel Bijou is adorned with movie palace styling, dramatic Hollywood portraits, and a mini-movie theater in the lobby. During your Anaheim vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Aquarium of the Bay
The latest major addition to Fisherman's Wharf is Aquarium of the Bay, a $38-million, 1-million-gallon marine attraction filled with sharks, stingrays, and more. A moving footpath transports visitors through clear acrylic tunnels. The aquarium ultimately is not a destination in itself, but it's a good place to take the kids if you're in the neighborhood.
San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park
Shaped like an Art Deco ship, the Maritime Museum is filled with sailing, whaling, and fishing lore. Remarkably good exhibits include intricate model craft and scrimshaw. The collection of shipwreck photographs and historic marine scenes includes an 1851 snapshot of hundreds of abandoned ships, deserted en masse by crews dashing off to participate in the gold rush. Beautifully carved, brightly painted wooden figureheads from old windjammers line the walls. Two blocks east, at the park's Hyde Street Pier, are several historic ships, now moored and open to the public. The Balclutha, one of the last surviving square-riggers and the handsomest vessel in San Francisco Bay, was built in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1886 and carried grain from California at a near-record speed of 300 miles a day. The ship is now completely restored. Kids can climb into the bunking quarters, visit the "slop chest" ("galley" to you, matey), and read the sea chanteys (clean ones only) that decorate the walls. The 1890 Eureka still carries a cargo of nostalgia for San Franciscans. It was the last of 50 paddle-wheel ferries that regularly plied the bay; it made its final trip in 1957. Restored to its original splendor at the height of the ferryboat era, the side-wheeler is loaded with deck cargo, including antique cars and trucks. The black-hulled, three-masted C. A. Thayer, built in 1895, was crafted for the lumber trade and carried logs felled in the Pacific Northwest to the carpentry shops of California. Unfortunately, it's undergoing renovation and isn't slated to return until 2006.Other historic ships docked here include the tiny two-masted Alma, one of the last scow schooners to bring hay to the horses of San Francisco; the Hercules, a huge 1907 oceangoing steam tug; and the Eppleton Hall, a side-wheel tugboat built in England in 1914 to operate on London's River Thames. At the pier's small-boat shop, visitors can follow the restoration progress of historic boats from the museum's collection. It's behind the maritime bookstore on your right as you approach the ships.
The Cannery
The Cannery was built in 1907 as a fruit-canning plant and was converted into a mall in the 1960s. It contains 30-plus shops, a ceramic studio and gallery, and several restaurants, including Jack's Cannery Bar (tel. 415/931-6400). Vendors' stalls and sidewalk cafes occupy the courtyard amid a grove of century-old olive trees and, weather permitting, street performers are usually out in force, entertaining tourists. Note: This is a tourist destination that many locals avoid.

Cheap and Clean but noisy

Anonymous, Los Angeles, CA, 2006-11-06

Within one block you are at the nicest shopping area in SF. There are also a lot of restaurants in the area.

This hotel has good rooms, the staff is nice, it's located near Union Square, but it doesn't have AC and to open the window makes the room very noisy and you end up having be a not-so-good night sleep. The hotel provided earplugs but that wasn't enough.

small and comfortable

Todd, 2006-10-15

Macy's and all the big retail stores are right there at union square a long but enjoyable walk from the hotel. There are some nice little cafe s close by to get some breakfast and fairly inexpensive.

If you're looking for a reasonable small hotel in the heart of San Francisco then this it it. The staff were very friendly and the rooms clean and comfortable. I highly recommend this hotel.

Family Friendly

Anonymous, Salt Lake City, UT, 2006-09-18

The area is right next to the San Francisco Mall and union square.

The Bijou Hotel has larger rooms than most hotels of this price range. The staff is friendly and knowledgable of the area. I like that since downtown San Francisco in the shopping district is known to be loud at night the hotel provided complimentry ear plugs.

Good location

Anonymous, Boston, MA, 2006-07-14

Hotel Bijou was clean and well positioned relative to the Moscone Center where I was attending a trade show. The lack of dining options in the hotel itself was a bit of a disppointment, but there were options very close by.

Good Hotel in a Bad Neighborhood

Cole, Baltimore, MD, 2006-07-13

Union Square is within walking distance from the Hotel Bijou, but don't try walking there at night because you might not survive the journey. A trolley line begins only two blocks from the hotel, and will take you across the city to Fisherman's Wharf and safer areas.

The Hotel Bijou is on Mason and Eddy Streets, only a block away from the BARC station. The hotel itself was just fine and the price was reasonable. Unfortunately, the local area was a bit disturbing, especially at night. Before, there was a visible police presence. This time, we never saw a police officer. It's too bad that a decent place like the Hotel Bijou was unlucky enough to be built in an area that has turned into ghetto. How unfortunate!

My review of Hotel Bijou

Anonymous, Atlanta, GA, 2006-07-12

The room was comfortable but the location was a little sketchy. It was also rather loud at night right outside the hotel. I never felt threatened, but we had to be careful as to which way we walked away from the hotel.

Clean and comfortable business stop

james, Denver, CO, 2006-02-26

The recently relocated Asian Art Museum in the beautifully redesigned former city library offers a unique opportunity to escape the bustle of the city for a quiet look at rare pacfic rim cultural treasures.

The Bijou was perfect for the cost concious business traveller who also appreciates a clean and well maintained environment managed by friendly and knowledgeable staff. There are few amenties but the location is within a block of BART and hubs for easy bus and cable car connections. Using the Bart system the visitor can quickly and inexpensively reach both the Embarcadero and Financial district as well as the East Bay and Oakland Airport. There is also a rich variety of restaurants serving a choice of meals from early morning to late at night. However, the hotels proximity to the the Tenderloin area makes it advisable for new visitors to check with the hotel staff before venturing into certain areas after dark. The hotel is also centrally located to the both the business and cultural center of San Francisco and is within walking distance of the Museum of Modern Art, City Hall, upscale shopping, and the convention centers.
